The jury is still undecided on whether I'm happyu about this or not. He's had one stellar season and one crap one. So now he has the chance to turn it around and with the players he's kept this year and whoever he brings in during the off season. Hopefully he can rise to the challenge of winning the home derby games - Dome seems very clear on that as minimum. Time will tell.
Wrong for the club and Chief to direct all their focus on the Derby games, thats as bad as setting a target to make the 6. What so if they dont win the Derbies does that mean the season is a failure. Dont get me wrong i want to win them as much as others but 2 home Derby games wont define our season.
Yeah, I agree. Ultimately though that wioll require Cheif to abandon the desire to play with felxible players - he wanted players who could play in multiple positions this season - and whilst Piper and LKH have looked capable in multiple positions I hope next season they get the chance to own one and develop.' Piper was best on the wing, LKH is a CB.
Piper I’m kind of okay with. He does 4-5 things and we want him in position to do those…
Hughes…we’ll probably need him at the back, but definitely has the skills to play higher up.
If the rumours about Griff above are true, why is Chief falling out with so many people? Can this be sorted out because if we’re taking Chief because of previous success, that was equally the success of a brilliantly parsimonious side. Which surely means good defensive coaching.
Sort your sharke out Chief, behind closed doors if possible, buy some new shirts and win us something.
Piper isn't a good fit on the wing. Has no guile. His touch and forward passing are pretty terrible for an A-League forward and there is little prospect of that dramatically improving at such a late stage of his football development. Any time he found himself in the middle of an attacking move he invariably ruins it with a poor touch or pass, but he is a great finisher. I think he could be a good centre back or even number 9, could also be a half decent fullback but would never be as good as say Payne is in that position.
However, if we’ve hired Chief on the basis of season one, that work can’t be separated from Griff’s.
You’re saying Chief’s got the talking stick, let him rip? This season certainly smacked of not having or not listening to assistants or any advice. Chief needs to get the team around him right too. Head coach should never feel it’s him against the world.

Slow down. Can Pierre even name the Nix 'defensive coach'? Looks a bit of baseless post to me by someone who clearly is not a fan of Italiano.

Yeah where TF is Pierre getting this from lol. Chief specifically said he reads plenty of crap online, this'll be some of that crap. If Chief had fallen out with as many of the people I've seen mentioned here there is no way he'd be signed on again. One falling out can be a misunderstanding but several happening and you won't be hired again
If YoungHeartHM said this id listen. Who TF is Pierre 🤣
So we have falling out with Ball, Rojas and the defensive coach? This reminds me of that saying if you meet one asshole it might be them, if everyone you meet is an asshole, it might be you.

pretty sure I saw Rufer, Payne and Barba as well over this year. Why don't you add a name to the pile too? 🤣 I mean honestly.
If the majority of these had any basis at all there is no way he'd be signed again. It would all come out in any review process

it's more exciting to speculate on the worst though. How boring is it if they just went separate ways for normal reasons.
oh yup but players are often never consulted. There is often a divide between management, coaches and players for good reason. Sometimes players have no idea what is best for them.
Also, it's pretty clear if chiefy was going round being an asshole to all the players then the staff would see this and it would be brought up. Its not like because the players aren't involved they don't talk about the players during a coaching review
Chiefy and Greenacre don't talk either so the list of people he has fallen out with is growing... How can you not talk to your Reserve Team Coach?
Expect another average to poor season next season with another super low xG. I for one will not be attending any games until that number increases dramatically - at least AFC create a lot of chances and play exciting football!

Why would they talk? Except for maybe who to keep an eye out for from the academy team I doubt Greeny has any influence over the senior teams.
FFS sick of people just throwing out unconfirmed rumors about who has fallen out with who. Pretty sure if it was as toxic as some on here are suggesting there is no way a smart guy like Rob would have had anything to do with reappointing him. Players may not have been consulted but if there were major concerns for them would doubt if they would have sat back and said nothing while things were being discussed. Also gotta laugh at people already writing off the new season before anything has been announced about possible signings. Im sure there are seats on the Auckland Bling wagon for those wanting to jump aboard.
Here is last season (23/24) for reference: image.png213.08 KB Still last!
xG is a great stat that everyone should consider. You can't just consider it on its own.
Here's another cherry picked stat - Chief has the best winning percentage and best league finish of any coach ever for the Nix. No wonder he has been re signed.

There is also big chance stat - so 20 shots at 0.05xg per shot might not include any big chances - whereas 5 shots with 2 big chances might reflect more on goals scored
xG and xGA stats for those who are interested: image.png224.01 KB We have the lowest xG and the highest xGA and the coach gets re-signed!
Kosta has been over-achieving for two seasons otherwise our league positions would have been even worse.
Expect more of the same for 25/26 and if Kosta under-achieves or gets injured we are in big trouble.
Ironically pretty similar stats to last year. We just managed to some how be successful despite this so everone willfully ignored the warning signs or just claims that xg is useless which is a nonsense claim.
Teams that regularly win have high xg and low xga, this is true in almost every season of every league in the world.

In fairness, I had heard similar ructions within the playing camp earlier in the season, but that all seemed to be down to frustration with results and overall performance.
Understandable to be fair, and all seemingly above board. I get sharkty when things go awry at work, and even then it only takes 12-18 hours to fix. A week is a long time to dwell in between a poor performance and getting a chance to go out and rectify it the following weekend, so that kind of stuff coming to a head doesn't really surprise me in all honesty.

If the stats have been consistently wrong for two years why would you trust them more than the coach consistently beating them? If the players are playing badly how will we win? Is that your question?
And sorry got sucked in by Pierre. But the fact someone is prepared to post that either suggests there’s definitely some discontent whether it’s fans or camp - it takes a bit of effort, how ever minimal to post crap.

Ahh- AFC mentioned out of nowhere in a Nix discussion by a poster with the credibility of one post. I knew this M.O. was familiar.
OK, those that don't like xG stats - here are the shots stats:
image.png44.49 KB 8.62 per 90 is pretty bad and we are very far behind the the top teams and even the teams below us on the table. The football he is dishing up is terrible - the stats don't lie!
At a time when we are at an all-time-low, why are we re-hiring our coach?
We needed a fresh start, fresh ideas, fresh inspiration. Something to look forward to. We are getting none of that.
It also sends a bad message - that we are willing to re-sign a coach when the team has performed terribly, and been humiliated by our local rivals which only just entered the competition.
People are not showing up to matches anymore. There's no excitement around the club.
I will obviously still be supporting this club, I'm not a 'bandwagoner'. But this is probably the most deflated I've been about the Nix since the end of the Ricki Herbert era.
I hope I'm wrong, and things improve from here. Like others have said, we can be negative/frustrated at times, but it's because we care about this club, we invest a lot of our time into it, and we want to see it succeed. For people at the club to say that there's 'a lot of crap posted online', might be true to an extent, but at the same time I think a lot of the criticism is warranted. And again, we speak our thoughts because we care about the club.
The last thing the club needs is to alienate it's core fans (let alone the fringe fans that have been turned off this season by the really poor quality of football).

Don’t think anyone has been happy with this season particularly. However, last season we were top of the table for 15 weeks. Over half the season. With half AFC’s budget. Certainly didn’t have Danny Hay as a video analyst or whatever his job is, from head All Whites coach.
That said as well, we’ve had plenty of seasons where we’ve scored a bunch and conceded more.
And I remember going back to Ernie wanting us to shoot from 6 yards out.
There’s so much aimless shooting in the A league. Taking a low percentage shot poorly isn’t taking responsibility.
There’s a reason it’s dire football this season- we’ve been losing. There’s plenty of football fans enjoy good defense and Pennington, Al-Taay and Rufer thwarted so many attacks. People seemed to like Paulsen.
I don’t think there’s any point telling us what we watched, whoever you are. We know what we watched. We’ve spent the season gnashing our teeth and rolling our eyes.
Last season for over half the season we were top of the table. We were the dominant team in the competition. One more piece of luck or skill and we were the Premiers.
Last season Adelaide topped the scoring charts from 8th on the table.
There are currently 6 teams ahead of Auckland FC on the goals scored metric. Equally Vic are 3rd on the 9th place for goals scored.
Thanks for telling us we’re losing football games. We know that.
We’ve had high scoring entertainers too. Plenty of them. Smeltz, Ifill, Burns, Krishna, Davila, Singh, Hemed…they didn’t bring us to within 45 seconds of our first trophy.
I think you’re describing a part of the problem and missing a chat that’s been going on for five or six months.
It hasn’t been the stats, but some of the curious decisions around the squad and the slow pace of the reaction to injuries that’s been the major bug bear, imo. Rojas, Cola, Ball, Al-Taay and Van Hattum’s spots could have been used better. And quite possibly Josh’s. Rufer being out and Conchie not quite being trusted indicates another wasted spot, if we’re not mucking around.
OK, those that don't like xG stats - here are the shots stats:

What I'm seeing with all these stats is Corica constantly having Auckland outside the top 6. For a team with their budget this must be really disappointing and perhaps they need to look at bringing in a new manager?
Or perhaps cherry picking stats that have us in dead last does not tell the full story. Even just looking at the other stats there, we have fewer shots, but we're pretty deadly with those shots, particularly if they are on target, having one of the higher conversion rates (and highest if the shot is on target).
Having low shots is not a good thing, but so long as you're clinical it's not terrible. Perth is a perfect example of that statistic being worrying. Low on the number of shots with one of the worst conversion rates. If we had Perth's number of shots we'd being scoring more than City. Perth meanwhile need like 500 shots to match City.
If we are discounting XG and shots on goal during her season, can we please also stop this bull shark about double the Nix’s budget!!!
It’s bull shark with no credible source at all apart from someone trying to justify how crap they really are.
I’m sure Kosta, Rojas, Rufer and Payne were here for the experience. Those four probably earn the equivalent of the top four AFC kiwis.
The imports of AFC, no one had ever heard about apart from Sakai. That guy is 35 years old and actually was here for the lifestyle and experience.
TAB odds were 8-1 for the Nix and 15-1 for AFC to win the comp. No one saw this squad topping the league.
At least the shots per season stats are correct.
Next some jock, will start talking about population sizes when justifying attendances. Now if you want to look at that, AFC would have more then 100k walk through the gate then the Nix. Let’s say a ticket is 30 bucks. Very conservatively they have banked more than 3 million bucks more then the Nix. Actually it will end up being a shark load more than that.
Time to stop comparing your inefficiencies to others and instead asking how can we actually shoot the ball more.
