We've had loads of players on in the past. Dura's been on at least once, Greenie's been on, and Domey a couple of times.

We've had a run of them recently because it's pre-season and everyone's up for it.

Def not keen on Dewhurst, Piney, De Jong or GGW. I was impressed with 7's commentator and I actually thought that potentially we could do an Andrew Voss type thing (Warriors commentator former Channel 9) with the Phoenix and perhaps have a diff colour man (Michael Bridges did a stellar job with Channel 7 during Liverpool match

The pod is awesome and you guys fully deserved the mention at the media awards. You guys give an insight into the Phoenix that is certainly absent from any other media. Also by getting players/coaches on to give us the true story, not just newspaper speculation. I do like the whole idea of having a Phoenix player or coach as a guest interviewee each week, or even an All White overseas.

In a slow football week, the pod interviews Phoenix General Manager David Dome to talk recruitment, preseason and away trips. Elsewhere, Kiwis are back in action in overseas' leagues and Sky counters Coliseum. While in local football action, Miramar Rangers have one hand on the Central League title and Wellington United are looking likely for a triple relegation.

Guess it was too soon for smithy asking coliseum questions tonight to be on this one?

Didn't get a chance to ask Tim any questions for the poddy last night, but he's really keen to be talked to on next weeks podcast, just before the start of the Premier League by the sounds of it.

RE: NYL & State Leagues. I am pretty sure most of the kids play both, maybe not all in their State League teams top sides. CCM has their academy in the top tier of the NSW NPL. Also in the review of the State Leagues for the introduction NPL, they wanted the NYL teams included so players could be playing year round to help their development.

The Pod talked briefly about our defense which I agree is a real issue. My prediction from hearing people's early views on this new young left back is that after a few games Ernie will bench him. As there is no other suitable cover, he will end up playing 3,4,3, with a combination of Boxall, duranteand sigie at the bank, with wing backs of Fenton and bertos. Sound familiar?

he may play 3-5-2 but can't see a 3-4-3. We need the midfielders if we are going to play with no FBs and Carlos lack of defensive work rate in the middle demands at least another DM along side Manny

I think a few guys on the pod have given Caira a bit more grief than he's worth.

Not sure if they were at the petone game, but he was pretty good there. Always hard to see a fullback's performance when you are sitting on the other side of the pitch

Sorry to be pedantic but you only cross one sea to get here from most parts of Australia so therefore we come here from oversea. If you fly/sail/paddle/swim from northern parts of Australia to NZ you will cross an ocean and maybe a small portion of a sea

Most of the comments are related to his other two games rather than petone.  I don't remeber him making as big a mark as Hudson-Wihongi did in the first half.

Yeah I guess my point is, I was on other side of pitch - Hudson didn't impress me at all in that half but obviously everyone else saw a lot of good so I put that down to being on the other side of the field.
Exact reverse for most of your opinions on Caira imo. He wasn't on your side but from my end was looking decent. Rounded the keeper once, and got inside the box a few times.
Different sort of player to what we have had in past - doesn't seem to be as much of a crosser, rather a more direct short passes to get in behind the backline. If this is what Ernie wants then in my opinion he is the best candidate for it as guys like Rowe and Lochhead are very much fullbacks who like to cross the ball in. I can see Fenton and Caira both being directed to zip in behind like they did on occasion against Petone.

I guess my point is that a few members of the pod are already saying he's not up to pace after he had a poor outing against Fa'arodo who to be fair would probably cause other A-League sides issues

Sounds like you didn't see him actually do any defending.

Nobody in the pod questioned his attacking creds. But then, he's a left back isn't he...

Wingers from Miramar and Lower Hutt tore him up. I guess Ernie is confident that wingers from Sydney and Malbin won't do the same.

Incredible stamina. No shame. Yellow Fever.

Yeah against Petone there was rarely any attacks against Caira & Fenton in that second half against Petone but that's not to say they weren't able to get back quick and cover well.

Not sure if "torn up" is how I would put the Miramar game, seemed to have a quiet half after those mistakes - didn't see the Lower Hutt one so can't comment although the whole team performed bad that game apparently - soemthing to do with playing fatigued?

I guess I'm saying that Ernie said from the start that he wanted his fullbacks to be closer to wingers - get up and down that flank a lot and provide a lot of attack. Both Louis & Reece have the raw abilities to do that, but we don't know how either of them will get on against A-League opposition. I am worried teams like Victory are going to rip us up.

It comes down to who would suit Ernie's style better - Locchead is probably a better overall fullback & Rowe has a wicked delivery but both aren't as direct and attacking as I think he wants. Ironically I reckon Hogg would have been very suited to Ernie's style but he isn't around now.

Before Ernie's appointment I would have kept Locchead & Rowe - they were my faves, never rated Hoggy's defence.

But if it  comes down to the fact that Ernie wants attacking fullbacks then I have to trust him and Caira + Fenton both have those clear attacking tendencies and pace to go with it.

This is also what I'm saying.

They make me nervous defensively. If we can retain possession, they should both be pretty good going forwards. But...the Phoenix retaining possession for long periods of a game would be a novelty...so I'm nervous.

Yeah exactly. It's quite a worry in that respect. From what i have taken from Ernie's comments, he says he wants 1 fullback pushing forward with the other staying back. Obviously suicide if both are caught further forward. You would then hope a DM can cover the vacnt spot if not completely drop in between the back 2.

#?InTheZone? V73 is out at www.yellowfever.co.nz/podcasts.

This week on In The Zone, New Zealand Football comes to the rescue as the Wellington Phoenix FC find a new opponent for their preseason fixture in Rotorua, while Cameron Lindsay looks to be heading out the door. In other All Whites news, tickets to the World Cup Qualifier are flying out the door, but will it last? Locally, Wellington United are home to the double down, and the Central League title contenders face off this weekend.
