Gutted. Very sad and I don't really understand the reasoning behind this. Was he unhappy here? Does he really see the club in such a negative light from a skill level perspective? Or is there something going on behind the scenes we don't know about? I'm hoping it is just his personal view and nothing more widespread.
As a career move going to Melbourne seems quite risky. Hes still young so even if he fails it won't be the end of the world, but I can see his career stalling. Not being assured a start, the manager who signed him is under a leadership cloud, different style of football, and its just a new scene to get used to in a bigger city. A lot of things could go wrong. I'm struggling to see how he expects things to go better on a personal level than they did this year. He should've been trying to make sure what he managed could be maintained accross an entire season while improving his weaknesses and gaining a bit of strength. If he achieved that he would be in a very solid position careerwise. Instead he seems dead keen for a positional switch which I just don't see happenening at Melbourne. He has the skill and the vision to play central but he will not get anywhere near as much time and room in close. He will need to use his body much better and be more aggressive in winning those 50/50s. If Carlos is set free, Melbourne will most likely splash out on another marquee player to fill that role. I don't see them having enough blind faith in him to plan for him holding that position for the season. Unless they change to a 442 but then he will be playing on the wing again. At the moment the most likely way I see him being used is as an impact sub.
As a player I would have thought you would want to avoid a reputation for a lack of loyalty. Not sure if this will matter or not but as a european manager looking to take a risk on on a young player from the a-league, character would be quite important.
From a Phoenix point of view it is a huge loss. He was vital to the formlift in the second half of the season. Not saying he is irreplaceable but it is not going to be easy. I was just looking forward to a few less than impressive signings running out to free up some money.
oh well, at least the first home game against them is going to be fun.
