Phoenix Ownership - Rob says FTFFA (Part 1)

This from Fourfourtwo today

" Mr Greenham says.... the club costs between $400 k and $450 k a month to run, which he admitted was more than Mr Seripisos could afford at the moment"....."currently at the moment and over the last three months he can't afford to run the Phoenix"

Also " insiders at the FFA were confident they would find replacement owners(for the Nix) and claimed to have already had interest in taking over the licence weeks ago"

Take these for what you will but IMO there is a higher probability(however remote) that new owners exist than Terrys ability to keep running the club.

So lets get this over with. I would rather see whats out there than have the club dragged through more scandle and media crap. Coz you know whats next.....wages won't get  paid. Grumpy players will walk out and the media will have a feeding frenzy.

For those sick of bad news( and I know its the wrong place) but Kosta Barbarousses has spent the last week trialling with a top Italian club  ...rumoured to be Lazio. Go you good thing

Lazio? Kosta's going to the fascist team?!?

Seriously, I heartily approve of Kosta going to Serie A, and Marco Rojas going to any team that's not in the A-League so I don't have to yell JUDAS at him. Doloras2011-04-19 18:17:01

Nipples probably fancies himself a crusading journo (as many ex-student journos do), and he kind of likes being the spearhead of a lynch mob, having taken the job over from Dave Burgess. And there is a lynch mob, by which I mean "lots of people who have been burned in business deals by Terry and would love to see him nailed to the wall". And all that drama and excitement is good for paper sells and page clicks. Tl;dr: lynch mobs = good business for papers.

However I do know about business....its what I have been doing internationally for the last 20 years or so. In my humble opinion and in the opinion of my colleagues who I work with and value their opinions highly.....that Serepisos Inc is in the last stages of termination.

We have all seen plenty of examples of what Terry's business's are going through and I am afraid that unless someone steps in with a huge cash injection that it is all over. It is not just about paying off the IRD today....its about the ability to keep the business's running commercially in the future.

In some ways it might be better to clear the air now. Either there are people out there ready to take over and run the club or not. Its better to find out now than have the club stumble along and eventually fall to pieces in a very ugly and public way. At least if there is a change now it gives any potential owners the time before next season to get things like recruitment done in a proper way.

The club has only 12 players on its books...and a skeleton back room staff. Its not fair on players or fans to draw this out. I would rather see if there are new new owners out there and get this over with. IMO there is a higher probability that there are potential new owners than Terry having the finances to run a proper viable football club.

Thank you thank you thank you, to the rest of you, grow up a bit...one page back you have the CEO of the club saying that with 6 staff and 12 players Terry still can't run the club month to month.  Do you really think that this is all just some jack up by the media?  Let's get real here, the phoenix isn't self funding and terry is struggling to pay for it, why would we not be at least considering other potential owners?

Rightly or wrongly, the A-League structure for teams means there is no point of ownership changes through sale (at this pre-profitability stage, at least). All the IP and contracts belong to the League, so no one is going to buy Terry out- because there is nothing to buy.

Sad reality is that the only way a change of owner will happen is for Terry to walk away, or go belly up. He seems minded to do neither.

That's incorrect, what you are doing is taking the liability off his hands - which is the right to compete in the A-League.  Just because the club is cash flow negative doesn't mean it can't be sold.  If terry sells the club he saves whatever he is currently injecting to keep the club afloat every month, which the CEO says he currently can' t afford.  That has huge value for him.  The purchaser pays $1 and takes over the licence

There is no reason for a new owner to pay $1 to terry in this current situation where it looks like the vultures are circling.

Why buy off terry when the league owns all the IP and when he leaves/goes belly up the license reverts to the league anyway? At that point, a new owner merely has to negotiate with the NZF and the FFA to be the preferred new owner.

(They can these invest this cash in the business, rather than have given it to terry)

NBR slapdown #2

I vaguely rmember this story from last year but it bears repeating.

They really pissed off all their champagne-swilling, libertarian mates when they did this:

The NBR Veuve Clicquot competition

(David Farrar's blog - just one of many right-wingers who was sucked in and then got really, really pissed off. Don't get between a National party voter and the champers - ever!).

If you want to take over the club you go to terry and agree to take it off his hands.  If you intend to honour existing contracts and carry on running the existing entity, i.e. Wellington Phoenox FC then that's the way to do it.  IP etc may be with the FFA but all player and staff contracts, sponsors etc are with the current entity.  The phoenix may have negatve cash flow but it does have assets, kit balls trainign equipment etc etc.  You want that stuff.

If the licence goes back to the FFA then there will be a period when anyone can bid, you may not be selected.

$1 is nominal consideration to allow transfer of the rights and obligations.  You are not paying Terry anything.  He walks away and you assume the obligation to finance the current 400k a month or whatever it costs to run the club.  This is not unusual, people buy businesses for nominal consideration all the time and assume debt.  You buy the club for the value of the debt.  In this case you buy the club for present the value of the future negative cash flow

Understand what you're saying- but Terry doesn't seem minded to sell for a nominal fee, which is what I was saying - he seems to want to hang on to 50% - impasse.

Still, the idea of multiple interested bidders seems... fanciful :(

I am very worried and not encouraged in the least by this $4million payment. Quite clear the WGA 'masterplan' was an absolute crock and it would appear TS was an idiot to fall for it like so many others before him.

Would love to know who performed the due diligence TS spoke about in his interview/s - and exactly how diligently said diligence was performed.

Terry in bullish form there.

I have to say I am loving all of this. Just absolutely fantastic drama.

You know, I've got a terrible feeling that maybe WGA is the real deal. "Terrible" because if the money comes through, that will mean the Nix will be associated with Ali Syed for ages.

I can understand if terry is still waiting for the money and due diligence, by WGA on Terry to clear, and for the money to come through why the nix is in trouble.

But i can't understand why Santander's players and staff are going unpaid.

If Syed was a keeper, i think you'd all know what we'd be yelling at him.

Also on the table at Mr Serepisos's meeting today with Ahsan Ali Syed will be WGA sponsorship of the Phoenix, which is losing about $1m a year.

"We are looking to finalise a very, very large sponsorship deal worth millions and millions of dollars to the Phoenix," Mr Serepisos said. "It should allow the Phoenix to carry on independently in the blac

how much is millions and millions?

Coz Mr WGA is going to give the Santanders wage money to Terry coz he promised him that he will get millions and millions....hah!

This is like a soap opera.....and a particularly bad one. If we all did not have such a strong passion for the Nix it would even be comical.

The WGA is last chance saloon for Terry. You have to admire the guy....he is going down fighting. I suspect the main reason Terry is going, is to try and get his $1.5 deposit back......and to break the guys legs!!!!!

Dont forget the goal scoring stat. Vukovich is a better player for the phoenix because he has scored more goals than paston. Don't think that was WPF, but was still hilarious comparing 2 players based purely on goals scored.
