agree with what someone said earlier - either ferrante or diego must be brought into CM so the ball can actually be played through the midlle not booted over the top.

nix looked bloody good when players (bertos/hearfield) ran at the defence. not so great when mckain kept kicken it to the noocastle defence

Disappointing result but bloody hell what a reaction.  Defending was disappointing but really out of character imo.  I have a lot of faith in this team and in Ricki.  I can't say the starting line up was anything I would have disagreed with for an away game but it did seem that tonight there was a gaping hole between the front two and central midfield.  Greenacre looks like a very solid acquisition and while the goal was soft, you have to be in the right place and unlike times last year with the team, he took the shot.  Leo played with confidence, Ifill needs game time.  The good thing with this squad is there are alternatives and there is depth.  The defence will be better and with a change in midfield to a more attack minded player like Diego we should see a more positive result on Sunday 16th.  Don't forget that we were much stronger at home last year, results against Melbourne and Sydney when they were top shows what we are capable of.  The players made the ROF a difficult place for Austalian teams to play, make sure we are all there next Sun day to do our bit too.

May I ask what your faith in Ricki is based on?

Over the past two seasons, can you honestly say that when the team has won, they have done that because of Ricki, rather than inspite of him?Ultra Roma2009-08-09 21:22:57

Yup easy to say sack Ricki but I have never heard anyone (admittedly I don't read here all the time nor every thread) suggest a better replacement.

Lets sack Graham Henry too, but who do you replace him with. See what I mean?

I think if I were to blame him for the losses, I would give him credit for the wins.  I also give him credit for putting this squad together.  Having met him last weekend, he is clearly a very genuine guy.  If I  were a pro footballer and was speaking to him about my potential future in Wellington I would have a lot of faith in him and what he and the club are trying to achieve.  There have been very positive comments about the set up here by the new players who have arrived and the quality of the club structure.  Ricki surely has to be given a lot of credit for that.  In terms of tactics, I like a team that uses wingers and encourages LB and RB to get forward and I think in Greenacre and Ifill Ricki has identified two players who will do a great job for us.  So yes I honestly can say Ricki has contributed to the success of the team.

Newcastle possessed two players with 'x' factor - Milesevic, whilst basic, drove the Jets on and laid on a wonderful opportunity for Hoffman to complete a hat-trick. Fabio Vignaroli looked a quality player in the Jets midfield.

Young Hoffman was clinical with his two first-half finishes but we saw the other side of him when he sliced another well wide and then spurned a hat-trick chance from Milesevic's cross.

The rest of the Newcastle Jets performance didn't look that special overall and I still believe the WP were worth a point.

The defending at the Sigmund goal was terrible and the goalkeeping error by Ben Kennedy was obviously a gift. The Jets get three points but have a lot of improvement before they can talk about challenging for A-League honours.

This is a team that made the last 16 of the AFC Champions League?

The substitutions played a decisive role in the outcome with Daniel and Diego both disappointing. Ricki's substitutions didn't pan out at all well.

Newcastle's returned big time with the youngster Jason Naidovski scoring the winner and Rooney's direct running and physicality offset with that impressive cross for the winner.

A concern for New Zealand with only Bertos looking quality. Lochhead was absolutely average and for all his physiological and athletic prowess simply doesn't seem to have a football mind to do it justice.

Sigmund was ok but I was curious to note that he often fired off clearances all over the place at moments when it seemed to me he had more time to apply some thought to his actions.

I wonder if he is 100% confident in his fitness? He cleared his lines when necessary but when he is chased down by an opponent it seems anywhere will do.

It is only the first match of the season so no need to press a panic button but its fairly clear there are some issues with that performance.Mikhailichenko2009-08-09 21:32:09

I liked his left foot volley around the defender (2nd half), it went wide but heck - he wasn't going to die wondering.

I feel that he's kept his job through good will rather than good performances.
Remember how last season how he said we would definitely make the playoffs, and to judge him at the end of the season?

If this was England, Ricki would be in the dole queue.

And are you really suggesting there are no other suitable managers in the world?Ultra Roma2009-08-09 21:36:38

On a personal note, Ben Kennedy gives me hope that I still have a potential career in professional football. Outside of a club shop that is.

Enjoyed the game, we showed promise, midfield lacked nouse and the links were only provided from the wings...defence horribly exposed...all in all not so bad, there are may positives and still work to do. bring on the glory!!

I think we're all pretty disappointed, but maybe we only have ourselves to blame for that.

It is a massive ask to go from a lowly team to a top team with only the few personnel changes that we've had.  Look at today's starting line up and it's pretty much the same as last year's but without Smeltz.

So why should we expect to be much better?  Manage your own expectations, that is the key to being a Phoenix fan.

By the way, Ricki is a vastly superior coach to Branko Cullina.  And I say that having worked with both of them.

Many positives? Like what? Apart from the flanks we looked like utter shit.

There is a seed of truth to what has been said about the coach working in the current environment where the pressure is lessened, in a sense. But isn't that a good thing?

There is no sense in adopting old school attitudes to the WP job and apeing the FA Premiership habit of firing coaches left, right and centre based on two years of results.

I do, however, believe that some of the players, particularly the New Zealand players, are leading fortunate lives and suspect that they enjoy rather more shelf-life than the typical professional based upon their nationality and therefore relevance to the New Zealand identity of the club and importance for the World Cup Play-Off later this year.

At the time Ricki was appointed to the job there were many who raised question marks over this very idea - players with the international side and game time/contracts with the WP.

It will be interesting to see what happens closer to the OFC/AFC play-off and to gauge how the WP are performing in the A-League and so on. Jeremy Christie was released, too, so we shall see.

Name dropping putz

It was the Nix of old alas, with worse defense! We got schooled down the wings (how good was Song?) and all we reverted to was long balls. The amount of times our play was down the wings and not cutting in. Did we score from the wings? Nope, one of the rear opportunities where we used the middle third and whaddya know, Greenacre scores. Give the lads some passing practice or maybe make them play Futsal all week, because at present they're not quite there.

That said I like the look of Ify and Greenacker, Ify's not quite there yet and ole 'acker just needs some more time playing with the lads.

MOTM:Bertos. Siggy would have claimed it but he was apart of some shooking defending and 1 goal doesn't make up for 3.

I think you underestimate the contributions of Elrich and Song. Apart from one ropey shot Elrich looked very dangerous, especially in combination with Song. Atrocious defending not withstanding the first two goals were made by good lead-up work by these two.

I also don't think that Lochhead was that bad. Perhaps on the third goal he could have covered Naidovski but really that was Durante's job.

Culina did very well in the old NSL. He's won trophies in professional leagues. Ricki hasn't. Today the Jetz were no better than us, but their tactics were far superior.  The coach calls the tactics. Yes, Culina was dumped by Sydney Fc, but the fact he was picked up by another club shows that he must be doing something right! I doubt Ricki would get picked up by anotheA-league club because in reality he has achieved f**k all
