An interesting comment that from Derdyshire.  I've known about Ifill since the early 00s.   A better question, as you so eloquently point out is who is Derbyshire?  A failed pro it seems.

that is so unreasonably harsh.

some journo asks a 19 year old kid whose been in NZ a week  what he knows about Phil Ifill, one of England's 3 trillion pro footballers - he simply says he not familiar with Ifill and people give him a hard time. give him a break

Agree with that. Imagine if the poor kid had lied and said he knew Ifill and the journo had gone on to ask him what he thought of Ifill's abilities and strengths? You guys would have been giving him a whole lot more sh*t if he pretended to know things which were completely inaccurate. He was damned either way.

Perhaps the questions should be asked of the journalist with the Manchester United fixation.  I read that and thought, what desperate cultural cringe would have you even asking Derbyshire about it.

Bizarre.

Yes, that is an Ifill bizarre.

Yeah that does make me feel better.

I was reading through some CP supporters forums and they seem to be not too bothered by him leaving, but really suprised he chose us. Apparently he would easily flourish in League 1 and people find it strange that he chose us with such a lower wage.

They did say he had a few injuries last season, so hopefully he's all good

They needed an answer, because they were waiting on two other players. I spoke to my girlfriend and her parents and to my mum, and made a few calls in the middle of the night."

Interesting, speculation wise. Good to know he's been a wanted man in the last couple of weeks.

Totally agree, bloody hell you can't expect a kid from an academy to know the name and form of every player in the UK.

The fact the kid didn't know who Paul Ifill was in the first place is not the important point. The issue is the judgment of the journo who decided he'd be a good primary source. Just because he has been involved with the Manchester Utd setup as a youth player, shouldn't make him the go-to-guy for everything football.

It's a case of someone who should know better getting sucked in by the mindless hysteria surrounding Derbyshire*. From everything I've heard so far he'll be doing well to make Team Wellington.

* No blame can be attributed to Derbyshire himself for said hysteria.

But why even ask the guy about this? Like you said, he's unlikely to have known much about Ifill anyway, so it just looks weird.

At any rate, if you felt you had to ask, why report on it if he had nothing useful to say. It just looks weird.

He just made a mistake of including this kid in his article. I think they have just got their head in the wrong place thinking this kid is going to be the new football star of NZ or something? Who knows. But to be honest, I don't care that he doesn't know about Ifill. Bet he knows next to nothing about Fowler too.

The paragraph was totally random in relation to an otherwise good read. It was almost like it was needed to fill up space, just appeared from nowhere, then resumed where the article left off. Poor form Royal2009-07-23 10:31:07

Don't turn this into a 'knock Millmow' thread.

Few people, apart from some overwrought 'Nix nuts'  would have reacted badly to him getting a quote from the kid.

MOST publicity is good publicity. This story did its job. It reminded people that the new season is about to begin and the club's busy signing players from decent football teams even some rugby fans will have heard of. Job done.

So let's try hard not to make enemies in the media. We need all the friends we can get!

Profile pic. Should you be interested. Lakhsen, on the right, lost touch with him.
Mohammed, on the left, I'm still in touch with. He's now living in Agadez, Niger. More focused on his animals now as tourism has dried up. Is active with a co-op promoting local goods, leather work and bijouterie, into Europe.

Interesting point this, I wonder if certain Aussies are waying this option up.  I'm sure a number of the Aussie Phoenix boys have been in the squad long enough to gain NZ citizenship (read Daniel) and will never be good enough for Aussie (but did play as youngsters), would they be keen to be kiwis?

Durante, Lia, Ferrante and maybe Tambouras come to mind here.

Nice Q&A article with iffil in the Dom Post sports lift out today.

Also as news snippets:

"Spurs boost defence" (some young'uns to help out the ageing Woodgate and king)

"Sharpova 'fit'" (indeed!)

"Phoenix till they lose"

If he thinks Wembley is good, wait till he plays on the surface at Westpac. I hear the Wembley turf should be turfed out yet again.

Q. Best goal you've scored?

A. The final goal of the only hat-trick of my career, against Cambridge United about five years ago. It was a decent goal - left-footed into the top corner from 30 yards - but it was especially memorable for completing my hat-trick.

Here is the hattrick. Probably already been posted but meh

Yeah, but Ifill would only have played on the old Wembley turf which I think we can all agree would have been like playing on a bowling green.

His favourite band is Kings of f**king Leon.

Noooooooooooooooo!

Gutted, absolutely gutted.

The only consolation is that footballing ability is usually inversely related to taste in music so maybe it means he's a good acquisition.

Somebody send the man a copy of Phoenix City quick. Rewind selecta!
