I kinda see Brockie as what Pav should be- someone to come on, score some goals and bring some energy....Hope he scores a swagfull and we have at least two players outscoring him. What kept us short of being dynamite last season was another goal scorer.

Manny bailed us out a couple of times and so did Siggie, and we've lost Brown so...even more desperately needed than ever...

If we don't keep Griffiths we will need another emergency CB.

won't happen this coming season - muscat is returing to the mids.....and Griffiths is gone already.

Griffiths is playing for Heidelberg United in the VPL but is still hopeful the Nix may offer him something

I'd offer him a cheap conract. We need a back up CB and Griffiths still seems like a reasonable option.

I hope we won't be relying on youth development program too heavily for depth. We need squad players too.

Real happy that Brockie is on board. His goals total for last season was more than Greenie, Daniel, Ward, Leo and Pav combined.....and they are all meant to be attackers. A genuine goal scorer to help out Ifill is just what we need.I'm sure Ricki will work on upping his workrate so that he does not drift out of games too much. Plus he is young and a kiwi. I can see him thriving at the Nix. He will be in familiar surroundings with guys he knows well.....excellent start to the off season recruiting

Definitely good enough ?

Another one of those 1999 U-17s that never quite kicked on despite coming within a penalty or two of winning the tournament.  He'd make it 4 that have been at the Phoenix:

 1    Jess KEDWELL-VANSTRATTAN
 2    Shane LOCKHART
 3    Shane CANSDELL-SHERRIFF
 4    Aaron GOULDING
 5    Adrian MADASCHI
 6    Mark BYRNES
 7    Jade NORTH
 8    Louis BRAIN
 9    Joe DI IORIO
10    Lucas PANTELIS
11    Scott McDONALD
12    Joshua KENNEDY
13    Iain FYFE
14    Brad GROVES
15    Anthony DOUMANIS
16    Wayne SRHOJ
17    Dylan MACALLISTER
18    Matthew MILOSEVIC

Compared to the other options out there for us? I'd say hes good enough. The fact hes been in a few Socceroos training squads supports that. I'm not saying hes Nelsen quality but A-League? Worth a punt. Throw in the fact he can play left or centre of mid and def and prob wouldn't cost a bundle.

Not quite. Those players collectively scored 11 goals last season not including the finals, or 12 goals including the finals. Brockie scored 9.

Good signing though.

I wouldn't yet go labelling him a genuine goal scorer, previously he has only scored 7 goals in all his seasons combined. And Greenie, Ward, Leo and Pav scored a combined 11 goals to Brockie's 9.

Though, heres hoping that he carries his goal scoring form across to the new season

Actually it is written as a player announcement.  Could just be greenie re-signing.

Or retiring. Could also be Pasty or Sanchez signing a new contract.

Ever since that "major player signing" when Ifill re-signed, I get a bit worried about these. Although that was great for the club because he's a legend and our best player, I'm just expecting NEW players.

Another player announcement? At this rate we will run out of things to speculate months before the season kicks off.

oh delish, I love a good 6am player announcement.  Good reason to wake up early!

Must be a re-signing since they've not hyped it up on their twitter or facebook.  My bet is that it is Paston.

6am really is a hint. If the announcement was counting from the UK, wouldn't it be 2am or midnight (nz time)?  If it were coming from the US of A however, that would fit beautifully.

Are any of the squad still in Vegas?  Pasty on a heater at the tables?  Alex Smith?

The Wellington Phoenix have re-signed goalkeeper Mark Paston to a one year contract extension.

The 35-year-old says he's feeling good mentally and physically, and is keen for another season in the A-League.

Paston says he contemplated retirement, but after deciding to play on, wanted to be in Wellington rather than looking at options offshore.

"At a ploy, would have to be something very, very good to obviously shift my family so especially at this point in my career,'' he says.

He knows he'll need to be on top form to keep his starting spot, with Glen Moss returning to the club next season.

''(It's) up for grabs really, Mossy's   obviously  a top goalkeeper and obviously they want competition for that spot and it'll be  a good scrap.

"Not just obviously him but you've obviously got Jonathan Gould as well. The three of us obviously will put the team in good stead I think, goalkeeping wise.''

He says retirement was an option.

"Speaking to people that have retired, you're a long time retired so I think it's important not to jump the gun on that. I definitely did have a good, hard think about my options in that regard.''

Shannon Cole or Beauchamp anyone?

We will never fully decide who has won the football.

Permalink Permalink

I though Beauchamp's performance against us in the play-offs was one of the worst displays by a centre-back I've ever seen. Comically bad.

So that's a no from me.

Would be ok as a squad player, but doubt he would play for squad wages. I think Beauchamp & Cole are West Sydney boys, so might end up at the Unicorns.

Yep, would take Cole. Quite a consistant attacking player that could help out down the flanks.
