Anyone got pax? Fever Zone is filling in a bit already. Looks like the section on half way is selling well too.
We are looking at doing some kind of scaled down pub crawl. Doesn't look like it will be a full 12 pubs because the weather will be dubious, lots will have their own game to do too, and it's an early kick off.

No Pax with Ticketek either - and possibly not able to access ticker until 48hrs before the game.

Should be a ripper though.

this may be a bad idea and possibly knocked back quickly, but maybe we dont boo Rudan when he comes onto the field, given he was so keen to come to NZ as soon as the bubble was opened, he kinda deserves a clap especially after Perth were like "hell no we wont go"

I think so, mate. Put aside the rivalry for 5 mins before the game, and thank them for their part in bringing a game back home (which is the 1 thing all of us desperately wanted). Just a polite golf clap or something.

Then normal business can resume once the game kicks off.

Very promising considering the tickets have only been on sale to the general public for 6 hours. The club has two weeks to really make this a blockbuster and push this around the city. Does anyone know if they will be getting boots on the ground like they used to in order to promote the game ie marketing it outside the train station etc

good reminder for me to get tix tonight. Going to be a family outing, meaning I'll only be able to watch about 90 seconds of football...going to take my 1.5 year old who calls anything remotely round (including the moon, the sun and any street light) "ball" and who was kicking an avocado pit around the other day...
can't wait!

I booked twelve tickets this morning for the extended whanau and friends. I'm taking my two daughters to their first live sporting event. Thankfully the Phoenix wear the same colours as Emma Wiggle so it was an easy sell. Not sure how the mother in law, who insists on wearing high heels to every event will hold up though?

No, he's a snake.

Debate for another day perhaps. And yes whole sordid Mel M saga, does show Rudan is an unhinged weirdo.

But from a Nix perspective, he turned around the Nix when it was in a bad way, got them to finals, had the crowds back, bought some good signings to the club who are still there, and recommended Talay as his successor - which has worked out great.

Then he took with him an aged captain (who may have been a bad dressing room influence??) in Dura, and a keeper in Kurto who is really no better than Sail or Marinovic (freed up a visa spot). Burgess was definitely a loss, but no gtee he would have stayed in Wgtn long term anyway. Certainly David Dome in interviews has dismissed any real club anger at Rudan. Yet he's happy to vent a bit towards Gallop & FFA. Get feeling that with hindsight Nix consider Rudan was the right man at the right time, but likely happy he's gone!

Normally, yes - but in this case - no, I would not boo him.
When visiting Wellington for their 22 May game Rudan (and the team) will be representing their club, not just themselves. And I would be the first to applaud the club (WU) for coming across, to be the first team to do so since the pandemic.
By coming across to Wgtn they are helping Welnix with the gate takings and the club promotion, in a financially difficult season.   I would welcome them just the same way I would welcome any other team making the trip across to play in NZ right now - no different than how our tourism operators are happy to see the Aussies coming here for the snow season. We're all in this together, let's take a broader view just once.

All of that would be worth applauding IF Rudan and Western had any say in whether they came to NZ or not. But they don't, so meaningless platitudes from a sharkstain aren't worth anything more than a Mark Rudan promise.

He'll get plenty of boos and he'll deserve every single one of them.

Are we all forgetting he walked out on the club, waged a PR campaign to make him look good, and was actively recruiting for his new club while still employed at the Phoenix? I'm not going to gloss over that simply because he is turning up to a game that the league has scheduled. He will get my boos forever.

Perth and Tony P proved that the clubs have little to no say in whether they come over to NZ or not. Tony P was open in the media that Perth did not want to come over, but are coming over here anyway.

So I don't know where this idea that Rudan wanted to bring the team over came from - he literally had very little to do with whether his team turns up to the scheduled location of a match.

Imma boo him and his team of snakes in exactly the way they deserve.

He turned around the mentality and got the club into the finals for the first time since 2014/15, I get that it’s fun to have a villain but I don’t really dislike him that much, and of the players that left, didn’t Talay say only Krishna would’ve been re-signed. Durante, Kurto and Burgess all were rather indifferent and replaced by better players, and as for the terminating of the contract to leave to another club, he activated a clause that was available to both parties and is something we see all the time in the A League. In the last week or so McDonald, Georgievski and Flottmann have all terminated to go to another A League club.

They did have a say. They said "Yes, we would like to come to Wellington and give the Phoenix fans a home game." This made arranging the game easier.

Perth also had a say. They said "No, we would not like to travel to Wellington or Auckland to give the Phoenix fans a home game. We want the game to be in Wollongong" This made arranging the game more difficult, and presumably required the League to step in and convince them that they had to.

Thank you, Western United. For supporting the Phoenix in their mission to have a home game in New Zealand.

FFS, no one's asking you all to make a personalized photo gallery and stick it on a USB stick for him. Just thank that club, and only boo Rudan for 119 out of 120 minutes.

I'm amused at how much you think the opposition has a say on where and when a game is played. The number of Sunday evening game we use to get highlights that.
Rudan saying he'd like to come here is just a PR strategy. It's pretty obvious from a football perspective that he'd rather play in front of a few thousand in NSW, rather than 10k+ in Wellington. Given how many state border closures there has been, there is absolutely no more coivd risk from travelling to New Zealand. He know the league wouldn't stop us hosting games so he went along with the popular opinion. Just look at how much Tony P was roundly panned for his position.

my point is that Rudan, (love him or hate him) has been very vocal on his support of the nix during Covid and how much the league owes us for moving to aus. Perth have been the opposite and very vocla about not wanting to travel despite our efforts.
all it takes is no boos when he walks on, a bit of appreciation for the support, and then normality can resume.
its not about forgiving or forgetting, just appreciating his vocal support of our cause.

Please show me this 'vocal support', because I genuinely haven't seen it anywhere beyond his comments about being willing to come to Wellington when he was asked. Perhaps there is more to this that I haven't seen.

Are we also ALL forgetting that both clubs will be walking onto the pitch at the same time?? I just hope we make the biggest noise when our team gets out of the tunnel. To be that's what it's all about.
I have my own opinion of Rudes, yes he was really good - and really terrible, but I honestly don't give a damn. I want to cheer on a team I haven't seen playing live for over a year - and show my kids what a great day a Nix outing can be!

You think he's saying that because he means it, or because the optics of saying otherwise are bad? Based on his track record, I don't believe him even a tiny little bit. His support for a game in Wellington means literally nothing.

of course he means it! He could have easily done what Pignata did with Perth and said "Nah, we'd rather play at the gong than travel to NZ" instead, he is quite direct and states that we deserve one or two games at home, the fans deserve it etc.

It's not beyond realms of simple logic, that Rudan creepy weirdo that he is, has a soft spot for the Nix. They gave him his first A League coaching gig after all, and was a season that had plenty of highs, if ended very flat.

But yeah for sure likewise, he knows his departure upset many in Wgtn, so some platitudes about Nix & it's fans at least part PR exercise. Have no doubt when one day he leaves Western, it's going to be messy as well.

Just like he meant it when he said "when you get me, you get me 100%"?

Even if he does mean it, it still doesn't affect anything and certainly isn't worth applause - its the bare minimum you'd expect from a reasonable human being (which, to be fair, is more than you'd expect from Rudan)

context is key for me. As soon as the bubble opened and it was looking likely that the WU and Glory games were coming to NZ he was positive and encouraging for them to go ahead. In his statements he has said we as fans deserve as much. Yes, he knows we hate him, but I think he loves that, he knows a rivalry is good for the league. He also knows that we as fans are good for the league and wants to help get us a home game. Perth not so much, and we loved Tony P, yet he's all nah travelling is too hard.
