Interesting the vastly differing opinions on Smith. I see him as versatile, consistent and presumeably not very expensive, worth an import spot. I see him as a must sign.

Main reason for me is the versatility. He really can just about play anywhere on the park.

And he's got a better hang time than Tom Abercrombie

As I understand it the owners have identified a need for significantly more bums on seats for the club to break-even in the short term and determined that the biggest factor in getting those extra supporters to games is an improvement in on field performance - both in terms of results and quality. No rocket science there but, no doubt in consultation with Ricki, they have then decided the 2 recruitment priorities to facilitate that lift in performance are a quality striker and a quality play maker. Those 2 recruitments will be the priority for import spots and salary cap (i.e$s) and, I'm told, are underway (exploratory stage).
If those recruitments are successful that leaves 2 import spots for Greeny, Smith and Sanchez and whatever $s are left over after the youth and RB and ?? are recruited.

I'm guessing Greeny will end up in a coaching role with the youth side.

What happens with Smith and Sanchez may well depend on how the recruitment for the key positions goes and how much they cost to fill.

As with everything else our new owners are doing  the approach is very professional and eminently sensible.

He dribbles a lot and the opposition dont like it - you can see it all over their faces. (Ron Atkinson)

Amphlett was rumored to be going to Newcastle a few months ago. He has a bit of pace, but needs to work on his end product. If he was a underage player I would take the gamble, but at 23 he probably isn't worth it.

Why are we wasting import spots on ok-at-everything, best-at-nothing type players?

[QUOTE=George Kostanza] Do we want any of these Perth players that have been released?http://au.fourfourtwo.com/news/238188,ward-in-as-four-depart-glory.aspxFormer Socceroo Chris Coyne, Todd Howarth, Josh Mitchell and Tommy Amphlett were not offered new contracts.

Howarth has a bit about him for mine; better than Neville at Perth.valeo2012-04-28 16:19:07

Roy Krishna and Henry faarado must have our are very close to having kiwi citizenship. One our both of them could be quite handy as squad strikers, both better then Pav and in Henrys case has played professionally in Australia before.

You mean the same Henry Fa'arado that has just signed with Nelson first division club FC Nelson?

Sounds like he is keen on coaching.. or maybe that's just what they say so they can pay him.

Pav and Fenton. De Vries possibly, but haven't seen enough of him this season to make the call.

This^. Fenton is class. I'd like to see pav play at asb level as a comparison. Most people are thinking of how pav goes in the A-league and comparing that with how the others go in ASBP.

Fuck this stupid game

I would like to see Krishna get a chance at the Phoenix if he hasnt before. he was a pretty dangerous player against nz in the past. has he improved since moving here, it would be nice for fiji to get a professional player in the ranks. could be a win, win, win signing a player like Krishna.

If we build it, they will come...

Who did we play locally in the pre-season? I can recall Pav putting a few goals away at that level.

He's had at least one trial stint in the past.

Throw in Andy Bevin? 2 goals today in the NSWPL and looked quality according to a poster on the Sydney forums.

...but they're both pretty small.  Don't really have someone with the Pavs combination of size and pace.  If these two had their skill with Pavs size they would tear up the A-League.

To some extent I agree with you on this, and I actually like Pav, but at the same time you also have to look at potential. Pav's not exactly old, but he is 2-5 years ahead of where some of these younger players are so a straight comparison isn't fair either.

It's difficult to rate these guys without having ever really seen them. De Vries looked pretty good on VPL highlight clips.

Who's Fenton? Is De Vries the guy who was at Waitak a few years back and then went to an Aussie state league and bagged a few there?

How about Allan Pearce? I know he isn't young and developing NZ talent and all that...but he consistenly scores goals at the ASBP level, and looked good in the game against NZA...

I think about Andrew Jones, etc etc and all the other late bloomers...

Would we have a look at Draper again? Or Kris Bright? Or the other wanderer Chris James?

I wouldn't mind someone with some experience coming back and trying to get their career going again, if they're happy to be squadies if it doesn't work out too...

De Vries has NZ nationality so isn't a foreigner. Interesting video interview with him here

Disappointed at missing out on U20 WC, and is after an A-League contract.

Originally quoted by Nick Ward wrote:

"I went to Wellington to play more games and to get back overseas," he said.

"I was chasing this dream that wasn't there. There's a great group of lads (at Wellington) and I really enjoyed being with them but with the lifestyle and that sort of thing, I wasn't the happiest.

"I should've played out the rest of the season with Victory."

The game time he had hoped to get under Phoenix boss Ricki Herbert was also in short supply last season and Ward was relieved when he was given the opportunity to return to Glory.

"It's been a tough two years and that's why I saw coming back here as a good opportunity," he said.

Glad he's gone with his attitude towards Welly

Nicky ward is a massive douche.

But he does regret making a hasty decision to cut short his Victory spell to join Wellington Phoenix in September 2010.

"I went to Wellington to play more games and to get back overseas," he said.

"I was chasing this dream that wasn't there. There's a great group of lads (at Wellington) and I really enjoyed being with them but with the lifestyle and that sort of thing, I wasn't the happiest.

Ok so Ricki reckons we are signing a striker and a right back.  One from the a-league and one from England.  I assume the RB is from HAL.

Any suggestions?

Let it not be a player from a club no one else wants is all I ask.
