Can't wait for the game.
Lots of talk in press about us over the past week, great articles in the Dom this morning, although looks like someone was lviing out their Battle of Britan fantasies  with the cover photo (hope you didn't think of that one Fred).

Even  Doug Go Lightly was talking us up on the Radio this afternoon.

Does anyone know, definitively, what strip we will be playing in?

I need to pack accordingly for my trip to ChCh. New home shirt? Yellow Fever T? New home shirt? Yellow Fever T? New Home shirt? Yellow fever T?

It's just all too much!

I know, I know, its serious!

C'mon!!!!!  Where's that )(*&)(*&)(* kickoff????   I've got PRE-MATCH NERVES BIG TIME!!!!!
Profile pic. Should you be interested. Lakhsen, on the right, lost touch with him.
Mohammed, on the left, I'm still in touch with. He's now living in Agadez, Niger. More focused on his animals now as tourism has dried up. Is active with a co-op promoting local goods, leather work and bijouterie, into Europe.

Rojas is always going to be questionable as a traveling player due to his age and schooling requirements. Once school is over maybe, but for now I think he will be a home game hero

That is what I would have thought (otherwise when would we wear the away kit?!?).
Just wondering if it had been announced.

no costa, thats a bit of a let down for me personally. Thought he would have made it in over Ferrante, but its very strong and a draw at least please

Jeez i'm excited and a little nervous about this game.

Every game is important but this time....its the first game of the season and expectations are high.

With the other codes having a crap season its real important the Phoenix get away to a good start. An emphatic win first up will have a lot of people saying "at least the phoenix won "
A loss will mean the media will right us off again.

We have been solid if not spectacular preseason....which is OK. When you analyis Newcastle they really are there for the taking. Coach and player disruptions have not helped them. They have a lot of guys out injured. If we play to our full potential....if we get the tactics and selection right then we should get a result. A loss would be a disaster.

C"mon the Phoenix!!!!!!!!!!

Costa must get the least game time of any pro-footballer in the world I should think, poor sod.
If he were in England hed probably play 60 games a season.

Just check iraqgoals mate. will probably be there.

I do think they are there for the taking too. Although a draw will  still be ok for me. Just want to see some positive football. I'm hoping Ifill can get lots of space, because he seems a good runner of the ball

I would take a point with some good football. Wont be too disheartened if we play scrappy though as every other team has so far also.

my pick: our new striking partnership to be on fire and bring home a 3-0 win

I don't expect too many away wins but, this is one away match I would expect the win.  Newcastle are rubbish (unless they pull out an unexpected performance like the Mariners).

Love the optimism but I wouldn't expect too much out of Ifill this game - no match fitness and no time to form any kind of partnership

A little disappointed with the team going over and know Costa been taken, it means we are only taking over two strikers, so should Ifil not last 90 due to a lack of match practice we will then have to revert back to a 4-5-1 type formation which i dont overly like.

And what good is having to go back to a 4-5-1 formation if we finf ourselves a goal down?? If we are leading when Ifil goes off, watch us sit back and go for the win by defending for 20 minutes!!

You could be right!

Some players take a while to adjust to new team/league. Serge van Dijk looked ordinary at the start of his carrer in the A-League....1 goal in the first 8 games. once he had setlled you could not stop him scoring.

I think Ifill will settle quickly....once he gets match fit. He s coming from playnig consistently at a higher level than the A-League. sure hope he doesn't get too much stick if he has an ordinary game.

Big question for me this game is we will we go 442 with 2 strikers and leo and Troy wide or will we go with 2 strikers plus leo working the flanks and Diego playmaking in the middle.

if I was a betting man and knowing how conservative Ricki is I think it wil be 442. Nice to see 2 strikers though.

I don't see why he isn't match fit already? He might need time to gel and adapt, but I can't see why he wouldn't be ready

Morning all,

Matchday stat for you....Tony Lochhead (assuming he plays) will today become the leading all-time appearance maker for the Phoenix.  He's currently on 39 appearances, level with Shane Smeltz.

Ifil himself was quoted I can't remember where in the last few days as saying he is not match fit at the moment and is going to do his best to last 90 but would not hold his breath.

Yea, I read something like that - that he's get through the first few games on adrenaline. Didn't sound all that promising.

Absolutely mental not to take Costa.

This is from SST:

Ifill cheerfully admits that, four months since his last competitive game, he's "not fully match fit, no chance" but says the beautiful absence of midweek fixtures will help him hit the ground running.

i'm guessing he's just throwing words out there. He aint played 90mn, but he was trialing in the UK before he came over, and he looks like a fit player (unlike a Charlie Miller or something). He should be good for 70 min if not the full game. He's playing in the front two, not a box to box midfielder.C'mon Iffy!
