That would certainly encourage people to come out here in the future. People were saying Terry's financial woes would have made foreign recruiting hard, but surely a developing a reputation of not honouring contracts would make it a hell of a lot harder.

Smith is only a 2 month contract still isn't he? Problem solved.

My comment was slightly tongue-in-cheek incidentally...

2011 CSL season for Shaanxi Chanba:
played 590 minutes in 9 games
    8 starts, substitute 5 times,
stayed on the bench 3 times (no game time)
    1 goal

CSL is a 30 game season. Shaanxi finished 9th in the middle of the table Perhaps not quite so good?

Can I speculate - a lot of the players under Terry stayed in the century city apartments, I suggest for free and not under the salary cap. No Terry means we may be pushing the salary cap a bit. Might explain some tight purse strings.

Ricki is always going to come out and say something like that if he knows there aren't going to be any more players coming in. Tegal2011-11-10 23:38:30

So in 9 games he scored 1 goal? Oh great recommendation Steve-O, sign him up while there is time left for him to score 2 goals with the games left....

Also, I'm pretty sure Tez hasn't owned Century City for a while now... I may be wrong.

I wonder how many people here will crap their pants if they ARE sacking Ricki... and replacing him with Raymond Tribuletx, to pull a name out of a hat.

I really hope it's not a sacking of one Ricki Lloyd Herbert. Even though the results haven't been going our way, sacking the coach is not the answer.

Oh god! Two years of boring defensive football.

I want a refund of my season tickets or at least be able to transfer them to the Roar (bet they got fridge magnets too).

1. I suspect Herbert has been through more sh*t with Terry and getting paid over the last year or so than many of us can imagine. His loyalty to the club and his players through that incredibly trying time was exemplary and is to his great credit. I'm glad for him he has security of position and income for the next few years.

2. As a coach he has many strengths not the least of which are his man management abilities and his loyalty.

3. As a coach he has weaknesses especially around recruitment (identifying talent) and retention of players. In this area he needs some assistance.

4. Personally I want to see him develop in to a coach with the attributes of Ange P - spots and develops talents and coaches an attacking and entertaining style of football. I don't know, but hope, Ricki has those abilities in him but believe he has earned and deserves the opportunity to show what he can do in a secure and stable club environment.

5. I want the Nix to win the A-League.

6. On balance I'm pleased for Ricki and the club that he has signed on for a few more years - now I want to see him deliver a title.
He dribbles a lot and the opposition dont like it - you can see it all over their faces. (Ron Atkinson)

I know this isn't exactly the right place, but can someone remind me whether or not Ricki's had his All Whites contract renewed through the 2014 World Cup already?

Also, is this two year extension until winter 2013 or winter 2014?

Ricki has got his dues- he has shown fantastic commitment to the Club and NZ Football in the face of very trying times, largely created by St. Tel.

He has remained loyal, worked tirelessly and showed a huge amount of discretion when he must have been sorely tempted to let rip many, many times. He is a fantastic ambassador for the Phoenix, and I believe he deserves, and has absolutely earned the right, to be given the dignity to walk away from the 'Nix when he is good and ready, to a long and very happy retirement.

Anyone who disagrees with this deserves to get shoved up a Tiger Woods.

There are elements to Ricki that some people do not like. I wont begrudge them that because like everyone, we all have our opinions. I just wish the sack Ricki brigade would come up with more than 'sack Ricki' like a replacement or names that would do a better job, but they never do. Its always sack Ricki and nothing more.

I think that Ricki 'deserves' his extension. I think back to when he was called into the Knights at short notice and got results. He got a sh*t hand there. Then he gets the new team with short notice. Season 1 they didn't produce and to be fair whiile they finished lastm they played competitive for the most part. Since then however......

The big issue I have is personnel. If you look at the Knights, they were is a right sorry state and he got results. He strikes me as a motivator and man manager that excels at getting the best out of what he has. Part of me wonders if the main failing of the Phoenix is that there is nothing more to get out of them. If you look at the roster they have and the established players, can you say that hey have more to give? Durante would compare against the best in the A League but I think he has peaked, Manny came from nowhere and I doubt he would improve much more, Lia would have been in oblivion, SigmUnd was playing rugby. I kinda wonder if that he has got the best out of what he has and basically needs to put the squad in recycle and start again to find some fresh stuff.

Just a thought...

well, I think it would have been an off season to begin renewal (and I think Marco was a part of those plans, probably just quietly) but you know....

Good points. Sacking Rikki wouldn't solve anything much.

Like you say, he's been repeatedly dealt a sh*t hand, and somehow not just kept going but actually providing some impresssive results- who could have dreamed of the All Whites holding the World Champions to a draw??

Not having to worry about the next door knock ("Thanks Terry") is really liberating, and allows you to concentrate on what you were employed to do.

With the Welnix now backing him with a decent contract showing real commitment, he now has the chance to fly...

As I said before (Prediction stuff) and I still hold to,  we are about to hit the Good Times.
Big Time.

No I was close to going but the situation changed. I'm still at the ROF so you can't blame me!

Put it this way, if Ivan was offered a job here and ACFC offered him more to stay and coach there (which they would), then I would understand.
Surely the chance to coach a professional side would have to be a factor though, if he's keen on coaching as a career (although I guess if you coach ACFC you get a once a year shot at playing in the Club World Championship Cup Trophy or whatever its called, which might mean something to someone somewhere...)And are ACFC's pockets that deep? I don't know much about the financial status of NZFC franchises

Why would Ivan leave a highpaying kids coaching gig (with playing
thrown in for free) to go a professional setup... complete
madness...
If Danny Hay gets head hunted by the new owners for the feeder team job, would he turn it down? Har har.

Lots of opinions on Ricki.
There is nobody in NZ football that would have done a better job. A previous comment was spot on regarding how much some of our players can improve.
If he had the players that the Roar has, then perhaps we would be at the top instead of at the bottom.

I am happy for Rickie to be the coach this season and then see what he can do next season coming from a stable set up with good backing. He is owed that because he has had to put up with some difficult times and done it with integrity.

However beyond that I don't want an automatic rubber stamp for 2 extra years. Any thing beyond the end of next season has to be perfomance based.

Up to now we have only won approx 33% of our games with 45 losses and 36 wins, we can't win off shore. In four years we have had one 4th place finish and the other three we have finished in the bottom half of the comp. Any rational observer would agree that this is a fairly mediocre record. In many other clubs around the world he would have been sacked by now. Ernie Merrick won two Championships with the Victory and got sacked after one poor ACL campaign.

Like I said I am happy for Rickie to stay on until the end of next season. But there is absolutely no reason why this club should not be finishing in the top 4 next season. We should not settle for mediocrity. If Rickie can deliver  top 4  then he gets my 100% support for staying on.....if not then he gets fired and we find someone who can deliver.
