Well the last game of the night, a goal down both ends within minutes, but hoping a draw and we get at least a point or 3 against tards

OK Heart won, so we need some pointsArd Righ2011-12-18 01:59:46

Have we ever been 12 matches into a season with a better goal difference Piney?

That actually looks like a potential end of season top six / bottom four split to me.

Yeah, it was +2 after 12 games in 2009/10.  The 6-0 in round 11 that season helped!

Was just thinking that, although I think 3rd - 6th could still be anyones. Also wouldn't write off Newcastle

Strong defence should be the difference between 6th and 7th.

Adelaide have a new coach, so it's anyones guess.  Personally would prefer to see Sydney, Melbournes OUT!

Plus the other sh*tter is we've played one more game than the other teams (excluding Roar)

We have a chance of picking up a nice bundle of points over the holiday season. The next 5 games include home against Newcastle, Sydney and Perth.....we should be able to beat them all at home. We are also away against Adelaide and Gold Coast.....which are the two weakest teams in the comp.
All up we could/should be looking at 11 to 14 points out of these games...if we are good enough.
10+ points will have us firmly in the top 6 by the end of January.

In reality there are only two real outstanding teams in the comp....Mariners and the Roar with Broich and Henrieke and co back on board. The rest of the teams are beatable if we play to our full potential.

I always thought that by Xmas we could judge the Nix 11/12 fairly. Well, if we can get our best 11 on the field regularly(Ifill especially) then we can go into the new year with a degree of optimism(can we do optimism?????)

I reckon you will find Adelaide and the Gold Coast a bit harder than you think.Leggy2011-12-22 11:55:08

If I remember rightly are late-season surge in 09/10 was largely built upon a few decent away wins over the Christmas/New Year period. Hopefully we can do the same this year.

I think this is the key phrase of your statement. In all 11 games, We have rarely put out a first choice 11. Without looking it up, would it be fair to say we have been the most unsettled side in terms of injury/player availability?

I think had we had a best 11 on the pitch, our standing might be a little higher. Also in saying that, I doubt Meow would have lost 4 on the trot with Broich out... Difficult to know but so far the first half of the season its been a case of 'what might have been'. Objectively most people were slagging the squad off before the season started and i think where we are sitting when you look at what we have been through, is not too bad.

We've done really well given the circumstances we found ourselves in not so long ago. Everyone expected us and Gold Coast to be left behind, but we're sitting alright heading into Christmas.

Just have to get some more results on the road now - we haven't played badly.

Thanks for the update. With the Heart leading the Victory 2-1, they could go 2nd. If CCM win in Perth that will keep us 5 points ahead. Just what we need for the up coming game against them.
Proud to have attended the first 175 Consecutive "Home" Wellington Phoenix "A League" Games !!

Sydney and Glory would be on 13 games also, if the first mid week game wasn't postponed. Ryan's Rovers2011-12-24 08:55:54

What I do like, is that if you take away our extra game we're in the same spot on the table, and that we won our extra game against the league leaders (at the time).

Yep, even with the match in hand the bottom 4 can't catch us. The +3 goal differnce is handy for us too.

Certainly not being negative, but you can't really say a lot about any of the teams, as we are not even half way through the season. It only takes 2/3 wins on the trot for any of them(and us) and things would look quite different.
