I thought Joel was great in Melbourne. I thought Burns looked really dangerous with Joel feeding him from wide ont he right.

Incredible stamina. No shame. Yellow Fever.

Phoenix fans. We have to win them over one fan at a time.

For someone that hadn't kicked a ball in anger for a month, he didn't look rusty at all. Was happy with what I saw from him.

Cool calm composed and no sacks whacked. Not a bad run. Hard News, what do you think?

He fitted right in with our speed in the second half, once Victory players tired.

Actually, getting outplayed quite a bit these days

Showed real poise.  Him &  Neymar Burns might be real good down the stretch.

U21 deals - anything announced?

Smithy I think mentioned a whisper of Andrew Blake. It appears Logan Rogerson is heading to the Nix too - but not sure on what basis - Acadmey, FSE, or U21 deal. Rogerson was top goal scorer for U17s in the Oceania qualifying tournament.

Rogerson playing for Wellington United in the Phoenix Cap Prem team, so I assume he's here at WeeNix level.

He's playing for the Huawei Wellington United Phoenix Academy Football School of excellence in the Capital Premier league.

They have scored 19 goals in 2 games.  A chance they may win it.

Agent has learned to STFU! That is news!

Permalink Permalink

Its interesting because I don't think he has been as good since the break and this contract talk happened. I noticed last week it didn't look like he was all pally with his mates up front. Dare I ask but could there be a rift in there? His agents comments are not the greatest.

I appreciate a good striker can be selfish but not that selfish as it hasn't  been for the betterment of the team.

I don't think he's been bad at all; not sure what you guys are talking about. His fortunes have mirrored that of the rest of the team; he's a professional, there isn't some big story there.

Burns has to play as good as he can if we want's more money, not seeing him not trying. He said he is motivated to get to another playing level after the game against Germany. But don't worry, we get a few new exciting players next season, Roly skyped with all his friends. We getting whole bunch of exNetherlands U20's who could not quit make it.

I don't know, i feel like last couple of weeks he has been a bit greedy and tried to beat 4-5 players instead of passing. But we haven't been scoring either, so maybe he was just trying to start something himself as nothing was working.

He's been playing like that since the beginning of the season.

There's not many 'game changers' in any league.  Show him the money. Put him outside the cap and continue building. Go forward not backwards.

The quotes in that article are a bit of a laugh. Burns was an injury risk coming off an average season at Newcastle and a lame spell in Korea. Now it's all, well he won't be staying with Wellington, implication: he can't further his career there...still trotting out this BS "Phoenix, which rejected a $1.2 million offer for Burns from Shanghai Shenhua during January's AFC Asian Cup 2015".

Not sure that we should break the bank to keep him or pay his sister to work at a fashion show, but he'd be a very difficult player to replace. Is he better than Ifill though? At the moment his stats equal Ifill's first season...

We'll pocket the $350k and let him go if he gets a decent offer.  Meantime we've got some games to play.

If he has an opportunity to go to a bigger club then of course he'll go.  You don't negotiate a $350k buyout clause if that's not your intention.

He's a hired gun and it's been of mutual benefit.

Bring on the next Ifill/Rolly when required.

We could always make him a Marquee if we want to keep him.

On  a pure statistical basis, this has been Burns' greatest ever season. I see two possible reasons:

either a) The system we play suits him and he has flourished

or b) Things have just clicked this season

Like most things it is probably a bit of a and b. I feel that if Burns stays next season he will do well but probably not as well. If you look at his record then I would not be comfortable making his a marquee If we were to sell Burns, pocket $350k and buy Jamie McLaren for slightly cheaper then I would be happy with that. I think that we should be open to offers for Burns. Every player can be bought if the price is right.

McLaren would be a worthy investment regardless. He has shone in his games and although his hattrick the other night took his tally to just 6, his overall contribution to the team has been awesome.

I admit I am being probably unnecessarily negative. I just wonder what changed where he knocked in 10 goals in 10 games (or whatever it was) and the next 16 he has 3 (sorry if my stats are not correct)

I guess we could ask the same about Brockie.

A goal a game is never going to be sustainable in any league, unless you're Ronaldo/Messi.

If he does and we get the minimum 350k release fee, that isn't bad business tbh. He did come here with a history of knee issues, so there is always a chance they might flare up again.

Finding a replacement might be harder but we do have a visa spot to use. I would also be tempted to see if the Victory would consider releasing Kosta a year early. Would love to see him back here under Ernie.

I think Kosta would be on a decent wedge and I am not so sure we could afford him. It depends though. If you take the salary cap and subtract the substantials like Kenny, Burns, and Brockie, then add in Appiah, an import and Kosta..... It would be close.

I think he has missed a few games between ACup & Germany, prob 3 or 4.  I think a lot of planning goes into stopping the main guys as the season gets on. Note last 3or 4 weeks, Janko & Keogh not scoring, not even Berisha until last weekend. But that close attention and game plans open up other guys and that's where  we see Brosque, Smeltz, Ibini, McLaren & Kenny coming alive and finding space.

As much as it would be nice to win the league with all NZ players, having too many [or even a few] fudges us up when the AWs play and the Aussies don't recognise the window.

There's no transfer fees between A-League clubs so Perth would have to release Maclaren... very possible considering their situation.

nah, they just need to have him sign a contract with a different entity, then when we sign him have the FFA prematurely announce it before lodging a complaint and after a long drawn out saga demand compensation for his release.

That's how transfer fees work in the A league.

And then we pay his sister to appear in a Gareth Morgan sponsored fashion show, right?

10 goals 2 assists in his first 11 games and then 3 goals and 4 assists in his next 11 games. 5 less goal contributions I'm not to worried I think once teams realised the form he was in he has been getting marked a bit more than Krishna. The Asian Cup break hurt him had he started all games at the cup I don't think his form would have dipped all that much.

theres a Tui ad right there!

Also, if (when) burns goes, why would we want Kosta, he's very much a wide player not a middle of the field striker - quite frankly we sell burns then we need to replace him with a central striker - we have plenty of wide players already.
