Im inclined to think that we maybe need more and a full rebuild is in order. Certainly we probably need more than than just one creative midfielder as I cant see the Lia, brown combination continuing because if it does then sh*t we might need a new manager as well

1. A striker

2. A creative midfielder

3. A left sided player; FB / Midfielder (Traore would have been perfect)

4. A DM or RB (to complement Manny)

All good enough for the starting 11.

1 = import slot & $$$
2 = import slot & $$$
3 = Pantelis?
4 = import slot & $$$

We have the import slots available, but we won't have the money. We have a squad that should be able to compete for the top 6 spots next year, so I don't see the owners throwing cash at new players.

There is no point making the finals every year if you are not genuinely capable of winning it so more investment is required.

Would rather take a punt on a foreign striker than sign Cazarine. I would even prefer Golgol to him. No Draper thanks - although what a strikeforce - Draper and Pavlovich.

Anyone with two goals in his name deserves a contract

Botafogo - Rio de Janeiro and Wellington Phoenix, my two teams til death do us part.

Damn right. Anything the Nix can actually achieve is clearly worthless.

If my recollection is correct Gareth has stated that the full salary cap will be available for recruitment but they would not be throwing money at a marquee e.g. Kewell or Emerton.

With the full cap available, potentially 3 imports spots free and some very smart recruiting we should be able to fill those key positional vacancies with significantly better players than we currently have.

I don't know which, if any, of the Roar's imports is a marquee but delete any one of Berisha, Broich, Enrique, Adnan and Issey and look at the quality of the other 4 - recruited within the salary cap.

He dribbles a lot and the opposition dont like it - you can see it all over their faces. (Ron Atkinson)

So you would be happy to keep getting to finals with a squad that's not good enough to win it? Me, I would rather we moved up a level but if you're happy to ALMOST win then good luck to you.

I have been happy with the consistency, and I'm sure being in the finals on a consistent basis is good for building a fan base and marketing revenue. Not sure if I would like the boom and bust cycle a lot of clubs in the HAL go through.

As long as you're in the finals, you're a chance.

Also remembering the

The aim should always be to win the league mind you, as everybody wears the same celery cap (except Melbourne, but they're sh*te)

This year was a bit of an exception, and it is quite amazing how well we have done considering the circumstances at the beginning of the season.

Not sure if Speculation is the right place to put this, but cant be bothered starting new thread.

With Gold Coast more than likely to be gone next season, is there a way we could take advantage of their successful youth team setup, and attach our club onto it?

Their youth team really should be kept if possible as it has been immensely successful, but what if the Phoenix were able to help contributing towards this team (still based in Gold Coast) and then have them as our youth team? We would be assisting the league, and it would save a lot of kids an uncertain future.

Then we would have the ability to pull some of those talents into our squad when needed.

Only issue for me would be the distance between travel between the two locations, and the need for young kiwis to be included.

But Im sure guys like Lindsay would be okay with being based in the Gold Coast every now and again.

Just an idea, without all the logistics thought through, but surely with such a successful system already in place, we should try and either take it over completely, or pick up any staff and knowledge of the current runnings of it?

Am sure Lindsay would still be able to take advantage of his sponsor perks despite being based in the Gold Coast! Tegal2012-03-19 16:12:10

I like this. I've pondered the same before. Gold Coast Little Nixers.

A bunch of kiwi lads on the hammer on the Gold Coast?  That's an end of season tour, not an academy.

Mitch Cooper....GC midfielder, 17 years old. Plays for Oz under 17.

Worth a youth spot at the Nix?

Apparently lived in NZ for 8 years....qualifies for NZ passport.

NZ Passport not an issue, unless you mean potential to play for All Whites?

Yeah I dont mind Cooper and Barker Daish. Level headed midfielders but a bit more dynamic than Lia & Brown.

Wouldn't mid them at all, although their chance at getting game time may be an issue

Good thing they wont be on the hammer. The current academy kids seem to manage okay

Lindsay = Barker-Daish and Cooper but with the right nationhood.

Hmm he seems to be more of a holding midfielder / distributer whereas I'd see the GCU lads as guys who will push a little higher up the field and hold onto the ball a bit more.
Sounds like Cooper could have the right Nationhood if he wants

Getting Mitch Cooper ahead of other A-League clubs would be a bit of a coup, albeit not a huge one.

http://www.skysport.co.nz/article/football/headlines/ffa-reminds-clubs-of-rules-58874/

"As the exit queue at Gold Coast United swells up, Football Federation Australia has stepped in to remind all A-League clubs that any approaches for their off-contract stars are to come through them.

In-form wing-back Daniel Bowles on Thursday signed with Adelaide, joining teammates Adama Traore (Melbourne Victory), James Brown (Newcastle) and Chris Harold (Perth) in a growing player exodus.

There will no doubt be more to follow, with the future of the embattled club still uncertain and all but a handful of players coming off-contract at the end of April."
