A new name in the mix.  Rob Sherman.

Interesting. I thought it was a lock for Vid. Anyone know Rob Sherman, or had dealings with him?

Even more interesting. Has played professionally at a high level, varied footballing background, the right level of coaching badge, and his name has come out of left field at the last minute. Sounds like a serious contender. (Is he living in NZ at the moment?)

Dunno. Maybe give him a ring and ask him. Maybe check his CV while at it. :)

You could live in Aussie and just pop over regularly. Didn't the Black Caps have an Australian coach at one stage who did that? Can't remember his name, or find it. Anyway, NZ Cricket probably paid him more in travel allowances that they paid the whole team back then. I recall that same coach never did get on with Shane Warne when he was coaching the Australian nation team. When asked his opinion of that particular coach, Warne said that professional cricketers didn't actually need coaches, except to transport them to the airport.

But, back on subject: yes, I'll concede, Rob Sherman is probably living in NZ. :)

Honestly it's kind of annoying because I genuinely think that Ernie Merrick could do quite well with this squad, it's quite a bit different to when he left

No real senior team coaching experience by the looks. Not even as an assistant at a senior club

We know Burns and Krishna thrive under him, Ridenton and Singh would get plenty of ball, I think Galloway would be excellent in a Merrick team too.

Heard the back end of Dome on RS with Darcy and Goran not long ago. I get the impression that they'll be hiring one of the Australians with A League coaching experience. Dome admitted they got DK wrong and the lesson they learned was the importance of having someone that knew Australian players, A League etc. He wasn't totally convincing to me, still too much spin - reminded me of a car salesman. Personally I don't know if they've learned the real lesson at all - they can't pick a coach full stop, let alone minding where they are from....

But they didn't just hire DK did they? Rado was obviously a big part of the initial coaching appointment and he clearly knows Australian players well. While they got DK's personality wrong, I personally think they attempted to make the right decision.

I'm sure they've never set out to hire a hopeless coach - they're just not very good at finding the right one.

I meant more that hiring an International coach alongside an experienced Australian assistant is a good approach. While Merrick wasn't the 'right coach' for the Nix he was still a good appointment. Whatever is wrong with the Nix seems to mean even the most experienced of football administrators may have trouble finding the 'right one', which I guess is a coach who can actually get the best out of the squad over a consistent multi-season time-frame.

I am not sure if we had many (any??) UK coaches successfully working with A-League clubs.  There is a good batch of German, Dutch and Spanish coaches apart from the home-grown guys.  But not all tasted lasting success,

I hope someone competent like Big Pete 65 could make us a table of A-League premiers and champions and list their winning coaches at the time.  This might be useful, especially if compared with the overall ratio of locally trained (not "locally born") coaches at the helm of HAL clubs.   For example, despite being Scottish born- and -bred, Merrick is an Australian coach in my books (his coaching development was done chiefly at AIS as I recall).  I think it would show guys like Ernie, Arnie and Ange sharing a few of the titles over the last decade.

Once caretaker job fine, twice maybe ok,  but 3 times begs the question from any potential employer why wasn't he good enough to be top dog.

Apart from Amor for that season at Adelaide, every single coach of the year has been an Australian coach. Mulvey, Merrick and McKinna were born overseas but are basically Australians as you say.

Completely unrelated side note while looking up the stats. Of the 12 Johnny Warren medal winners so far, two of them were playing for the Nix when they won and five of them have played for the Nix at some point - more than any other club.

I don't think he ever coached the Black Caps and he isn't an Aussie.
