Phoenix Transfer Speculation 2013/14

I would be surprised if Ernie pounced on Krishna, unless it was only a short term replacement - but that would be a poor option for Krishna.

Krishna? really? I've not seen him play but the word on here seems to be that he is good in ASB but won't make the step up. Surely there are other options available to us than replacing an import with an ASB player?

Why so disparaging of Krishna and the ASBP if you haven't even seen him play? When City played Casablanca Krishna was immense and that's at a level probably way higher than A-League especially considering Casablanca went on to beat South America champs and make the final.

Nothing wrong with Krishna and the guy has my respect. It would only make sense to get him if he is a long-term option (like Riera), unless he is a NZ citizen. There are not that many good strikers floating around that are cheap and willing to stay on long term.

I would think that Krishna is more a Ernie type signing than that guy Lujic from the VPL. Ernie has already noted that guys like Riera coming out of the ASB Prem can step up to A-league level.

I have not seen much of Krishna but people who's opinion I respect rate him as a player. He played OK when I saw him against Casablanca and took his goal very well. As a striker all you can do is score at the level you are playing...and Krishna has been certainly been doing that consistently. 55 goals in 75 games for Waitak is a very solid effort. Plus last year 25 goals in 22 games  (ASB and Oceania) is outstanding. With the amount of goal scoring chances that the Nix are creating you would think that someone like Krishna could do a job at that level.

Interesting that Ernie seems to have a lot more respect for the ASBP than Ricki had - good on him. It would be very interesting to see how Ian Hogg would develop under Ernie. Would like to see him given a chance.

Lujic was with the Victory NYL when Ernie was in charge, was very highly rated 5-6 years ago but obviously didn't kick on. Maybe Ernie has kept an eye on him.

Torn on the idea of Krishna, happy to see guys in the ASB Premiership get their chances but as a replacement for Ifill it is rather underwhelming.

Siggy, Boxall, Hogg, Riera, Hicks, Ridenton ... Krishna... You're just Auckland City in disguise.

Well, you asked for it.

Sounds like Paartalu is coming back to the A League...

Riera and Hicks would fall into a similar category in terms of the level they've been signed from and Ernie has got good return from them so I don't mind if it's Krishna regardless of who he's replacing. I think it's unrealistic to think we could find much better on a short term contract. Also Ernie probably isn't dwelling on the loss of Ifill too much given how well the squad has gone without him. A signing like Krishna would add competition for places at least and is relatively low risk. He could be a revelation like Reira - who knows at this stage.

Fuck this stupid game

Billl Tuiloma and Storm Roux are both outstanding players from the recent NZ U20 squad. So who else is there from that squad that is A-League quality? I assume Fenton and Boyd were both there, but there has to be more.

Albert Reira and Jason Hicks have proven the gap between ASB Premiership and A-League isn't that vast for the top amateur players. Surely there must be some others that can make the grade. Roy Krishna is a bit older than the VPL striker, but both have similar goal scoring records from last year. Ernie Merrick did say he wanted a player who would start, I can't see either of them doing that. So that's why I reckon the local signing will be Justin Gulley.

Thats interesting.....Lujic was an AIS player in 2006??? but did drop off the radar. You wonder why no other A-League club has shown much interest in him. I trust Ernie...he seems to have good judgement in players. He might rate this Lujic guy.

Does Khrisna have a NZ passport?.....he has been here since 2007 so would be surprising if he didn't.

As for Krishna being underwhelming. I see where you are coming from but I think he would slot easily into our system. The trouble with imports is they rarely hit the ground running. kenny is still not bedded in and Stein has taken a season and a half to really show his full potential. A guy like Krishna has been around the local scene and would quickly offer us something IMO....look at how quickly Riera has done it. With our injury list we need instant imput.

I would like to see Ernie have a go with Hogg....maybe he can do the same job with him as he has with Lia. We have zero depth in wide defense.

Have raised it a few seasons ago but regarding our imports - I do think we should aim more at the UK players.  Or at least players who would fit into the Wgtn/NZ culture easily.  Other than Greenie and Ifill, Daniel is the only other import who got settled and lasted a few seasons (may be wrong here so please post others who have).

Wgtn is actually a very small city and while we may have cultural and ethnic diversity we don't have critical mass to provide extended support for players from different backgrounds.

Has anyone suggested that it might be Ian Hogg? With Fenton gone Hogg could do a similar job, albeit on the other flank, but Manny could switch to RB and Lia and Kenny could swap sides in the midfield to maintain the lopsided approach we've been using. Plus Hogg has already been in the squad before.

What about Luke Rowe

Hasnt Ernie been quoted as saying Boxall will fill in while fenton is out?

Pretty sure he picked up his NZ Passport in the 2013 season.

2 weeks?! That seems pretty random. Good news though.

OK, best of luck to them. I guess I was hoping for a more established player for Ifill who would almost certainly strengthen the starting lineup. I see he is only 26 which is a touch younger than I thought so has long term potential. I hope they both go better than I expect. Is there likely to be another player? I would assume that we are a fair bit under the salary cap.

We have Fenton's injury replacement & 1 roster spot available. Whether we have a visa spot depends on Krishna's status.

So John Irving as RB still a possibility if Krishna is a dinky die Koywoy?

I'm not sure who people were really expecting we would pick up. Certainly not someone of Ifills ability. If a player is without a club in January, theres probably a good reason i.e too old or plainly just crap. Ernie has had to sign what was available.

Good signing i reckon. I truly believe the only reason he hadn't signed with the club earlier came down to Herbitism.

Or that it was 5 years ago when he trialled.

Believe it isn't till 2015.
This from a story in June 2013:
However, Krishna's New Zealand residency application was granted earlier this month which means he is now unable to spend extended periods outside New Zealand. New New Zealand residents need to spend a minimum of 184 days in the country across the first two years if they wish to be granted permanent residence.

Must have a bit of money left under the cap from Ifill.

I remember watching a couple of the pre-season games that he trialled in a few seasons back, and he wasn't flash. Not that he was horrible, but I'm pretty sure he didn't score (or look like scoring) in either of them (against part-timers). Hopefully with a few more years under his belt, and a bit of coaching from Ernie/Greenie he can do better this time around? If he brings a bit of pace that will be handy as well, as that is something we don't have heaps of. I seem to remember him being sharp, but can't entirely remember.

Well if he is nice and modest we have to have him.... *sheesh*

If he was that 'definitively deserves an import slot' why did the other 9 teams not have a sniff? He is an import for any team in this league... If he is that good, why is he an "amateur" in a tinpot league in a backwater football league? He'd be signed and playing overseas no issues at all if your ascertation was true.

I disagree with your opinion.

I love going back to old posts to see how they stand up now... This gem is from early October regarding Albert Riera who, by many accounts, has been a stand out player for youz fullaz this season.

Riera's improved significantly since his first few games.  Back then he was more of a liability, especially when he tired and hacked players down.
