Although I don't mind him, I'm pretty sure that that article is not citing him, far too many long words.

I thought he wanted to go to Korea or somewhere. They do like big defenders there, but he was obviously still not seen to be good enough.
So to go to a more competitive environment he has to go to a team that finished three spots below us, is in a rebuilding phase and has been in danger of a player revolt in the last few days due to unpaid wages. Whatever...

haah it makes me chuckle that Van Egmond thinks Dodd would be a good addition to the Jets' midfield. I have always maintained that Dodd is a great CB, probably I'd rate him 80/100, but as CM??? I think 40/100 is being generous. The lad can surely run and tackle, but his headers aren't great, his touch is poor and when under pressure, i.e. after having made a mistake or two, his game goes to custard.
He won't be missed too much in my book.

40/100 as a C.B.

As a midfielder, lmfao.
Can run, yes, but not with the ball.
Poor first touch, especially under pressure.
Custard is his game, any thing else is an illusion.
I hope he plays for the jets, anywhere, its good for us.

I thought Van Egmond was planning to use Dodd at the back from what I read...
"...so that being the case, we might push Ljubo [Milicevic] further forward and have another person at the back," Jets coach Gary van Egmond said.
That person could be Dodd.
"He [Dodd] is a winner, he's a decent size and a good communicator who can organise well, so I think the balance of the central pair, who ever we get, has got to be a person who can do that," van Egmond said.... "
Anyway - Dodd's a donkey

But not nice to hear that from a player who was loved by (most) fans. I basically read it as he feels he's putting in more effort than anyone else, and wants more passion in the team. Karl was indeed one of the most committed players we've had along with Siggy, Aloisi and Brown, but if I've got the right end of the stick here my respect for him is gone, and that's a shame because he was a great CB (despite what Auskiwi says).

I think Karl moving from the Nix to the Jets is a win win - it will raise the standard of both teams.

I think he's taking a shot at some of the underperformers at the Nix, and I think he's right.

Dodd, was minging in most games but had the odd pearler.. but to be honest he won't be missed by the Nix, Atleast he spoke how he was feeling but just because he wasn't resigned doesn't mean he needed to let rip.. He's a chubby wee fella is Dodd.

Looking quite likely for Dodd

This is from todays paper, reporting on the trial match
"Jets hopeful Karl Dodd, though short on match fitness, impressed van Egmond.
The former Wellington Phoenix hard man partnered Angelo Costanzo in the heart of defence for most of the hit-out.
"He is not in the best shape, but he is doing quite well," the coach said. "He is organised, he is comfortable and knows the game. He is a talker, he draws players, he plays back the opposite way . . . he does a lot of good things.
"We will have a look at him between now and the end of the week and go from there."

He was solid but unspectacular. The weakest of our 4 CB's IMO.
However, he never seemed to get injured and I will always remember him for getting Griffiths sent off

IMO he was our best CB behind Siggy. Don't really rate Dura.

Maybe Dodd was/is on to something? After some of last seasons performances i think so.

Well I think the competition for places between 3 genuine contenders led to some great performances...and Dura is a better player than what he has shown so far...he's had a couple of glaring errors which looked fairly bad, but he's got a chance to put that right this season...
yeh, i guess it is no secret i'm a Dodd fan. All the haters are slow in suggesting possible replacements.

IMO the CB pairing was too unsettled last season. McKain started there, Dodd moved back there and because of injuries the pairing often changed from game to game leading to errors. In saying that, it was of course much better performed than in the season prior though that is probably just as much down to playing a defensive formation with two DM's.

Considering how solid we looked outside of 2 or 3 shocking games in defense, Siggy, Dura and Dodd did imensely well to interchange as they did IMO, of course McKain and Brown in front of them helped, but one of them may need to be replaced by someone more attacking and creative in our starting line-up next season. Dodd was our 2nd Best CB last season, pick of the bunch the season before.

It's a tough choice, really. Both Brown and McKain were two of our best performed players last season but neither is great going forward. IMO We have to play a diamond 4-4-2 with Diego at the top and either McKain or Brown the DM. Not both.

Last year I thought 2 defensive midfielders was the correct formation for us.
This year, I agree, I'm hoping we can remain solid at the back with only 1

Spot on.
Puts pressure on left and right midfielders to pull their defensive weight - in that vein Daniel's defense was much improved last season.

hmmm...does that mean possibly Lia in the midfield?
Brown did quite well with runs into the box and scores goals. I know I'm going to get panned for this (and I haven't seen him hit many long range efforts) but coming into the box from the midfield he kinda does a Paul Scholes job for us...very hard to pick up...
yeh, I'm not sure about the shape of the team. It would be really tough to leave out Brown or McKain and rather silly to push McKain back into the defence. His skills and workrate need the space, possibly the safety of being out of the penalty box in case he does catch someone!
dang this is becoming the formation thread isn't it?

+1, his balance of defensive and attacking play worked well for us last year, but I'd rather McKain holding with Diego the creative mid.[QUOTE=martinb]yeh, I'm not sure about the shape of the team. Maybe Siggy and McKain as CBs with Diego and Brown in midfield would be the best way of balancing the side. Would rather McKain and Brown in the team than one of them + Dura. Did Sigmund and McKain play together in defence at all last year?

But McKain has an amazing workrate. runs his legs off. and is a lot scarier proposition in the midfield, cos if he does draw the occasional foul it won't be a penalty. and I think it is the best place for him. He enjoys the space, and not quite having the same responsiblity.
but yeh. actually wouldn't mind your suggestion though. So who would be captain? Siggie? would Dura wear that? it would be a big public dressing down. basically him getting sacked. Has Dura been tried at right back? there was a lot of talk about it but it never happened. And Manny has played well.
yeh a Brown Diego Lia Bertos midfield would be interesting. hmmm...Lia is really a bit of an unknown quantity after having had a year out. It also means we are going to have a lot of fast wide players with no position to play in. If Mulligan has sorted his crap out, would he be bracketed for a right mid, with greater defensive work? I've lost all faith in Ferrante...

I wouldn't be too worried about the back half of the park, it's the front half that needs sorting out.
Two out and out strikers are a must - they will obviously need quality ball from midfielders capable of creating (Diego) and support from midfielders who can get wide and forward at pace and support (Leo). I get to a 4-4-2 diamond as Diego seems to best fit the role of play maker behind the front 2, Leo is best out wide and, for balance, you would need some one playing widish on the other side (Kruse or Daniel). Leaves a DM playing in front of our very solid back 4 - McKain or Brown can scrap for that position.
Simple
P.S. Wouldn't mind that 2nd striker being announced - that signing is, for me, the make or break for the season.
