Des is favourite to get the top job from what I've heard, already ringing around recruiting backroom staff.

I always thought Green Eggs and Ham did ok at the helm - 7th is better than 9th, and it was very nearly 6th.

“Bring back Buck”.

Would at least get them playing for the shirt and pride of the club (what's left of it). We have to come to terms with that we are not world beaters. And build an armour of culture and go from there. Sure a couple of big signings will help, but they can be unwanted egos in a club that's built on being a unit first and foremost.

Is this really the best we can do, or attract? Back To The Future, where we were 'underwhelming' under this guy last stint. What do they say about doing the same thing again and again expecting a different outcome? Oh, dear....

Buck is better than noone! we need a coach/manager NOW!

Do you actually think that coaching the Wellington Phoenix is a plum job? That big name, big reputation coaches will be queuing round the block to coach a team which has generally performed horribly for years, has no real money to speak of or pulling power to attract players, are pretty much a basket case and are staring down the barrel of an FFA gun in terms of actually existing for any decent length of time?

I'd say our choices aren't exactly limitless. My only hope is that whoever does get the job doesn't end up being the complete clusterf**k that we ended up with last season

Apparently I'm apathetic, but I couldn't care less.

Having Des might help recruitment of All Whites on the fringes of clubs as he is now in that set up?

I personally like the way he wanted us to play with Greenie and would like to see them build on that - they should at least have knowledge of who locally is worth a shot, more so than someone from the middle of Europe etc.

His potential hiring is different to what it was - where are in an even weaker position to negotiate and to attract and need to be realistic about this.

24 Points from 19 games, not bad compared to PTWCTHECITAL 17 in 21.

May also know some out of contract fringe Stoke players, or guys at say Championship level worth a punt. Find Nix the next Ifill!

If the speculation is accurate that Des is about to get the top job, there would need to be buy-in from NZF as Des already has a contract, working for them.

No, I don't think it's plum job, and our choices would not be limitless, but if Des is appointed, I'd really like the club to explain their reasoning. And also tell the fans what they hope for by reappointing a coach they have previously 'auditioned' but rejected for the same job.

Given how Domey was talking about on the Podcast recently, it sounded like we were aiming 'higher' than Des.

I mean that with respect to Des, but if true; maybe our target manager declined and he was our fall back?

It is clear the amount of bollocks this is taking is that we had slapper as our man.

Then he slapped and we have had to revert to des

I would agree with you on that.

If Des was ever the first choice then this would have been sorted at least a few weeks ago without waiting for the grand final.

it fits in nicely with the rumours that the Nix and NZF were working together, although they said Heraf was going to get the job but Buckingham makes more sense, he has the licence, knows the players and if costs are shared with NZF he'll be cheap

The announcement that the league will be stopping for international breaks was only made a couple of weeks back and I feel that may have altered the clubs thinking on the possibility of appointing Des quite a lot. He may not have been in the running at all until the leagues stance changed.

The reasoning is "we tried to get a bunch of other coaches but they all said no, or they slapped David Carney"

Hey, Dom, see that big stadium with all the empty yellow seats? Well, I've got this football club, and we're desperate to find a coach, any coach, and I hear you Portugeesees are pretty good at the game. Interested?

i wish the club would just come out and say they've given the job to Des and be done with it! The amount of time they waste trying to get anyone better is ridiculous. We are unlikely to attract an aussie who knows the league with the correct qualifications given we have a noose hanging over our heads.

Of course the short list may not have Slapper on it at all - it might be some one like Rudan waiting to hear on the Sydney FC job ( which doesn’t look like it is his) and the Phoenix is simple down the pecking order. If it is Buck, as rumoured here, then why haven’t they announced it? Unless Other threads in this forum and Sydney Herald ramblings have a vague truth?
