Surely this is the future* for Rob (no actual footballers, stadiums or Wellington football fans required).

The e-League's online streaming channel hit two million views during yesterday's Grand Final, which Sydney FC, played by gamer Samer Eldabar, won 6-1 to complete a strange sort of Jose Mourinho treble for the Sky Blues.

If you've been living under a rock - apparently - the e-League is the A-League but played on the videogame FIFA.

If you don't see the point, you're part of the minority....HAL e-league metrics

Meh, I don't think that article is saying anything new. I think the Nix want to sell part of the club if the A-league becomes independent ideally as a Man City/Melb type deal. If it does not become independent, they have nothing to sell because the licence has a geographical tie.

What's up with Ifill, did he take his mopey pants pills this week before talking to Simon Hill?

Note that the 6 mil price tag, nor the 5 mil offer is sourced.  Also, so called 'merger' talks with South Melbourne are now confirmed as trying find a partner to run W-League and NYL teams, with some games to be played in Aus (likely the 2 or 3 currently played in Melbourne - but that is my own speculation).

Given that we now know the Phoenix licence is territorial to NZ, and the price the FFA want for an expansion licence is $15mil, I find this very hard to believe.  In fact, buried further in the article is this

"whilst the Phoenix are seeking to maintain a footprint in the form of team colours, or a percentage of ownership"

So entirely consistent with what Morrison is saying.  They are happy to talk to potential expansion bids about partnerships, but not interested is selling in full.

what is it these days with people expecting journos to reveal their sources? - the head of the Brisbane Strikers and South Melbourne have both said they have been in talks with the Phoenix, which is something Morrison admitted as well (although without naming the parties) . Of course they aren't going to reveal how much they are willing to spend, hence the use of the word they understand, ie they've been told a figure but as its a commercial deal no one will officially admit to it

While the Phoenix licence is territorial to NZ, am pretty sure the FFA wouldn't have a problem changing that if it meant they'd get rid of the Phoenix

I'm more worried about these rumours than the initial ones, partly because it seems Morrison wants some sort of merger

The South Melbourne deal would have seen them running a Youth and Women's team and some games played at Souths -it's bad enough having a couple of games in Auckland each year. (I'm guessing it would have been more than 2 at Souths)

The $6 million price tag comes from the South Melbourne guy, Papastergiadis, who said they were offered 25 per cent for $1.5 million - so 100 per cent then figures to be $6 million. Obviously that was 11 months ago, so whether it's relevant today is another matter.

It’s a pipe dream to think Nix can claim some sort of ongoing stake with South Melbourne majority ownership. SMFC fans are not going to watch Nix branded team in melbourne, even if the youth and women’s teams are branded south. South Melbourne has far more brand equity in melbourne than nix. Might be possible with a Gold Coast or FNQ in theory but unlikely as FFA wouldn’t have GC or FNQ in the next 2-3 phases of expansion.

I'm not expecting them to reveal their sources, i'm commenting on the way they have placed the sourced and non-sourced parts of the story to blend them together and make the unsourced parts seem more credible than they otherwise would.  From the South Melbourne part further down the article, the 6mil is actually credible, but as a valuation to base a partial (minority) sale, not as a price to sell out completely.

Agreed, but it's presented as a price the Phoenix are willing to accept for a 100% sale, rather than a valuation to base a part sale on.  The article uses it to imply that the Phoenix is actually for sale despite Morrison saying it's not, and the only issue is haggling over price.

No announced coach, no off contract players signed as far as we know. Owners say not fully selling, but appears might be considering partial sale or new investors.  At end of next season licence effectively has no value unless a league governance changes work out for Phoenix. Partial sale i dont see working for an Aus outfit unless the Phoenix becomes an Australian based team.

The only way the owners have any chance of really being sure of any return on their investment is to try and sell all now ,or remain partial owners but relocate the team to Aus where new majority owners want it based, and in a few years the remaining Wellnix owners sell their share out to the majority owners for a better return.

Depressing as it seems, i still wonder if we will have a team next season.

Maybe these clubs Strikers and SMFC are pissed because Morrison told them, no the full licence is not for sale. They desperately want to get their hands on that licence. Going to the media spreading stories, destabilises the Nix, ‘cheapens’ licence value, probably increases chances FFA won’t renew licence etc etc

It’s in interests of these expansion bidders that the Nix folds. Effectively means a 3rd expansion side can join the league. Fudgeers. Morrison must pull his hair out.

Could turn into a right dirty tricks campaign.

I think it is, already. What we desperately need is for the club to appoint a really top notch coach in the next few days, which might temporarily deflect all the bad (false?) news which is pouring down on our heads.

Who in Auckland is going to invest in this?

There might be someone but I'm not certain it would be good for an investor given that bugger all people have been turning up for the Auckland games recently. I'd think there would be a better chance for increased support from some location in Aussie that wants a team but won't be given one in the short to medium term. Would also increase the Australian viewer numbers that has to be more attractive to the likes of Fox.

How would people feel if there was a partial or majority buy in from another Aussie outfit that meant the team was domiciled in Australia but played 5 or 6 games in Wellington? Would you still support the team and turn up at the Cake Tin 4 or 5 times a year?

Probably not and judging by attendances recently I don't think a lot of other people would bother either. We can't get people to turn up to support a Kiwi team let alone an Aussie team.

Anyhow Kiwi-based matches and Kiwi identity would get whittled down over a few seasons and you'd just have another Aussie team.

No as someone else said that sort of scenario won’t work. Might as well just sell.

However taking max 3 games to a smaller Aussie market (like Canberra, Sunshine Coast), that has only a very slim prospect of getting their own A League team - in exchange for cash injection/equity stake - may work (for the owners anyway). Needs Independent A League to happen first.

https://www.wellingtonphoenix.com/news/wellington-phoenix-end-speculation

Great, clear statement from the Phoenix calling the media on the bullshark and speculation.

"Here we begin frank speculation. And since we are speculating, we'll use those powerful pseudo-laws, the Principles of Mediocrity and Minimal Assumption.” ― Vernor Vinge, A Fire Upon the Deep

As a club we are loath to comment on speculation around the club but given the paucity of fact checking by media outlets we are responding to some recent stories by two of those outlets.

On Wednesday Fairfax media carried a story stating “South Melbourne says it is also looking to do some sort of deal with the Phoenix...” and that they “ had initiated talks with the Nix almost a year ago”.

Fairfax ran that story without contacting the Phoenix and without bothering to check the facts.

For the record the Phoenix are not doing any deal with South Melbourne, we are not in negotiations with them and the last official contact that the Phoenix had with South Melbourne was August 2016.

One phone call from Fairfax would have established this.

Today SBS have published a story claiming, amongst other things, that the Brisbane Strikers, another expansion club, “want to make a stand-alone purchase, whilst the Phoenix are seeking to maintain a footprint in the form of team colours, or a percentage of ownership”. They go on to quote Strikers Chairman Bruce Atterton-Evans “ I can say talks are ongoing” whilst declining to divulge any of the detail of the negotiations.

They also quote another apparent associate of the Strikers, Miron Bleiberg stating that the club had been ahead of the curve in their approach to Wellington and “... they’ve had a few more approaches but ours still stands”.

This is pure fairy tale stuff. The Phoenix have made no approach to the Brisbane Strikers, we have had no discussions with them and there are no talks on going. Can we make it any clearer than that?

No one from SBS fact checked this article with the Phoenix, it doesn’t even rank as mediocre journalism.

The SBS article also states, following on from the Fairfax article, that David Dome the GM of the Phoenix and Rob Morrison the Chairman, visited Bill Papastergiadis from South Melbourne last year in Melbourne, “seeking to off load 25% of the club”.

This is not true.

The only meeting the Phoenix had in Melbourne, with South Melbourne, took place in June 2016 and that was in response to an approach from South Melbourne to the Wellington Phoenix. There has been no contact since August 2016 , apart from an email from South Melbourne three days ago which the Phoenix have not replied to.

It would appear that some of the expansion clubs think it is good business to conduct their negotiations via the media. That is not a view shared by the Wellington Phoenix.

Although we do not want to respond to each piece of speculation, we will endeavour to keep the fans, members and sponsors updated where possible, especially when the media is an apparent adapter of Vinge’s pseudo-laws.

That is amazing hahaha.

I cannot imagine how everyone's feeling in Nix HQ, but my goodness this can't keep happening. And I am so glad we're not taking it anymore.

I also sent it to SBS' The World Game page who the Nix are talking about in the Press Release, saying "How about you post THIS?"

They've only "seen" it. And haven't responded. They wouldn't want to... ;)

I haven't learned much in my time on earth, but one thing I have learned is that people can and will believe absolutely anything, if it fits in with what they already think.

it isn't a great media release if you are a fan

If it was your woman and she admitted (which this press release has) that she was chatting up and flirting for money with every male on the street you would realise she is straying.

She just hasn't got the price she thinks she is worth yet. That's what this press release has said.
