I'd fly up for that game for sure.  Would be amazing.  In all honesty they'd be far, far better opposition than the Galaxy and we should get a bigger crowd than at that game.

noun (plural lethargies)
1. a state of drowsy dullness or suspension of the faculties and energies; apathetic or sluggish inactivity.
2.  Pathology a morbid state or a disorder characterised by overpowering drowsiness or sleep. [Late Latin lēthargia, from Greek: drowsiness; replacing Middle English litargie, from Medieval Latin litargia]

And LG you make my point exactly, Everton could be coming but we don't even know who is playing yet. Would we be excited if it was a team like Watford or Derby? Just because its a team with a big name doesn't mean that it will be quality opposition.

Comparing Everton (6th in Premier League) with Watford and Derby (Championship clubs) is ludicrous.

So you think that the team currently 2 points off the top 5 in England may not be quality opposition for the Phoenix? What world do you live in?
Well my point was Everton could play any side. Do you think if Everton played their youth or second team every week they would be 6th?

Another example is Everton or Fulham. Both were mentioned in the article but this is called Nix vs Everton not Nix vs Fulham. So would you rather see a first 11 Fulham side (9th with a game in hand) or a half 1st team, half youth Everton side?wellyphoenixfan2009-03-03 11:24:53

With some of their youth, they could handle the EPL. Moyes is not afraid to try players under the age of 19. God, I'm speaking like an Evertonian.

You obviously don't understand my point what-so-ever.

And yes I do understand that the Nix could make a contract with them about players they bring.wellyphoenixfan2009-03-03 11:29:34

A lot of very supportive, positive comments on Stuff.

I think there would literally be many thousands of football players, supporters and "non footballers" who would pay good money to see a top Premiership team play at the RoF. Fantastic publicity for the Nix as well - around the time season tickets will be / should be on the market.

Make it happen please Terry.

P.S. What a fantastic opportunity to launch the new kit !!

Points to consider WPF

When the Galaxy came out, they knew Beckham. Period. Jones and Langdon were there for those that knew a bit but that was by and large the trainspotters for the rest. Most people couldn't name more than 5 of the Galaxy team (I know I can't name anyone past 1). It sold on the strength of 1 name. Beckham

Now Everton - a marketable quailty team AND players that are known. To most footballing public, they will know of or at least heard the names mentioned. It will sell largely to the casual fans as a quality English Premiership team named Everton. To those that follow the game will go along to see Cahill, Saha etc as well as the fact that they play for Everton.

You really think that Tezza would let them bring along the janitor and his boot boys just for a hit out? Try that and those that follow football, wouldn't turn up to watch 11 no names in a blue shirt named 'Everton' The casual ones will, the supporters wont.

This one is about the players that come along otherwise you may as well find 11 school kids from Wainui and put them in Everton badged shirts for all anyone would know and sell it to the casual fan at $100 a pop.

Personally, I'm not holding my breath. I don't think this one will happen. I've said before that there are probably only a handful of teams who could guarantee the success of a game like this and, sadly, I don't think Everton are one of them.

Apparently I'm apathetic, but I couldn't care less.

I'm not an Everton fan but I'd still fly down from Auckland for the game, save me a seat in the Fever Zone "We're here to watch the Phoenix"

I'd be a great occasion I'm sure.

Disagree completely Jag.

I'd pay $80 to go and watch the Nix play Everton.  It'd be great fun.  If they get it in the diary now I think they could get a sell out.  Plus all the other stuff that could be done on the side as promotional activity and I think it could/would be a success.

Incredible stamina. No shame. Yellow Fever.

Just my opinion. I'd love to see it happen, and I'd go along to watch but 35000 people in the ROF to watch Everton play the Nix? Hmm...

Apparently I'm apathetic, but I couldn't care less.

To be fair I said same about LA Galaxy.  In my head Everton > Galaxy+Becks and cheaper too so should be able to get a good gate.

I agree, but the Galaxy had the Beckham factor which (in my opinion) dragged in a helluva lot of people who would never go to a football match again in their lives. I just can't see Everton doing that.

I hope it happens and I'll be down there if it does.

I say again, the Phoenix will be contracting based on guarantees about the quality of squad and the playing of recognised players.  The Phoenix will have a good idea of what it will take to get people along and are not going to agree to anything without some guarantees.

I think you're absolutely right HN.  If it ain't commercial, it ain't going to happen - Terry S and Tony P aren't the Auckland Regional Council.  I think Tony P pretty much indicated this in his press statement.  And part of the commerciality will depend on Everton putting out a quality side.

Moving on, I wonder how viable it would be to have both Everton and Fulham downunder at the same time to play in a kind of mini tournament made up of, say, four clubs, including us.  The costs of bringing Everton and Fulham would then be split over a number of tournament games.  Ideally, you would include Everton and Fulham playing each other at the stadium in one of the games.  I know these pre-season mini tournaments are popular with British and European clubs, and I know the Aussies have done it before, I think, two or three times - you'll probably remember HN, but I'm pretty sure a couple of the old NSL clubs brought out Arsenal and Celtic one year.

To answer the question raised earlier - I would say the Everton Brand is all that matters. Outside of football fans no one will know any of the players or give 2 stuffs who they are. Mention Everton and ears will prick up. It has happened when I mentioned it to people today who don't care about football. The fact Everton is a well known club that non football fans still assume is a power in English football is enough to generate interest. It won't matter who's playing as long as they come. Every football fan will take the chance to see an EPL club play the Nix and the rest is made up of those that realise another big club has just landed on our door step thanks to the iniative of some pretty switched on guys.
Everton as a brand would work better in this respect than Fulham which non football fans have heard of but have no association with. Yes, Simon played there but the general public don't know that and he's gone anyway.

Does it mean than in 12 months Auckland will try to have an Everton versus the "Auckland stars" or "Oceania has-beens"?

Emerton is out for a long time. Ryan Nelsen wouldnt draw a big crowd alone. Blackburn are fighting against relegation. They arent facing any other team in the area so it would cost more to get them over here

Yeah, but I think it will work. I also think there'll be a reasonable number of first team. My point is that to the general public they will turn up because it's Everton, not because of Tim Cahill

I think it will work aswell however it would be disappointing if they didn't bring down top players as thats what football fans want, whereas non-football fans don't really care.

Tbh don't expect their first team or anything close to it.
it's pre season all their  players bar the injured ones i.e Mikel Arteta, Yakubu (who may be right by then)Nuno Valente (coming right)  will come that's why it's a preseaon match.

ok heres Everton vs Chicago Fire (Everton lost 2-0):
Howard      1st team player
Neville      1st team player and club captain
Baines      1st team player
Rodwell      1st team player
Lescott      1st team player and england squad
Jagielka      1st team player and england squad
Pienaar (85' Yobo)    1st team player south african squad
Gosling        1st team player
Yakubu (79'Jutkiewicz)  1st team player and member of Nigerian squad currently on long term injured list
Arteta (64' Vaughan)  The best little Spaniard we know unfortunately injured and unlikely to come down
Baxter (46' Osman) the next Wayne Rooney but not 1st team (yet)

and vs Colorado Rapids a few days later: (Everton won 2-1)

almost the same except  for Leon Osman 1st team player

Tim Cahill was injured with 5th metatsal injury so never went on last years preseason tour of the U.S.A
And Joesph Yobo's brother was kidnapped so he was in Nigeria at the time with family trying to obtain his brothers release

So i'm pretty sure we'd get a bloody good side coming down to play whoever and don't worry people will come

If you know your history it's enough to make your heart go whooooah
