Have never been to Hull but I guess it might look something like the Auckland waterfront.

I was in Edinburgh a few years back and it was just like that so Hull wouldn't be to dissimilar I think.

Probably the crackdown and bad press. But I think it can bounce back in a few years.

Nines taking over.

I wonder if its got to do with Friday being on Waitangi day meaning a $8 bottle of sharke beer will cost $9.20 so a manky hotdog 15% more?

Aucklanders have decided the 9s is cheaper I guess. Plus league is a way more entertaining sport (compared to rugby but recognise 7s is different again)

genuine stars play in the nines too. People actually go to watch the sport.

With the sevens people have realised that you can dress up, get pissed and act like an idiot on courtenay place without having to pay for a ticket to the event and pretend to watch sevens. While I know a few who do go for the sevens are sick of the drunk idiots, so no longer go either.

Its not a matter of comparing whether or not Aucklanders have chosen to go to the 9s over the 7s. The lessening interest IS because of the crackdown - it has definitely been a party event. Rugby fans [7s] will continue to go for the football, its the party-crowd that will have reduced its numbers. The 9s will always be popular in Auckland as league and the NRL are so strong there, especially given they have the name players particpating.

I read that there will be no surcharge at this year's sevens. Still, $150 for two days of not watching rugby and drinking terrible beer is not for me. Oh, and the buffoons in costumes are also off putting, as are the morons who are allowed out only one weekend of the year and act like total clowns as a result.

You are correct but if you are an Auckland party troll, are you gonna pay $X00 and go to Wellington or stay in Auckland and save yourself $X00? If you used to go (let's say the last 3) then Wellington is no longer a novelty, you save $X00 and 9s are still new. You can't deny that there used to be a huge Auckland contingent coming down which now stay for the 9s. I guess only ticket sellers would know the split of sales for locals v out of towners.

The visit by IOC people in the Olympics admission process changed the promotion of the event, as apparently they were horrified at the carnival aspect of a supposed sporting event. The sport is attempting to move away from it's origins, which have always been about a day out, originally as a pre-season or end-of-season festival. “Rugby Sevens are synonymous with people having a party. There’s a saying that if you’re not enjoying yourself, you can just turn around and watch the rugby."  (Gavin Hastings (and others)):

Tickets? Tickets? We talkin’ about tickets?

Nines may not be around after 2018 anyway. The aussies want it.

I reckon football should set up a rival competition.  Rugby has the 7s, League has the 9s, how about the 11s?

so what is so vital about the 'sport' going for Olympics? Or is it just the Wellington event that is an out-of-step pissup?

Cricket World Cup Final is on at the same time, Stadium might have to leave the mezzanine bar open for a few hours afterwards to watch if NZ make the final.

Hi. I'm not a Nix fan and don't really follow the A-League but by curiosity, i was wondering if Wellington have some away fans? Even against Brisbane? because it's a long journey.

There are generally some Phoenix fans at every A-League game, be they ex-pats or travellers.

The dangerous Liaison forum here has plans for meet-ups and when groups travel.

The last two away games against Melbourne Victory the Away bay (capacity 350) has either been sold out of very close to it.

Good away supporters groups in Malebourne, Brisbane, Perth and Sydney (in particular) - check them out on Facebook.
