Midfield deserved bagging they were sh*te
agree brown and lia missed a lot of passes, but there were also some nice periods of interplay

but when leo is having a 50min snooze, ifill gets back little past half way (and he's not playing second striker this year, so he's got to do more work tracking back) and lochhead and muscat are not making themselves available for a shorter back pass - then brown and lia are looking to play miracle balls, or just plain old hoof balls

i think it comes from lack of pace accross the park, apart from leo.  ifill's not going to track up and down and lochhead and muscat are going to be conservative coming forward to support play when up against a pacey side like brisbane

maybe be a bit more to it than brown and lia are sh*te (just maybe lol)

Caceres was a decent impact player, and IMO better than Hearfield, and arguably Bertos, at least some of the time. Both he and Costa should've been retained IMO, and maybe Hearfield could've been shown the door.

Oh well...bedtime, lets see if we can pull a shock out the bag next week.

Big disadvantage I reckon was our inability because of Pastons injury to pass back to him. Meaning we often played a lot of hoof ball straight into touch from defense. Where passes back would mean freeing up space or playing down the pitch. I think Siggy shanked about 5 clearances. If that injurt hasn't improved then Vukovic in next week thanks.

Well, I thought we did OK, not at all as poor as many think. It was an odd game to watch in a way because the style of the two teams is so different. Roar were very confident, played smart footy, tried to pull us all over the park - which, generally we coped with well - and shut down Ifill by mobbing him whenever he got the ball.

The subs and consequent change in formation confused me. Take off your big striker (who I thought was really good) yet continue to whack in increasingly desperate and mostly wild crosses? Strange.

But if you do insist on continuing down that road why not bring on the best deliverer of crosses the Nix has - Daniel? And shifting Leo to a more central role was mystifying, as he's never played well there and, frankly, was well below par tonight anyway.

Nevertheless I thought we contained them pretty well, had good stretches of possession and if it wasn't for Theoklitos might have come away with a point.

if paston was fully fit ill wake up in the morning and top up my hangover and run a marathon.. i whish i culd live of a back pass save like he has...bring on vukovic
cannot believe bertos was enetertaining thoughts of being signed by a european club after the world cup. oii leo u wouldnt get a run for olympics central league team.
to win this league we need a midfeild.. lia and brown simply do no cut it and will not be good enough...

OK, the Roar had several.  But we had four quite frankly excellent goal scoring chances.

One could have been slotted with consummate ease.

Just looked into this thread now and wondering if I watched a different game to the one some others watched a few hours ago.

In short, it wasn't that bad! Sure we started bad but got better and better up until the goal. It was the kind of game that could have gone either way.

There were some negative signs, e.g. Lochhead and Bertos need to deliver more, but there were some positives also, such as Pavlovic (impressed me vs. Boca and again this evening). Durante had a very good game and Muscat was very good also.

Not all of the players are on top form, e.g. Ifill and Hearfield, if they get into the swing of things over the next few weeks then we will be fine. I did not see anything tonight that changes my belief that we will give the finals a good shake.

While dissappointed with the loss, I'm not slashing my wrists yet. Bertos definitely had a poor game [in fact has played sh*thouse for ages outside of AW games], Siggy, Brown and Lia need to pull finger too. We are only a fraction away from putting it all together again I think. North should make a difference, we look to be well served with striking talent and if Toto is as good as Caceres - that will put some pressure on some of the others to perform or get dropped. Holding my breath.

Thought Siggy played poorly last night, with a few wayward passes and getting us into unnessary pressure. Pasty was great.. Pav didnt impress me with his first few touches, but then he built into the game and made himself known, he worked hard and nearly scored. Leo didnt want it and Brown and Lia got outplayed by a impressive Brisbane midfield. All in All, it was always gonna be a tough game. Well done to Kosta.

i haven't read the whole thread, but woke up wondering if Ricki has brought a bit too much of his world cup success back with him

having big Mac adds to our options and i 'm happy for him and Pav to feature as key options - but we do seem more predictable in how we get the ball into the box than last season (the Manny - Leo goal excepted)

i guess teams have also had an off season to look at the tapes and find ways to slow iffy down

i do think he can be unstoppable and maybe our expectations have become unrealistic - hhhmm

overall last night we were always in the game and that has not always been the case at Suncorp -that is worth remembering imo

wondering how we can shake this team up? It just really needs to wake up. Would love to really go out and change the team heaps to make the lazy ones realise their places arent just theirs.
This isnt what i would do next week, but it sure would make things interesting:

                         Paston
Troy/Muscat Siggy Durante Lochhead
             Muscat/ Lia / Brown
Ifill                     Toto                 Daniel
           Greenacre        Mac

I even think Diego could have done more in midfield today. And thats saying something..
imagine...
Ifill               Diego               Daniel
                      Toto
      Greenacre        MacCallister

Id like to see daniel and toto start or longer game time. Paston and Durante had a great game.

Lia did so many bad passes it was unbelievable.
Greenacre and Brown were spectators for long periods.
Bertos? Why didnt he play?
2 weeks running why Daniel not given a decent run when the game required it. Strange.
Paston certainly kept us in it even though not fit.
Lochead, well he cant cross can he.

Apart from being second best for most of the game, there were times we looked really good and certainly had enough chances to get a result.

Still looking a different team away from home

like a few others I'm thnking some are over reacting to our first loss....but agree that Leo seems a little off his game, especially in the last 35....Ricki has to be thinking about bringing Daniel on earlier for Leo.....I think Lia is struggling which is effecting the whole midfield.

Not much to shake things up, but in the next four games - 3 away we need to do something cos we just don't look a chance away with this setup.

My mornings thought - I'm rapidly getting over; He was sh*t (or words not quite as harsh) but he worked and ran hard. If you work hard and you're still sh*t then what use are you - really ?

Our formation is not working - could we please go back to last years successful formula, or find a new one.

If players aren't on form then, after a reasonable opportunity, drop them - we talk about having depth in the squad and players hungry to start so let's use those hungry players.

Personally I think it's actually the formation and not the players that's the problem and that's where Herbert should start.

He dribbles a lot and the opposition dont like it - you can see it all over their faces. (Ron Atkinson)

Great for Kosta. He makes some mistakes but he has been really dynamic for Brisbane this year. Iron out a few rought edges and he will become very dangerous p layer.

There are a couple things that no one has mentioned.

1: Brisbane ran an extra man at Ifill all night. Smart coaching by Ange but I would then ask why Ifill hugged the touchline in that instance. When you are on the touchline, with a second man coming at you, how can you do anything with no room to move? I put that down to either a tactical failure to adjust or lack of recognition. Either way, Ifill and/or Ricki failed to adapt on this

2: The wide backs played too narrow and in Lochheads case, too high. The amount of times in the 1st half that long ranging floor passes were put in behind Lochhead and to a lesser degree Muscat, was phenominal and just asking to be exploited. I ask you to think about how many times Dura came across to cover Lochhead out near the edge of the box. I respect our attacking philosophy but then someone needs to talk to Lochhead and tell him 'Is it not obvious you are out of position here, here and here?' To play a roving wide back you need a phenominal work rate and I know he is very fit, but is he using it.' I've noticed he's been playing too high all season and balls are just tucked in behind him drawing the centre backs out. This needs to get fixed asap.

3: The lack of a creative midfielder is not helping. The fact that Lia has been less than stellar should mean a spot riding the pine, however the inference is that Toto is not that good because if he was, he'd replace Lia instantly or at the very least, have been on the bench. I think because the tactics and personnel are premeditated to have Greenacre, Macallister, Ifill and Bertos on, its hard to put another attacking player on there as the expense of a holding midfielder so we are stagnant in the middle.

4: Jade North: If Ricki does go to a back 3 of North, Sigmund and Dura then its bloody tough Muscat (does anyone believe Lochhead would get dropped) who has performed and bloody lucky for Sigmund whom does not look natural at this level. I like Ben and his work rate but never give him the ball at his feet to make a choice and never put him under pressure because he doesn't have the speed of ball skills to effectively come out looking good.

In saying all of this, will there be changes? I don't think so purely cause the other options are not tantilising. Pav up front but for whom? Toto and/or Diego in the middle? Possibly Toto for Lia but then I suspect it might have been done this week. Rojas and/or Daniel for Bertos or Ifill? Daniel for Bertos seems likely. Musa and Hearfield for anyone? Probably not.

Its not dire and we are not playing terrible, but I would advocate some alterations before we fall into a mallaise or become predictable. It does show the difference that McKain made at the back last year though and how much we do miss him.

Grumpy old bastard alert

But Paston passed the fitness test......????????

Indeed. Whatever kind of fitness test it was, I think even I might've passed it.

To be fair, still made good saves but I don't see the point in potentially aggravating the injury when there's a perfectly good keeper sitting on the bench.

Vince Lia was soooo wasteful in posession. The number of times he aimlessly kicked the ball away was embarrassing. He even kicked the ball into the stands a couple of times.

Haha its funny how when the greeks used to rate Kost, people used to give us crap because we played for olympic and were mates and what not and thought he did nothing. But now people realise he is good and  are congratulating him. Hes always had the talent, just not suitable for the Nix. The nix have two similar strikers in greenacre and mccallister which will not work! Well done Kost.

Ifill has yet to get to last years form..two goals aside.  We mays as well save Terry some money and go over with only 2 subs at this rate..cannot understyand why when we are losing that all subs are not used...the conservatism or lack of an idea as to how too change the mix is going to eb the ruination of us on the road.

Toto is not the creative midfield dynamo we need..even tho I do like the look of him in the short spells I have seen..cant see it beinga game long performance tho.

Drop Bertos and start Daniel for next game.

Play three across the back and take back the midfield with 5 across it.

We are still one striker down..the one to replace Greenie..like for like  If we dont get that person then we do need to use attacking subs from the 60 min mark onwards..or even half time.

And stop the silly yellows please guys....

Was at the game and the area where we seem to need work/a spark/something is midfield.  Although Lia and Brown run all day they dont or didnt have control of that area of the park

They're very very different. McAllister is a target man with a strong aerial game, Greenacre is a poacher, plays off a target man.

Missed the game, stayed for the forum commentary, wondering why I did.
Shame about Bertos it would seem, sounds like time to mix up his position. Ifill on the right, Daniel on the left, swap one for Toto partway through, anyone?

Paston sh*t cant kick what a FKN joke,as for making great saves thats bullsh*t the roar players screwed their chances up and made it easy for him.As for Lia how the hell anyone can give him a 6 its beyond me he was crap Rickie needs tointroduce him to our players again he might then know who he is meant to be passing to.

AS for Rickie its time the love fest stop, his substitutions or lack of them and the players he uses are crap.
