also think its an issue of players becoming available to receive the short pass, and then the ability to look up or turn and play another one.

so often we just run away from the ball or just look so static. Sure brockie is a striker, but in my opinion he needs to be moving a lot more even if it is just opening up small pockets of space by dragging defender outs of position

What amazes me about this is that people think if we play route 1, we will be better. That involves passing the ball over a longer distance and is inherently less accurate than a short pass.

When we lose possession it will be further away from our goal :P

As I said earlier in this thread, we play a deep defence with our wide players hugging the touch lines, so there's never anyone nearby to receive a pass anyway. Doesn't matter what nominal formation we are setup with we are always wide and deep. Teams like Barcelona and Spain play a high line and their "wide" players constantly come inside to support the centre mids. Sure, touch and vision help (not everyone has a Xavi!) but even Barca's midfield would struggle to play a fluid passing game if they didn't come within 20m of each other.
As an example of what I mean, watch this video  of  Argentina's insane passing goal from the 2006 WC, and look how close the players get to each other. The Phoenix always seem to take the approach of trying to spread the opposition out across the pitch to create space, rather than coming closer to the ball to provide easier options.
I don't think we are incapable of playing a short passing game with our squad but they would have to be set up very differently to what they are at the moment.

I've said it before and I'll say it again - Brockie looks like a player who has never been coached

Although I agree he looks like that I would very much doubt it.

So Luis Corrales has signed with TW now he's moved back to Wellington. How on earth the Nix could overlook him in the January window is beyond me unless he couldn't be taken on as a foreigner. Reportendly he wanted to stay at ACFC but his wife wanted to move back to her family town. Surely he must be a resident by now. He's way better as passing, scoring goals and footwork than either Lia, Smith and Downey. I'd drop one of those like a hot potato and snap up Corrales who I'm sure would love a professional contract.

I'd rate Luis as a finisher above Brockie and Totori.

Perhaps he's too much of a ball player for Ricki.

You make a very good point BZ. It is quite noticeable how isolated the player on the ball usually is when we are playing. The essence of what most people would consider  "pretty football" is  the good old tiki-taka, i.e. short passing with lots of movement. Most of the Argie's passes in that vid were completed within 5 to 10 metres.

Other points:

1. He can't get a start for City but can play A-League?

2. He's way too lazy to play in A-League midfield.

3, How are we meant to afford him under the cap all of a sudden?

More to do with too many attacking options at City as to why he sometimes was on the bench. He's a real impact player and I'd rate him above Totori in terms of passing, ball control and finishing.

Don't know where the lazy bit comes from, he trained hard for City and is fast.

There must be a way to fit him in the current salary cap or are there too many duds soaking up the funds.

You're a club currently craving a fast creative attacking player and Luis fits that bill and he's match fit, unlike poor Hoggy.

Neither of them is A-league quality really.

Yeah, being better than Totori is no indication that you are an A-League standard player.

I think Corales is similar to Totori in that they both prefer to run with the ball at their feet and both do not get their head up to find their teams mates. Also Corales is known for being lighter on his feet in the box.
Agree Totori should never have gotten near the A League. Corales, unless he is a low wage local player, no thanks. I value my import slots more than Ricki does.

id rather corrales in the nix mix if he wasnt an import, than totori hogging up an import spot

Permalink Permalink

On the Totori front, I'm ok with him being in the team even though he is not a starter usually. I base this on the fact that I think its reasonably important for us to support Oceanic talent. In fact I'd be happy if we used 1 import spot a year for that purpose. I don't think the reason we're going so poorly is just because Totori is in the team instead of a better import, there's more of an argument that Smith shouldn't be there I think.

Not sure about that. I don't think we get the best out of Smith because he is played too deep. But he gets an Aussie passport at some point next season, so might be worth a good player to add squad depth. If he was a still a visa, I would say we need better.

Hasn't Corrales, along with Krishna, had a trial at Phoenix previously?  Obviously, neither made the cut.

Do Sydney hotels now not have air conditioning, or are the players being forced to camp?

Totori really is better than Smith IMO.  Not really a high bar though.

Both average in different ways :) Smith was nowhere tonight. Not forward or back, on the ball or covering. Impressive stuff!

At the risk of sounding selfish - fuck Oceania... for now. I think we need to sort our own shit out first before we go handing out charity. Lets win a grand final and then we can prop up Oceania. Import spots NEED TO BE used on quality players. End of. Totori - out. Smith - out.

Ricki - out.

Good point, I think there is a certain obligation to help Oceania football develop. The question then is - is Totori the best Oceania player available to the Nix? David Browne at ACFC is Papuan and is a real star in the making.
