Haven't there been rumours that both Kosta and Archie are on their way out though?

Archie about to re-sign. Phoenix have denied the Kosta rumour.

There is talk that Kosta is not happy but I've not seen a report put his name to an article so who knows the truth to it. Archie, well he was always going to be resigned unless another club came up with an insane monetary offer with years.

Its rumours so you take them with a pinch. Besides, the Melbourne hierarchy could well envision a front 3 of those guys and would be crazy to let any of them slip. They will blast most other teams off the park if they have a quailty 10 behind them that can feed them the ball all day.

I guess we see how good Gorrin is, but if he IS capable of doing the Riera role and also getting more forward box to box, then the starting squad and cover looks more balanced; potentially better than the 'Nix side that won 6, drew 1 and lost 1 mid season. Maybe a bit light at CB/FB cover still, but not too bad.

But getting 35-40+ goals out of the strike force looks the issue, to me, now.  Could do with a quality striker, otherwise looking pretty useful. Ifill, fit and a kiwi, would be handy.

                   Moss

       Fenton Sig Dura Manny

              Riera    Gorrin

Krishna   Hernandez  Cunningham

                    Brockie

or push Gorrin further forward and/or rotate Cunningham/Krishna/Brockie positionally any way you like

FB/CB cover: Boxall, Adams, Caira

Midfield cover:  Lia, Ridenton, Hicks plus with Riera seemingly covered at DM by Gorrin

Forward cover: Boyd, Ifill?, Watson

Edit - and as some-one else has said, we are fairly dependent on Carlos behaving and staying fit

Not sure this tells us much more, but interesting ... not sure what you read into that first line below.

“We’re releasing him quite early, he could still play under-21 football next season.

“He’s a great lad. He drives you nuts because he always wants to play football.

“He came to this country at 16, couldn’t speak a word of English and now he talks like a Mackem!

“For me, it’s quite a hard moment to see him getting released without getting that opportunity, but that’s the way it is.

“Now he’s going off to New Zealand and you hope in two years time, someone is bidding to bring him back to England.

“If that’s the case, do I think we missed out? No, I just think that was his destiny.”

Why not?
Young, talented, crucial position, he'd have high demands. I could see the owners being convinced based on that.

FFA wouldn't necessarily be convinced though.

Like it except maybe Boyd to start ahead of Krishna or K for Brockie and Boyd for K. One more striker- perhaps Archie the A-league Eto, [edit- been resigned?]and a utility midfielder defender who can cover DM- maybe Eager?

This.

On that note, I saw Stein in the international departure terminal yesterday afternoon. He's now in either Sydney or Melbourne. Read in to that what you will...

I was talking to him on Wednesday. He was heading back to Belgium on Friday to visit family. He said he was currently in talks with a couple of A-League teams. He likes the A-League and wants to continue playing in it. He is still after a two year contract.

Mjp - I like that line up,   If gorrin is half way decent, then cunni and krishna can play "proper" pacey wide player roles.  I'm thinking anyone up front is going to be getting ample opportunities to score.  Reira/gorrin also allows fenton decent cover to go for his forays too.

I cant wait for next season.  stoked "annus unf***king unluckiest in-the-worldest" is over.

Can I join the Sign Eager Movement also?

I don't understand why a young player in England would want to come to the Phoenix if they were any good. Im not sure being good at reserve level is necessarily a recommendation for anything - didn't we have a Man U reserve a while back at Miramar who wasn't considered Phoenix level?

They are excited by his signing, but the Wellington Phoenix say Alejandro Gorrin is not a marquee player.

Sunderland under-21 coach Kevin Ball told the Hartlepool Mail newspaper that the Spanish midfielder had joined the Phoenix as their marquee player - meaning his wages could be paid outside of the A-League's salary cap.

But a Phoenix spokesman yesterday said that was not the case.

Wouldn't Gorrin potentially replace Hernandez and leave Lia in the starting line up?

Adams is the new Musa?

Not really a surprise we let Adams go, there is just not room in a squad of 23 for four CB's. I wonder if he will stick around and play for Tee Dubs, to keep himself in the frame for any future call ups.

I am suprised he's been let go when JBS and potentially Watson and Gulley have been kept on.

Different positions. Think Ernie wants to cover the 4th CB spot with someone a little more versatile. I was surprised he was picked in the first place but thought he looked ok from the limited amount he was seen. Not really suited to playing out wider though.

I think we've had better CBs in the past NZ Under-20 squads (e.g James Musa), but he looked okay in the last two appearances he had. It might be hard for Luke Adams to find another professional club now though.

So I take it that JBS signing means that Timmins is out of the picture?

Permalink Permalink

I think Adams looked more comfortable on the ball than Musa. I got the impression the other players didn't really trust Musa playing the ball in their own half. Its a pity because Musa seemed to tick most of the other boxes.

I don't read it that way. I think if Timmins gains Australian residency he will be offered a contract regardless of JBS. In an emergency Ernie could play him as a CB which to me is why he let Adams go. If he doesn't Ernie will be after someone similar.

I'm not convinced by re-signing JBS, but he should be on a low wage and we don't know exactly what positions players like Fenton or Boxall will be playing so there is room for both of them.

With 4 roster spots left, it will be either Shermy or Timmins and as 2nd Best says it sounds like Timmins doesn't want to stay.

Dura/Siggy/Boxall/Manny will be out CB depth. If we have to go lower than that, we would be picking guys up on short term deals anyway so Adams was always gonna go.

Didn't Ernie say he wanted someone who could cover fullback or cb? I know he wanted to add 1 striker, 2 midfielders and a versatile defender, all of which he can do. He has to be aware that on international days he could lose all 3 CBs. Whether or not its Timmins I still think another defender will be signed regardless of what happens to JBS. We'll see.

I thought Adams looked an interesting prospect. I would've kept him bearing in mind our two incumbents are not getting any younger or faster and with another season or so under his belt, Adams might have just slotted in there.
