Yes that's my point. Only four clubs in Britain could begin to consider themselves big on a worldwide scale. And yes, before any Celtic or Rangers mongs come in here, that includes you. And no, you aren't big.

Celtic are a big club.

No they aren't. Like Newcastle, no one cares about them outside Britain.

uhhh, define 'no one'

Plenty of people follow the ugly sisters in Aus and In Nz

33000 went to the Celtic Roar match a couple years back.. That would filll the ROF

So therefore your logic is flawed.

TBH any club in the EPl or Celtic/Rangers would be a coup for us.

ive got a song that wont take long, Adelaide are rubbish.. the second verse is same as the first.. ADELAIDE ARE RUBBISH

Hmm, I reckon we need a team around mid table EPL? I heard that Perennial strugglers Liverpool could be looking for a few pre-season games... No Champs league qualifiers either.

Middlesborough could work with Killen, Scott Mcdonald and Brad Jones all from Aus/NZ.

Middlesborough? Sort of like going to a top restaurant and getting served up a plate of baked beans.

I wonder who the nz supporters of the team that comes will support.

Listening to a bunch of Aussie sing, You'll Never Walk Alone at the Celtic v. Brisbane game was cringeworthy.

That's hardly relevant basis for discussing how 'big' a club is.

Besides that, it's also wrong, since Celtic has a very sizeable following outside of Scotland.el grapadura2010-04-06 09:18:09

Nice one

If not EPL, maybe some Italian team? They tend to do some pre-season in the area (Asia tours and such). Inter/AC Milan would be nice.

Really? I wonder how much people in Norway know about Celtic. Or how often people in Romania hear about Celtic. I suspect the answer to both is not a lot.

A good way of identifying a truly big club is whether the average football fan can associate these five key aspects of the club:

Name
Country of origin
Home ground
Home kit
Famous personalities (players, managers etc)

If your average football fan can easily name all five then that club is genuinely a big club.

Three for me, and two for them.

I know for a fact that there's a Celtic supporters club in Croatia. Just an example.

And Celtic ticks all the boxes you've just posted there.

You are severely underestimating the success Celtic has had in the past, and what a big name they really are.

Rangers are more successful than Celtic and they aren't big either. It's not just about trophies.

Ouch!
Unlikely, but would be great to see them here.
Perhaps Nth Qld Fury would be keen too. (Fowler or no Fowler?)
Terry would insist.Part of the money that bailed them out was from us so you owe us!

Exactly.

That's why Celtic are a big club in world terms, and Rangers aren't.el grapadura2010-04-06 10:11:24

No they can't. You just think they can because the football media here has a heavy British influence. People in South America wouldn't have a clue who Newcastle are and wouldn't care either.

Three for me, and two for them.

who gives a sh*t about South America we are talking about bringing a team to NZ ??

and do you have first hand experience about this "don't know and don't care" business or are you just havin a guess ?

Because you said Newcastle were one of the biggest clubs in the world. South America is a rather large part of the world in terms of population (and football).

And do i have experience? Yes. A few years ago several Argentine and Brazilian students came to our school on exchange. Fairly standard football fans, not too passionate or extreme followers of the game. Could name the big four in England and that was about it as far as British clubs went. Had barely heard of Newcastle.

We turned down Juventus in 2008. Wasn't considered worth it in terms of estimated attendance IIRC.

Partly also because it was Juventus B - all their best players (Italian, French, and other Euros) were in camp prior to EURO 2008.

so you talked to them about NUFC ?

and you do claim they barely heard of NUFC which means they HAVE heard of them, correct ?

Hearing about them doesn't make them a big club. I've heard of Kamen Ingrad in Croatia but it doesn't make them a big club.

Kamen Ingrad is kaput now.

A local tycoon bought the club from basically a village and tried to turn it into a strong top division club.

Massive fail.

sure, but the thing is you claim no one knows about NUFC in South America but know your saying they do ? or at least heard of them.

what one is it then ?

Just because you have heard of a club it does not mean you know about them. They may recognize the name Newcastle United but they wouldn't be able to tell you where they play, what they wear, or who their famous players are. Therefore they aren't a big club.

what is this ?

Buffon II's guide to "how you know a football club is a big one" ???????????????

lets forget about this "big club" sh*t for a second.

if NUFC (EPL since this morning !!) flew over to Wellington to play the Phoenix at the Westpac Stadium, do you think the attendance would reach the 30,000+ mark ?

What about Seatlle Sounders. They have a big Name in Freddie Ljungberg. and he does have a bit of the Beckham factor as his Calvin Klein posters would have been seen by a lot of Kiwis.

I heard that Henry may leave Barca for New York in the northern summer, so if that did eventuate then they could work also. Boyens plays for them as well.

This counts out Arsenal. Very few outside people would be able to name a star, except maybe Henry.Michael2010-04-06 12:31:16

I agree Michael. Only a truly global scale Arsenal aren't yet a big club. We are very close though.

I think Buffy is being just as, if not more than, unreasonable than whooooo atm.  Picking countries out of his backside and saying he thinks people don't know about Celtic there.  That's about as poor evidence for an argument as I bring to the table at times, I'm afraid to say.

I suppose it is off-season though.
