Great seeing so many YF boys with their shirts off in, what, 8-9 degrees? Didn't realise tigers had so many tattoos.

I would really approve of signing Tando Velaphi.

Yes agreed. He would be a good replacement for Crowther on the bench.

2007/08 - 1st home win? 4th atemot (ie, 4th home game).
2008/09 - 1st home win? 4th attempt ... again.

2009/10 - 1st home win? Very bloody first home game, no less! Damn that feels good.

I know, I know, its serious!

I personally thought Lochhead looked a lot better than he had last season but it wasn't too hard considering he didn't have much defending to do. Like I've said elsewhere Muscat was poor. Watch the highlights again, then you'll see how often they attacked up his wing. They went round him easily and on one occasion he even gave the ball away instead of putting it out. I'd definitely look at having Lia there next week.

If He was the weak link as you suggest then they would of attacked down his flank, which they didn't all night. Even the commentator said with 10 minutes to go that Lochead has had very little defending to do.

He didn't venture forward like we like, but he didn't do anything wrong defensively.

Lochhead is a worry IMO. What about that time fairly late on when he allowed the Perth player goalside to get a free shot in? I remember him losing posession a couple of times as well?

For me, Diego wasn't great until he had a couple of chances before he went off but Ifill and Bertos were probably best.

Personally thought Brown was absolutlely terrible first half.

But, 3 points, big crowd, great winner - can't complain.

Who?

Ferrante, Andrew, no. 10.

You still fail....

Why do you think Lochhead is still in the steam after all of last season and the start of this season?

Because we have no other left footed defenders. Left back is the hardest to fill on a football team because left footed defenders are not common.

Muscat, Mulligan and Daniel (lol) can all play LB. Also I am sure McKain and Lia could aswell.

Would be excellent to have here. Nothing flukey about him either, he is a standout.

I couldn't look when Perth attacked today as it made me nervous. On saying that Paston organised his posts superbly

I agree that there were over 10,000 and, considering the weather, that's great.  If we can kkep the momentum going, that can be maintained

A great crowd over 10k in those conditions, There were heaps over in Aisles 12, 13,14 and 15 sitting up high. Congrats to the Fever zone, in fine voice from the other side, sounds really good. Those who took their shirts off, brave, very brave in 9 degrees.

A good match and it was nice to see two or three forward. Still a few silly mistakes but they will go as the players settle and get to know each other. Ifill was great and Greenacre did a lot of donkey work up front. He kept their defence on their toes and was my own MOM for the effort he quietly put in. Leo has come on in so many leaps and bounds, not the same player as at Perth - heaps better here.

The Perth goalie just had to have a real pearler of a game, at least 3 brilliant saves to deny us, and one wobbly bit that nearly cost him. But he certainly kept them in the game.

Football has returned to the ROF - I'm happy, almost as happy as Ballane in his Stadium jacket!!

+1

Great result, great strike from Leo, great crowd despite the weather however I still have concerns about the defensive frailties of the team

I am also glad that Ifill has scored his first and has hopefully has settled the nerves...

Ferrante should have got rid of that ball.
But wow I can just watch that free kick over and over again.
Bertos has really become the heart of our team and I love his ambitious mentality.
Captain potential?

What a game.  King Leonidas played phenomenally well.  Diego was great as well.  Greatly taken goal by Ifill, he deserved it.

Was getting very nervous when they attacked with them hitting the crossbar twice.  Paston can't be to blame for anything, Muscat seriously faded in that game.  Sigmund and Durante did the job, but of the back four (can't believe I'm saying this) but Lochhead really stepped up.  He did well and it was a pleasure to see him attacking.

I agree. I thought Lochhead actually didn't look too bad. Didn't  have too much to do, but was quite good and did put a few good balls in there.

I really liked that formation a lot and think we should stick to it. two up front is so much better than one. We really just need to solidify a strong back line and this team could go to the playoffs for sure

Ferrante has been awful since the first season. Missing sitters, sub-par marking and then tonights travesty. Dead wood. Gotta go

Disagree.  I like Ferrante as a player.  Far prefer him there to Brown.  Other than the first 5 minutes he was fine.  Did well with McKain.

Aye - with you there LG with all of your post.

Hope that silly mistake in the first few minutes does go over time (i.e by next week) and that goalie was class.   Paston did well too - just gave us a few nervous moments (like that high ball he almost didn't get hold of).

Happy?  Too blimmin' right! One of my kids' team won this weekend, washing machine full of Wharfies and Phoenix shirts, Toon won as well.  Great start to the ROF home season.  Coming out at the end hearing all the YF in "zealous" mode and lots of car horns sounding in the street.

Dontcha just love footy?

Lovely day in Wellington.
Ifill played with real purpose, some superb shots on ,well taken goal, has the knack of being in just the right spot.
Bertos just loving the way he's playing, instrumental in all our goals to date and a what a cracker to win!
Diego and Greenacre.. good games too. When these four start gelling, working combinations and get to full fitness our front end will be looking positively threatening.
Some good performances across the park, plenty of things to be worked on defensively, but well done Wellington Phoenix!

I'll bet the management and marketing team breathed a huge sigh of relief tonight after that result, and that turnout, in spite of the weather.

Here's for some good results away and a big roll-up next home game too, Friday 4th September.

... and seeing those stripes in full colour glorious reality.

That shot by Ifill in the first half shortly after we were 0-1 down (left side of the goal going in the right hand corner): shot of the match ...bringing out the save of the match.

Re: Leo at Perth - he got he most assists out of anyone in the comp his first season there. His 2nd season he faded away but he's always been this good.

btw what is this about people saying that it's good we had 2 strikers? Did we not last week? I thought Ifill played a wider role today for most of the game also and Diego ended up interchanging with him a lot in the first half especially. imo Ifill is much more comfortable a bit wider.

Thought that Ferrante and Muscat were the only bad spots on a good team performance. Ferrante didn't offer enough support to McKain when he tired in the 2nd half and I thought Vinnie Lia did well when he came on to rectify that. Muscat got ripped apart for most of the game by a guy no one has ever heard of before.

Ifill, Bertos, Diego and Greenacre were all very good - just at different points of the match. Ifill and Leo started great but faded, Diego took up the mantle in the 2nd half by himself with Ifill and Leo a bit invisible (till *that* goal of course). Greenacre was solid throughout the whole game though. Really like the look of him.

I have to say I was pretty dissapointed, but we missed shots that we should have converted.

Did you not see the other four time he had the ball in decent position and lost it? Twice when the ref had called advantage and played on from fouls against us, next play Ferrante loses the ball...he's not playing well enough to be starting...Brown was very quiet last week, but consistantly shows better performances the ferrante ever will.

Brilliant result and brilliant goal by Bertos! All round he was dangerous, dribbling, pace etc. Ifill was top in the first half too. Siggy and Dura played well also! Thought we looked very good in the attacking third in the first half

Some of you are hard to please.

Me and my friends had a great time. Good to see a team graft so much.

The question remains: Was Leo's run up longer than the distance of the shot?
Profile pic. Should you be interested. Lakhsen, on the right, lost touch with him.
Mohammed, on the left, I'm still in touch with. He's now living in Agadez, Niger. More focused on his animals now as tourism has dried up. Is active with a co-op promoting local goods, leather work and bijouterie, into Europe.

im not going to read 26 pages and im sure this has already been said
ifill and greenacre have potential to be a lethal centre foreward pairing up there with archie/allsopp and smeltz/ porter. quality players, know what football is.
bertos improving and finally proved himself, if he hada blasted that free kick over like we all were thinking, we would still be spewing.
lockhead is not good enough for a professional left footed fullback. thats his job!! he should be better, chipping crosses in isnt dangerous, he was solid defensivly last night but how hard could that of been.
ferrante and brown both arnt good enough, but ferrante pips brown on distribution. we need a good CM as mkains playing out of position and cannot be expected to run a game.
lia looks good on debut.
pastons seriously struggling, past it, worried for the world cup.

Lia was not on debut, but he is a risk, he is a nutter!! He will arguebly get our most cards this season.

Ferrante had a poor season last year, but was very good hte season before that. I am looking forward to him having another good year now we have a decent formation and have two attackers. Our style of play last year did not suit him, this year should be a much better fit.

Lochead is a very capable defender, who hopefully can recapture his top form. Last night was a good step forward i thought.
