The owners refuse to pay a cent above the salary cap. They refuse to hire a media manager, even though the club are in dire need of one. Quite a few of the owners were apprehensive about starting up the Academy. And yet, you think they would be okay with stumping up $1m a year to pay for a NYL team? You're having a laugh.

They just need to play a team full of Tom Bisses and everything will be fine.

Funny, the only game the Nix A won was against the NZ U20`s when a good portion of the academy boys were playing for NZ U20`s

So why aren't people calling for Greenacre's and Gould's head given the reserves' results this year.

Some people did question the logic of handing Greenacre the assistants role way back when he was first appointed, including handing such a vital role of Academy coach to such a novice. These voices were generally shouted down....no point rehashing it all now, hopefully the club has learned from this mistake.
It was Ricki's call to hire Greenacre...another f**k up IMO

The Academy is really pretty much Gould's work.

Just telling how it is. I really have no idea what Greenacre does with that team.

This is so crazy right - we're pinning all our hopes on this "academy" to produce future players and it's run by our goalkeeping coach. This is where the Welnix programme is completely compromised, it all sounds great in theory but when you dig a little deeper it's really lacking in substance

They were advertising for someone to manage the academy system. Don't think they ever said that someone had been hired to fill the role.

The whole Academy concept has to be thought through and restructured quite carefully if it's to have any relevance in the coming years.

See I thought the academy has been Greenies and have been calling for him to go.

If its Goulds work... well he was not doing much at HBU and is employed as a GK coach. Leave him as a GK coach and get in someone whose job it is to be the coach of the academy, not GK coach oh and run the kids while you are here.

Gould can stay purely as GK coach. Keep him away as the overseer of the kids. Greenie can move on as well.

1 new assistant and an assistant that oversees the kids and the Phoenix.

We need a high quality assistant who's experienced in the style we want. It's insane to try and turn this team into whatever we're trying to turn it into without someone with relevant experience.

As an aside, at the end of the article, Ernie is complaining about only being allowed 23 players compared to 26 for other A-League teams. Really? That doesn't sound right I thought all teams were only allowed 23. If this is this correct as that sounds very unfair.
Its 23 man roster in the First team salary cap but you can have 3 NYL players contracted outside that. We don't have a NYL team, so don't get them.

So basically they get 3 extra youth players which are outside the salary cap? Can see why Merrick isn't happy.

We already have Adams and Rufer training full time, with no way to get any game time. Would having another 3 kids in the same boat be of any benefit? The most likely 3 would be Watson, Gulley and Bertsch, who are playing for Tee Dubs. Surely that is of more benefit for them?

I can see why Ernie would like the 3 spots but until we are willing to pay for a NYL team, it seems like it would do more harm than good.

Yeah concede you're right there. I guess 3 extra youth spots would be wasted in our case without having a valid reserves (or NYL) team that players can freely move between without transfer restrictions as is the case at the moment.

We really need to work out a way to get our reserves into the ASB Premiership I reckon. The cost and logistics of putting a team in the NYL mean it will probably never happen, and as long as our youngsters aren't playing competitive games regularly we'll be severely disadvantaged.

Even if we could get a team into the ASBP we still have the problem of international transfer rules between ASBP (New Zealand) and A-League (Australia).

Yeah that'd have to be one of the things worked out - which I think is still more likely than us getting an NYL team :(

If Welnix were keen to foot the bill, is the option of a Canberra Nix still possible?  Is that where the AIS team is based?

"Meanwhile, some fringe and aspiring Phoenix players will gain much needed gametime when the club's A team plays its first match of the season against national league leaders Waitakere in Auckland tonight.

Contracted players Lewis Italiano, Josh Brindell-South, Luke Adams, Alex Rufer and Jason Hicks are in the starting lineup, along with young hopefuls Tobias Bertsch, Tamupiwa Dimairo, Clayton Lewis, Andrew Blake, Joel Stevens and Jamie de Abreu."

Sounds very much like a B team. Assuming this is correct it is interesting that Ridenton is not available but Hicks is.
