Depends on the wages paid.
If you have $40 and are allowed to sign 10 players. Simple maths dictates that you can pay an average of $4. If you pay 9 players $4 and your marquee player $5, you are only marginally over the cap ($41). Release a $4 player and you have $3 to sign your 10th and stay under the cap.

It also depends on the rules regarding marquee players.

Marquee player designation does not automatically mean "Salary equivalent to budget of a small 3rd world country" just means they have gone over the cap to sign him. could be $1 could be $1mil.DrQuack322007-11-07 16:39:32

Tambouras would be a good signing, but can he play on the right?

Sigmund would be a good signing. I know everyones talking about 3 clubs in a calender year or whatever, but the FFA are desperate to see an NZ team succeed. They were ashamed of the somewhat humorous joke the Knights were (and let Gordon slip under the radar), so I think Sigmund is a possibility.

Know idea what position Simon Elliot plays, but as far as I'm concerned he is not up to Premier League standard due to ongoing injuries. However, if there was a reasonable chance of him shaking off his injury before the seasons end then I don't see why he couldn't be brought under consideration.

You've got no idea what position he plays, but you know he's not up to Premier League standard... please tell me you are taking the piss.

He's on his way back from surgery, and on Premier League wages.  He ain't coming this year.

With all due respect to Simon Ellitt, he is obvious a good footballer and must have some class to play EPL. He has also been injured for a very long time. The only tie is Elrich (ex Fulham?) and coming home. Maybe next season?

Theres no doubting Elliot's quality, but do we really need another centre mid?

this is an exciting time. Knowing that we'll add two more players to our valuable team makes me really hope for the best...can't wait for Tony to let us know what's going to happen!

No more midfeilders. One more defender and then a striker or a defender.

I know what you are saying but my guess is that Elrich would be on decent wedge because he was coming from the prem league plus he was in demand.  Problem as well is that where are we going to get a decent defender at this time of year?  They'd have to be off contract wouldn't they because of the European transfer window?

The problem with many of the NZFC options is that they would have to be iwlling tto walk out on an NZFC job, and probably a full time job alongside that for a deal that may only be two months.

I just can't see that appealing to many of them (the likes of Bazeley and Emblen come to mind).

Sorry 'Ard News, but Bazeley went to pot halfway through the season, unlike Emblem who just got better & better, certainly under Rikki H. I think he would certainly fiit in well with the current squad.

I thought Emblem was in line for Nix contract at the start of the season, after his performances the end of last. Certainly a class above Ross.

I can't see any point in trying to sign him now (eve if he would come for 2 months) we are overloaded  with midfielder's already.

Fair point about Bazeley, he was never that good at the height of his powers in England anyway.

Nick ward would be an amazing signing. he was so good in version 1 of the a-league, left after that then everyone forgot about him, didnt he win the a-league young player of the year award or something in version 1? I guess we do have enough midfielders, but when aloisi retires and brown takes over the captaincy Nicky ward would be a perfect player to have.

Yeah not really the position we should be looking at acquiring. He's at QPR I think.

At first I thought oh f**k, but then again i suggested Bazeley, so fair play to Rikki  he's a much better short term option.

what's Pistone like? i mean he's an Italian defender so that's a big tick in my book

He can play at either right or left back.

Anyone whose made over 100 appeareances for Everton must be decent.

I've seen Pistone play in Italy since I was a kid, until he emigrated to the UK (or Scotland), and he's a good defender. He's more quantity than quality but hell he's got balls of steel! Plus he speaks my same language so we can get to be bestest friends ever :D ahahaah

The only thing I'm really bothered by is that I have to leave NZ in less than two weeks, so I probably won't be able to see him in action :(

By the way we can make great chants with Pistone..which in Italian means Piston (like in a car's engine)..or I could make some chants in Italian, some easy ones to sing...

Whatever else he is like it seems he scores with the ladies, according to this

All the women within the walls of Goodison were in floods of tears today as Moyesy announced that Sandro Pistone's contract would not be renewed this Summer. The Blues defender whose Goodison career was blighted by injury since his arrival back in 2000 made over 100 appearances for the Blues in a stop start career. (14/05/2007)

by the way, some of you might remember the chant which the West Ham fans dedicated to Paolo di Canio, which basically was just singing his name to the tune of 'La donna e' mobile' (an aria off some opera) and we could do the same:

' sandro pistoneee
 sandro pistoneeee
 sandro pistoneeee
 sandro pistoneee '

you're right mate, but think about it. If there's a leak of that sort, maybe there are high chances that he might actually turn up. Plus, and that's a big bonus, he speaks fluent english since he's been at Everton for a few season. That makes a big difference, especially for Italians - and particularly for football players who have the education of a 3rd grader.....

so I wanna keep my hopes up this time!!!

Look at the others rumours around the Phoenix, they came right, it must be odds on. We've made room, they must have had something in the (Phoenix) wings

he's better at left back than right, yes he can play right back,  but then again so can Jeremy Christie, he'd sure be a hit with the ladies though and is a decent enough defender

and i would be happy if we signed him

Good  on set pieces though (very strong in the air).

Have to say i've only seen him on tv, never in the flesh, so he may do a lot of off the ball work?
