Normo's coming home
I'm making sure this makes the next page as despite what some media and posters have claimed today this is a HUGELY important point.
Best I could manage was the thread playwithFire started in response to it:

[quote=@WindRainPhoenix (then known as @wgtnphoenixfc)]BREAKING NEWS - Wellington Phoenix sign deal with Auckland Regional Council, 5 home games to be played at North Harbour Stadium next season
I don't however think that gillitrap would relocate the Phoenix to Auckland. That is not good business sense.
What is sensible for the business model is to bring at least one game a year to Auckland, Christchurch and one other.
I am staggered that the Phoenix is 4 seasons old and has yet to play an a league game in our biggest city.
If gillitrap can save the Phoenix, then let him. If he wants to take the game to other regions, then we should emrace it
Wellington will still however be home to 90 per cent of games and be the true home for the phoenix AucklandPhoenix2011-05-31 20:11:35
Auckland will rise once more

You could move Barcelona to North Harbour, and it would fail. It might not fail at a more central ground. North Harbour is a sh*t stadium in a sh*t location. That doesn't mean an A-League team at Mt Smart is a dead cert loser.

So tell us your solution?
They failed in the industrial wasteland that is Penrose, they failed at NHS, so what they play in front of 8,000 max in a 65,000 seat Eden Park? Even the Auckland NPC team aren't keen on that.
Oh, and I reckon NHS is actually quite a good football stadium, albeit in a sh*t location. For all the sh*t location though, this is in the biggest expansion part of Auckland, it has a park and ride that has been expanded 4 times and still isn't large enough so it's hardly the back end of beyond.
I used to leave here at 09:00 in the morning and be on the shore for a game by 17:00. it doesn't matter where it is Aucklanders find a reason not to attend instead of finding a reason to attend.

Nostalgia isnt what it used to be...........
[Odd Future reference. I'm keepin it real for the kids.]
A well funded team in Auckland is a different proposition to the knights. Like it or not, people love to come see winners - that is a market reality. I find North Harbour a average stadium in the middle of nowhere, which admittedly, is not distinct from the majority of NZ stadiums outside Wellington.
(In multi-tier leagues, this is dealt with via relegation - relegation leads to cheaper prices, which leads to more interest in a league where the team is more likely to win, which helps the gate, which leads to funding which leads to promotion....)

Likewise the Kingz spent two seasons owned by Sky TV and they were run by idiots.
Don't fall under the illusion that it ws always a cluster-f**k. Hell in the third season they even tried to buy the best team in the league but because they didn't research the people or think about the market they f**ked up. There were at least two occassions where they were as well funded as any side in the competition.
The first Sky season even had reasonable results but the two biggest crowds were still here in Wellington.

Leeds is actually a really good example of when you get it so badly wrong, how relegation can actually help the club to achieve viability in the mid-term. (Other than them still having that Bates twat in charge, obv.)
(This is now well off topic for obvious reasons - people hate leeds more than auckland.)

ive got a song that wont take long, Adelaide are rubbish.. the second verse is same as the first.. ADELAIDE ARE RUBBISH
Here's where 'the knitting circle' has a totally valid point. David - as someone who would travel from Wellington to Auckland to watch games, I'd imagine you'd be in the minority of about 1 hence the dismay felt by many wellingtonians at the thought of the nix moving to Auckland. This is where the premier model works well as it is many times more accessible to the majority of nzers whether in Wellington, Dunedin or Auckland.

And it doesn't need dodgy millionares, either!
*Just millions of $'s of human misery extracted from people with gambling problems, commonly from the parts of society which can least afford it.
