I just personally cannot stand Arsenal for two reasons. 1st - Arsene Wenger. The blokes got a great record of developing youth but i havent seen a manager who is so one eyed and complains so much. He thinks opposition players go out to break his team members legs. 2nd - They have bugger all English players. So thats why i would not come to watch arsenal.  Middlesborough and Sunderland speak for themselves as a result of supporting NUFC. Tommy_Smyth2010-04-12 12:27:12

Who cares if they have any English players?

Surely we're going to watch the Phoenix (who are at times hardly chock-full of New Zealanders).

How's my driving? - Whine here

Buffon, im proud to support the team that i was brought up watching. No doubt you are just one of them fans who picks a team who is successful and then bags other teams for not being as good as your team.

And talking of trophies, the "wonderful" Arsenal have not picked up anything since 2005 and will more than likely pick up nothing again this year. Even Newcastle will have more  silverware than the mighty gunners this year.

That's what I don't understand - surely hating a team would mean that you would be more likely to go along and vigorously support the Phoenix?

now your being childish.

You brought it upon yourself. Nobody cares about Newcastle outside of Britain and the odd expat in Australia, NZ etc.

Go ask your average football fan in Argentina, Chile or Russia if they know who Newcastle is and you'll get a fairly common answer. No.

I think you would find that even Leeds in League One would be a bigger draw-card then Whocastle   .

I suggested this in another thread a while ago but what about a two day tournament where 4 teams have two games (1 each day), and we invite 1 "Big name" team, a team from Asia and one other HAL team. We play the big team and the Asian team, ensuring decent interest in the nix fixtures, the big team get us and the other HAL team, and the Asian team gets 2 A-league teams who could be possible future opponents in the ACL. Having the Asian/Austrailian/Foriegn team means we could sell TV coverage and make money from TV rights. Also give the Big team the opportunity to sell coverage to its on-line subscribers.

It could become an annual event similar to the sevens and receive council funding to help promote, and make it a huge weekend for retailers and hospitality in Wellington.

This solution would check a lot of boxes for Tony & Terry
1) good money spinner as ticket prices could be increased due to admission on each day including two match's.
2) actually good preparation for the nix and a good chance to use some squad players  over the weekend.
3) Huge profile event that would bring visitors from Australia and Asia and possibly further if the Big team played another match in Australia.
4) it would also get huge media attention post WC as the country would still be buzzing about football

This is the most sense I've heard so far this off-season.  That in itself isn't high praise but rest assured I think this is an awesome idea.

Someone in contact with the club let Tony know about it.

i'm probably closer to the non-english, rugby supporting average kiwi sports follower than most on here, tho i've phoenix credentials with three seasons membership, and prefer football to rugby these days

what would I pay $50 bucks to see at the stadium v Phoenix?

Any EPL top 8, presume top 4 is out of the question, that leaves Everton, Tottenham, Perennial strugglers Liverpool, Aston Villa
Add Blackburn cause of the Nelson factor.  the rest i reckon (sorry) have just local fan draw power

Given the phoenix profile i reckon you'd market any fairly top Euro or Sth American side to fill the stadium, that had some exotic/flair/quality value.  i.e. don't have to be mega name, but can be marketed as quality and with a pedigree. including the likes of Bayern, Werder Bremen a good greek, turkish, dutch, french, italian, spanish, or sth american side.  So Ajax, olympique lyon, juventus, roma, valencia, galatasaray, panathinaikos, boca juniors, racing, flamengo, fluminense, nacional.  Maybe a marketable US club.  I know stuff all about all of those sides but i've heard of them and could be convinced they'd be well worth seeing with a bit of marketing

pre phoenix season, all the phoenix fans turn out = 12-15k
good international club side, 10k from out of town soccer and sports fans, who may never see the likes of a boca juniors otherwise, and how the phoenix would go against them, plus a good welly weekend
so you only need another 5-7k locals to fill the stadium

that just needs a good marketing line - some hot latins with abs and flowing locks on a billboard, a couple of name players, a sth american country club trophy winning side, with a rich history that the tv add guys could lather up, for the phoenix to take on

i'd guess to make the package work you'd need to have a couple of games, consecutive weekends here and accross the tasman, but hopefully something like the above would be marketable there as well - not another asian champions side

lol hilarious - how do you force that perennial strugglers in there - you can't even edit it out!!
wicked

i'd pay to see that quality side from that city on the mersey with you'll never walk alone as it's anthem specially if gerrard played at least 45mins

Corinthians would be a good choice - Ronaldo and Roberto Carlos could be very sellable to the NZ sporting public. And even though our pre-season falls in the middle of the Brazilian top division season, Palmeiras came out to Australia at the same time a couple of years back so it wouldn't be impossible.

Plus there's a lot of Brazilians in NZ these days, sure many of them would come to see the game even if they don't come to Nix games regularly. Corinthians is the second most popular club in Brazil (it's also intensely disliked by Brazilians who aren't their fans), doing very well in Copa Libertadores this season, plus the appeal of Ronaldo and Roberto Carlos = win.

Lock it in Terry and Tony.

Nix vs Corinthians, that would be special.

A bit of this from Roberto and this from R9, fantastic.

Splitting costs 4-ways could be very tempting for Terry.

And assuming timing all worked out the other Aussie clubs would surely support it given it will take some of the strain off of them.

Would this so much.

And guessing it wouldn't be too difficult to whip up interest in a top Argentinian side in the wake of the World Cup. Especially if the Argies do well (which they probably won't).

I'd go see the Nix play Boca, as would a few people I know and a lot of people on here, but I don't think they'd pull the more casual fans who graced RoF with their presence for the post season Nix games.

Still, I'd be stoked and that is surely all that matters.
