While it's great to see that this is finally gaining some traction I have a few questions. The article was hardly very clear, is this starting this season? They hope to become incorporated into the NZFC, though it sounded like that would take a while, have they worked out a way to avoid the whole issue of players skipping from one confederation to another? What about the fear of losing the sponsorship of pokies, and how about the issue about if the NZFC is then considered professional or partially pro and the implications this has on our youth going to America and through the college system?
i think they solved all that by way of playing midweek friendlies, rather than anything to do with the competition. hope theyre prepared to play against a lot of B sides. quite shocked nzf decided to fund the side, hope that doesnt mean they wont allow senior fringe players to play?Huawei Wellington United Phoenix Academy Football School of Excellence - WeeNix

Being NZF funded I presume there will also be criteria about NZers playing, I wonder what happens regarding the likes of Crowther, Pavlovic etc or any senior squad member getting game time when returning from injury.
I should certainly hope that NZF would make conditions on who plays like that. With, say for example, minimum of 7 players starting being required to be NZers and minimum of 7 needing to be youth (barring injury). Something like that. Imagine if it was split 50-50 with Aussie youth. The knitting circle would explode.

Well, we have a squad of 19 (expect 21). Fifteen will be in the first team squad any week leaving six if there are no injuries with the reserves. That to me says we probably have eight involved in the 'Academy' scheme, I can't see any of them being anything other than kiwi - except potentially a young Oceania player or two.
I recall 'Bluemagic'(?) posting back here a while ago, and got to thinking i must have a look at the Auckland City Forum. And jeez he certainly has a bee in his bonnet about the Nix.
The (supposed) decision this morning by NZF to support the Nix reserves must have him spewing. Although no-one on their boards have reacted as yet...

That place is jam-packed full of funny! I think there are a few there bitter about the A-League licence heading south. They must mad as hell about the reserve team decision. Good!

chocnut2010-07-28 18:25:19Not surprised. This is how ARC and ACC work.
and to think they could of played at the proposed/failed National Waterfront stadium.

Normo's coming home
even if it's not a perfect solution, it sure looks like a good step in the right direction
well done NZF for sorting something out

Great news even if the details haven't been sorted out - it's the first we've heard about this for a long time.
I think that it will be exclusively a youth team because players wouldn't be able to transfer from clubs in 2 different confederations more than a couple of times in a year, I would think?
That is the biggest obstacle in the way of us having a real youth team, I think, and is why I hoped we would have a team based in Australia playing in the A-League youth out of Canberra or something.

Thinking about it, unless the FFA get fully onboard then none of these players will be able to represent the senior team if they're doing really well (unless they get signed from the youth academy I suppose) as none of these kids are included in the 23 man squad and officially we don't have a youth team to draw from. They couldn't go too and from the teams, I'm saying. The no changing teams more than two or three times in a year isn't the issue as the games will only be friendlies, it's squad size.
we are allowed short term injury replacements though and our squad isn't full...despite all of the regs most clubs seemto be able to sign whoever they want
Normo's coming home
But as they ae friendlies, the youth team isnt actually playing in any confederation tournament, just playing friendlies, so players wont be jumping between. I can't see why the FFA wouldn't let us bring youth players up in similar ways other clubs have. It usually is in injury times anyway.
I also like the idea to turn the NZFC into a 9 team contest. Then add the nix juniors to play the bye team each week. We would practically be in the nzfc but still play these friendlies so would be ideal.

Jesus wept, that bluemagic really has a problem with Greek people, doesn't he? Was he frightened by souvlaki as a child or something?
NZ patriotism is one thing. Outright xenophobia bordering on racism is quite another. I am seriously considering getting together an alternative ACFC forum for followers of the Three Stars who aren't cocks.

that forum really is just bluemagic spouting his stupid narrow views to himself. i encourage you to set up a new forum doloras, that one paints acfc fans in a bad light, which surely isnt representative of them.

Perhaps he's a Liverpool fan, and everytime someone mentions Spanakopita, he thinks he's about to get attacked with a wrench?
Fantastic 2ndBest, really top stuff.
He makes me laugh so much - in a way than Glenn Beck makes me laugh, just the sheer absurdity of his arguments.
Hard to get TV involved if they only play friendlies. Midweek games if that happens will be played on Tuesday nights, Wednesday games don't fit in with training nights.
Put the Nix team in the NZFC proper playing at the weekend within a 10 team league.

A Phoenix reserve team playing midweek matches against NZFC franchises this season hinges on whether New Zealand Football can find a commercial partner willing to support the venture.

I think this could really take off. Hope it could run like a parochial thing- perhaps a nationwide sponsor and a local sponsor for each challenge??
that would be cool. Coverage on Crowd Goes Wild, TV3 news and Stratos/Triangle/local access?

would be easier to attract a sponsor and tv coverage if they were in the competition. just saying.

hard to fault your thinking in that statement Tegal
but from this and similar threads over the last few years - it clearly ain't a straightforward issue

from memory they were set to do it,but got stopped as a couple clubs voted no. they were then going to go over those clubs heads and gain fifa approval, seems that didnt eventuate. the rules were going to be that we couldnt win,or gain o-league qualification. no sane company would want to sponsor midweek friendlies between a b side and some kids, nor would any broadcaster want to show it.

Already been well discussed in various forums the pro's and con's.
back to your condescending best. it isnt a ffa thing playwithfire, its a fifa one. each time a player got promoted or dropped between sides itd be an international transfer, and a player can only make 3 (i think?) in a year. the midweek friendly scenario does get around this, but its far from ideal.

Yeah i know this. But this is just friendlies so they aren't actually transferring at all. All thats happening is that they would be signed up on short term contracts or injury replacement contracts from their youth team that doesn't play in any confederation.
So actually i can't see any reason why this wouldn't be allowed??? Can you help enlighten me what would the problem be with that?
What about a feeder club in an Aussie State League? Would that work? I got that idea while play FM.

But then nobody would want to get onboard with regards to broadcasting/sponsorship.
Catch-22. We beat the 3 transfers in a season rule by playing friendlies but if we play friendlies we lose out on broadcasting and sponsorships as that's easier to get in competition. It'll be very hard to get both which is what is ideal.
surely its the better of the 2 options for nzf if we are in the competition. sponsors, broadcasting, youths playing meaningful games against 1st team sides (instead of the b sides they will play in this arrangement). its a little inconvenient for the nix,but we'd live.

Yeah this is true obviously. I guess I was just referring to what they had planned for this year and if we could bring players up. I guess we can then seeing as it is only friendlies.
They also said that if they expanded the league to 9 teams, then the nix could be playing the team with the bye each week.
I wonder how big a sponsorship deal they want? Because I mean team wellington has exodus and im not sure if TW get very much exposure at all.
Any idea about the players who will be signed?
By reserve team we mean youth right? If so, awesome. GET KOSTA BACK!
cos he's guna be playing Everton so much in the NZFC midweek?
yeh it'd be good, but greedy.
Get Clapham, Lovemore, etc etc...and stick striker not playing with them...
I think the games should get a sponsor and some kind of weekly derby type thing- like a shield challenge match or something...perhaps a local sponsor?? Something to give each game a bit of a kick and make it a real bragging rights kind of thing...
Hey I made this post on the 28th of July!!!
is this a good call or what? Almost as good as Bullion's game analysis right?
Does anyone know of the friendly dates?
I found this on waikato and bay of plenty's site
"The first game is on Saturday, 16 October against Auckland City, kickoff 3.00pm. The following weekend Waikato FC plays the Wellington Phoenix Reserves."
