Yep but if they are a couple of hundred K under the cap this year because they haven't replaced Ifill perhaps they can spend a couple of hundred K over the cap net year.

I don't think that's the case. The decision to sign a marquee isn't Ernie's. It rests in the hands of the owners who have made it clear several times that they will not shell out for a marquee player.

I think Ernie is quite content with the team he's got at the moment, especially after adding Krishna in January.

We probably still need another centre mid option, we don't have much depth there.
29 Jan 00:52

I think we need a left back option who can free up many to midfield. Let lia and manny fight for the spot with riera. Don't think we will see it this season though.

Caira & Shermy? I love Manny but not sure his future lies in the midfield. He is a destroyer not a passer, something we are moving away from in the midfield.

Agreed. Quite happy with Manny at LB at the mo. Would prefer a different option in the midfield.

If we have spare cash. Then id say put it on a mooy move. He'd be great playing off riera. And its been some time since we got a good aus talent in our side. The last quality aus signing was .... dura...?

I have an amazing ability to find my way out of mazes. I'm pathological.

Anyone know if Waikato-Bay of Plenty goalie Andy McNeil signed from Hibernian in Scotland is any good?

Might be worth considering for the Nix - 26 years, a Southampton youth product and briefly second-choice keeper in their first team, a few seasons with Hibs in the SPL including playing in the League Cup win 2007; Scotland number one at youth level including UEFA u-19 final v Spain 2006 & FIFA u-20 World Cup 2007: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Andrew_McNeil

Sounds like he loves it here and is committed to staying (interview in the Edinburgh Evening News):

http://www.edinburghnews.scotsman.com/sport/football/hibs/ex-hibs-goalkeeper-andy-has-plenty-to-play-for-1-3237591

On his time in the Southampton youth team with Gareth Bale, Theo Walcott, Nathan Dyer:

Despite having probably the best DM combination in the league atm people still putting boot into Lia. We have dominated midfield the last 10 or so matches and yes a large part of that is The paramedic but as a combo they are excellent. Their screening and transition play is one of the reasons we are doing well. At present we should be looking for cover for Vinnie and Rierra. At this point they have their respective positions well and truly sewn up.

An import keeper, currently playing as an amateur, when we still have two other keepers on the books?

I think McKain and Muscat may have come after Dura that season, but you're right other than short term contracts (e.g. Vukovic, Reddy, Gameiro etc) the pool has been really thin since. Pantellis had big wraps when he arrived but we all know how that ended. Can't think of anyone else I'd want to put back into the squad. Interesting.

Give him 5 years ... ha
29 Jan 21:28

Muscat wasn't a "quality signing" at all... he was a punt that (spectacularly) paid off. McKain definitely, Pantelis yes but with massive risk attached (as was sadly proven).

We have to accept that we will rarely get "quality" aussies... any more than the sMelbin Webels will get quality NZ rugby players.

Albert Riera, Spanish 31 yr-old left-winger/left defender, has quit Turkish giants Galatasary after receiving 750,000 severance pay. (see Euro transfers latest).

Two Albert Riera's 4 the Nix?

What would their shirt names be? You couldnt have two Reira's on the pitch. You couldnt even have an 'A. Reira' + 'Reira'

This must be the most commonly misspelt name in HAL. Constantly referred to as "Reira".
It is Riera ("ree-aerror")

Actually, getting outplayed quite a bit these days

Well Riera Midfielder could be Vidal & Riera Left Back could be Ortega.

Articles like that ram home one of the big selling points about the A-League, if you come here your pay is guaranteed. Doesn't sound like much but there are plenty of horror stories like ones mentioned in the article.

When does the transfer window officially close?

VUW AFC - Victoria University Football for life

30 Jan 21:28

It's open a little longer than in Europe, so early Feb something like the 5th from memory

And if he's any good for the All Whites too...shame it's not like the 1970's when Brit imports became naturalised after a couple of years living here and were then eligible for the All Whites (Sumner , Almond, Keith Nelson, Malcomson, Woodin, Sandy Davie, Colin Walker, Billy Wright etc.) Many of them went on to play in the NSL for Aussie clubs too.

The Phoenix often seem to draft in keepers from outside the squad like Spoonley when they have injured or unavailable keepers so he could get a look in that way too...

That'll increase the premium on the import spots. Good move I think. It also means that any decent players that are not imports (Aussies or Kiwis) if they have any talent rather than just squad fillers, then they have a bit more bargaining power.

Would not surprise me to see Stein and Ifill get a 1 year extension and then at the end of next year, we have 4 spots free.

In other matters, FFA today confirmed that each Hyundai A-League club will have a limit of five (5) visa players for next season, 2014/15. In the following season 2015/16 the limit will be reduced to four (4) visa players.

Interesting for Stein in particular I reckon.

I could see us picking up Krishna next season then, pretty sure he wont be a visa player in time for the reduction.
17 Feb 20:08

Stein wants a two year deal. This makes it high risk for Phoenix if they give it to him.

Sorry Ryan but that is one I definitely do not see happening. Imports need to provide quality. Krishna does not.
