There is nothing I love more than loud techno music drowning out a football crowd in full voice. Especially after scoring a goal. That makes me so excited I do a teeny-tiny fist pump.

I must admit I do quite like music after a goal, and we used to have it too, what happened? I distinctly remember that Zombie Nation song pumping a few times during the 6-0 GCU game!

Probably not. We should look into doing our own tickets and stop fans being shafted for an extra 20% on a ticket every week.

Won't ever happen. Stadia outsource the ticketing to a ticket agency. Westpac partners Ticketek. Bad luck. (Ticket Direct is worse)

Would be no surprise at all if it was the stadium doing the shafting.

Newstalk ZB Talkback with Kerre Woodham
Talking Phoenix RIGHT NOW. Says Gareth packed a sad and threatening to take games out of Wellington. Can't believe people saying that the quality of the food puts them off going to the Nix. Says the cost of tickets doesn't sound that expensive?

Stand by for casual fans calling up with their excuses (which are worth hearing to be honest, to know why there is such apathy). Open minds people!ahmad2012-01-24 20:14:22

Awesome, caller #1 is a fat slob that cbf and has instant access to YouTube to watch all the best bits.

Winrar!

Also thinks paying for an illegal stream is better than going to the game. ahmad2012-01-24 20:19:30

Price of food is such a bullsh*t excuse. Honestly why do you need to buy something there anyway if you are there for only 2 hours? The problem with crowds is just a general novelty wearing off thing. It has happened with the Hurricanes and even the crowds for one day cricket have dropped dramatically.

I don't think that many games will be taken away from Wellington. This was more a move by Gareth Morgan to raise awareness. With all this talk it should be a great crowd this week.

Caller #2 asks "whatever happened to picnics?".

Shocked that you can't take a picnic for the family along any more.

Says people should harden up and eat before going, or just stump up and eat at there.

I think the host caught the wrong impression from Gareth? Says that he's blaming the poor crowds on the bad food?

about 14 years ago · edited over 13 years ago
The ticket prices ALONE aren't the issue. It's all the associated costs as well as the damn fees on the tickets etc. The food ALONE is not the problem either but all these little things come together and a general feeling of not getting value for money develops.

Part of the issue is the club giving the impression they do not care about these things.

People are telling the club that they think it's too expensive and the club's response? No it's not, stop making excuses. That kind of attitude most certainly won't solve the attendance problems, of that I am certain.

As I stated earlier, it is close to $50 for me to go to a nix game.

If I want a beer at the game, add whatever that is ($6 is it?)

god forbid I want somehot chips, thats an extra $4.

Now its $60.

its a luxury for me and many others. thats the reality of it. plain and simple.

Gareth needs to come and live with the peasants to see what is and isn't expensive.

One option is to be more flexible with season passes...
1) Sunday season pass for sunday games.  Same with Saturdays.  might help attracting those that work or can't attend a particular day in the weekend.
2) Pick 6 pass. Pick 6 games throughout the season to attend.

Obviously the price of these options would need to be in between the season ticket price (on a per gae basis), and the individual game price.

One thing that appears to work reasonably well back in Scotland is half season tickets that go on sale in the run up to Xmas. Quite a lot of people end up with these as xmas presents. Had Nix done that this year it would have equalled 6 games.

I know they did the Nix Six thing but I think it would've worked better for all games after xmas for the very reason mentioned above - they could have been bought as xmas presents.

No offence, but is there anything that happens which doesn't make you reconsider becoming a member?
Not sure just what your referring to,for your information i have been a member since early on and have renewed every season.Have also taken the same position with games  being taken away  as before.Dont like it and dont agree with it but happy to accept a couple of away games. As far as i can recall thats the only issue i have stated would make me reconsider being a member.Given the thousands i have spent on merchandise and associated other costs that come along with supporting the Phoenix  if i choose not to renew because Wellington Phoenix has become New Zealand  Phoenix so what.

The amount of freebie tickets that go to Corporates for events in Wellington is a shambles.

The people who don't show up aren't the ones costing you money, it's the ones you let in for free!

Sponsors pay for exposure, not match tickets!

On the weekend street parking time limits finish at 6. So unless you leave your car somewhere for something else beforehand it isn't an issue. The friday games you might have to purchase 30-60 minutes of parking ($2-$4) to play it safe.

On Sat/Sun you don't have to pay after 6 but time limit does apply:

Saturday & Sunday:8.00am - 6.00pm
(no fee required however time restriction applies)

has anyone ever been pinged?
Yep.

Correct. I can barely go to a game without at least one person I know having free tickets because their dad's brother's cousin or whoever got some tickets through their work etc.

I can't deny thatI have never benefitted from this either but I am certain I have spent a lot more on attending games than many others. There will be people who get free tickets every single week and that is out of order.

Half of these freebies are in boxes too so even more money down the drain!

Got the bus to the last home gme. Bus driver cottoned on that we were off to the football (must have been the hat, scarf, shirt) and offered us two tickets he had. He was clearly not a football fan, but had two free tickets somehow.

I know someone who has free tickets to every single game.

He doesn't go to a single game.

I don't think it's because of the food.

about 14 years ago · edited over 13 years ago
Exactly. You really have to wonder how much money we are spunking up the wall by giving away piles and piles of free tickets, many of which end up in the hands of people who would actually pay to get in but obviously are not going to turn down a freebie.

I, like Steve-O, can't deny ever benefiting from freebies but I take advantage of them as I know there are always plenty going around.

I only have 1 problem with stumping up the $25 ticket price and that is I know that there are people in the stadium who haven't paid to be there and that sh*ts me right off!

I also get like that with airlines too. I hate the thought of some clown getting exactly the same treatment as me and paying less for it.

Another suggestion..
Invite the Executive Chef for Spotless Services Catering out for dinner at the stadium one game night. Get him to try the extortionately priced options he's passing off as "food",
discuss options he could use to improve his product, affordability... and his reputation. (You might like to bring some members of the media fraternity and make a real night of it while you're at it.)

They've had the contract since 2002, when's it up for re-negotiating? If things haven't improved by then, joint venture with them,  and contract them to provide better food, reasonably priced, and we'll all be better off... or assist another company you control to secure the contract.

Improving,,on the up, a work in progress from Italiano and the Nix. Bring on the bathroom bling in '24! COYN!

 Yeah
Gareth's raised the issue of crowds being poor.

There are many great suggestions that improvements could be made to services and prices getting people to the stadium, at the stadium and returning home but many are out of the Nix's control.

If those who own the issues don't want to deal with them-then out them to the public, summon a media posse...be seen to be a champion for the Nix and standing up for a fair deal for everyone in Wellington...but tell the world about it... just like he's doing now.

The typical Wellington family wants a good time out at the Phoenix for a reasonable cost- well priced tickets with flexible options, reasonable transport options that sync with the game  times and/or reasonably priced parking, comfortable access sheltered from the weather when its bad, inexpensive, quality food options with some variety etc.
If the total experience was then effectively and repeatedly marketed as better than ever before to re-engage the Wellington Community, surely more people would come.

This week's game is shaping up to be HUGE.

WE NEED TO WIN DAMMIT!!!!!

That's the first battle.

Then we need to bring these fans back. But the war will be half won if there is a joyful victory on Sunday. Tough ask if ahmad2012-01-24 22:49:40

It's pretty hard to change the apathy of the public who stay at home. Changing tickets prices or providing different half time entertainment, even improving food options won't do it. This mob just aren't motivated.

The only suggestion I have is to lobby Sky to make all home matches delayed. It would upset those out of town, but those that sit on their arse 20 minutes away might just roll up.
