My best guess is the Phoenix will become more of a travelling circus next season with half the home games outside Wellington. Absense might make the heart grow fonder.

That would be the end of the Phoenix. The owners are inexperienced but I hope they're not that stupid.

Question: How much would it cost to put  a roof on Westpac vs how much would it cost to upgrade Newtown Park?

Westpac with a roof and some decent food and a range of nice beers (maybe Wellington craft beers?) might actually add a few thousand people a week!

Christ! Newtown Park! Whatever next. Hell, all you need is a winning run and the crowds will be back! Don't stop believing, guys.

If it moves to Newtown the crowds will drop sharply, these guys have rocks for brains, if the nix start next season at newtown, itll be our last season

Newtown Park is a fucking stupid idea. I really hope this is a case of the Dom Post picking up a throwaway idea and running a story on it in order to sell newspapers, rather than an actual idea from the owners. There's a reason the stadium was built where it is, and that's because it is easily accessible for nearly all Wellingtonians. Newtown is the exact opposite of that.

Before the O-League (televised in the islands but not in Kiwiland) match against the Tahitians, I think it was, there was a severe rabbit problem with F Taylor. Fortunately no bunnies were seen interfering with play on the day. No animal bunnies, that is.

Anyone taking the nice tasty bait the Dom Post is hanging out there on this one is in serious danger of proving Gareth right.

Fair enough for questions to be asked but with all the facts at hand there is no way it's a goer.

Just as we all face palmed this week over Gareth's comments there will be council employees face palming over John Morrison's today.

I honestly didn't think these owners were that stupid, even though they have no-one with football knowledge. Nor do they seem to seek any real football advice.  When the Phoenix put a winning run together, the crowds will come back. That's how it works. If the All Whites beat/draw/or even lose 1-nil in the away World Cup playoff game in North/central America, then the stadium ( whichever one in NZ) will be packed out for the return game. If they get well beaten in that away game, they will only get about 10,000 tops for the return home game. Again, that's how it works. It's all about being winners on the field, and that will never change.

look Gareth's a bit of an ideas man and he's made a packet

it just seems fairly clear he should be NO WHERE NEAR the running of the media strategy

Ricki always seems to do good down to earth interviews

Gareth has been the media face for the club of late, but it sullies the brand as he is a lot of other things to- he's mostly famous for his role as a public intellectual and tall poppy. We need someone to be the public face of the club and control the media message to a degree- keep it simple...

A pro- football club in NZ can't afford to be average because it's a minority sport that a segment of the public and media are always going to enjoy a negative story about. We've gotta be a bit better than that.

it was on topic in the context raised, and maybe you dispute he founded the Cheka
but, back to the football

Cheka (?? - ????????????? ????????? chrezvychaynaya komissiya, Emergency Commission, Russian pronunciation: [t???ka]) was the first of a succession of Soviet state security organizations. It was created on December 20, 1917, after a decree issued by Vladimir Lenin, and was subsequently led by aristocrat-turned-communist Felix Dzerzhinsky.[1] By late 1918, hundreds of Cheka committees had been created in various cities, at multiple levels including: oblast, guberniya ("Gubcheks"), raion, uyezd, and volost Chekas, with Raion and Volost Extraordinary Commissioners. Many thousands of dissidents, deserters, or other people were arrested, tortured or executed by various Cheka groups.[2] After 1922, Cheka groups underwent a series of reorganizations, with the NKVD, into bodies whose members continued to be referred to as "Chekisty" (Chekists) into the late 1980s.[3] With Vladimir Putin's rise to power, the reference to the FSB members as "Chekists" arose, particularly by Putin's political opponents, often with negative connotations.

From its founding, the Cheka was an important military and security arm of the Bolshevik communist government. In 1921 the Troops for the Internal Defense of the Republic (a branch of the Cheka) numbered 200,000. These troops policed labor camps; ran the Gulag system; conducted requisitions of food; subjected political opponents to torture and summary execution; and put down rebellions and riots by workers or peasants, and mutinies in the desertion-plagued Red Army.[4]

and if Dome has already had a go at this and got whatever discount he could get from the stadium, why not have another crack at the next level.  if anything is happening now at all it's going to be a negotiating tactic

1) Felix Dzherdzhinsky founded the Cheka.
2) The Cheka was a secret police, not a human extermination program.
3) Still off-topic, but I can keep going as long as you can or until forcibly stop.

Roofing the stadium would cost more than a new roofed stadium. In allprobability more than the original build cost of the stadium.

Also leninism and Stalinism are the same as communism or socialism and what was seen as the necessary protection against counter-revolution is not the same as population extermination. Not saying the soviets were good but there are parallels with almost everything they did in the states then and today. Dammit I'm sorry this very off topic again!! They provoked me with historical inaccuracies.

the issue was that there were posts starting to talk about extermination programs and Morgan, which is a long way from what he has actually said on the cat thing

i just took it as an example of how OTT this anti-Morgan thing has become

Very much so. His words have not been as sensational as the headlines and their framing in the catalogue we call a newspaper.

Regardless he would do well to use softer language and realize that he is inextricably linked to the nix and that the club will be drawn into any press he gets. For instance he could have said supporters were silly rather than pathetic and still conveyed his point without the creating a drama or as much of one.

You know I am starting to admire Ricki

Club agrees new playing approach early or pre-season, Ricki on board with that

Ricki says nothing to players, does little

Gareth happens to mention this intended new approach in a radio interview

because Herbert has done nothing this comes as a surprise to players

Herbert makes somewhat more than token effort with changes; under his careful tutelage, team performance and morale plummets

and it's all Gareth's fault

Ricki is truly sensational

Morgan made the classical error of demonstrating frustration and letting a few unwise words out

Ricki just stays pretty quiet, continues to do nothing

Dura bails him out with the rallying cry

Quite an impressive effort really

It will still be an oval.  The story should be asking why we have an oval mess of a stadium for one Aussie Rules game every ten years.

You'll be sorry for your lack of vision when the Wellington Roosters make their AFL debut.

Seriously, wasn't it built for big cricket games, in the days when the Basin wasn't nearly big enough?

I have to agree. From a point of view of common sense, there is no way the FFA would allow it. There will criteria in the master agreement that was signed.

Stupid idea? Yes. Realistic? No. Negotiating ploy? More than likely although I suspect when the FFA read this story, they will come out and say no dice killing off this negotiating tactic.

I think people would be well advised to move on on this one and pay it no mind. Considering everyone says the Dom Post report a load of shyte, they are quick to lap it up as gospel. Add to this, considering we got spanked last week, there has been a strangely large volume of diversionary media taking the focus away from the effects of the result and team in ONE week (pathetic fans, cats, playing in a teacup) I smell subterfuge...

changed their minds and moved most cricket to the basin

Why the problem with moving to Newtown Park?  Everyone here keeps talking about the hardcore group of about 4,000 fans so that will fill the place for every home game. Unless a big part of the 4,000 hardcore will not be able to put up with having to take bus or walk a bit

Because it would turn into a GCU situation. Only the hardcore would ever show and we would never be able to attract a wider base of supporters let alone seat them. Newtown park hardly scream professional football at a high standard. Art thou trolling or do you somehow think this is a good idea?

I can't believe that no one has thought about Karori Park as the logical venue to build a brand new fit for purpose stadium.

Ample parking by the Sunshine Kindy at the back.  As many no.3 busses as you can throw a stone at.  A good chippy shop nearby (Corfu), even Brumbys and Subway for the upmarket crowd.

Benburn Park would need a massive upgrade to be the deal-breaking training ground however.
