Except Merrick said he wants more goals from his wide guys and midfielders. He has a different player in Hernandez - a luxury this side hasn't had for some time, if at all. Pretty sure you will see a different style of Nix football come season k.o.

I'm sure Ricki wanted some more goals from his wide guys and midfielders. Its true that Hernandez is a step up in quality from any other guy we have tried in that role.

But the game plan and formation sound eerily similar to me, I don't understand why people are proclaiming it as a new style. The only thing he has said that sounds dissimilar is that once we get it up front he wants to play it around a bit rather than get it into the box quickly. I'll go along to the game tonight and have a look, I doubt I will learn too much from that. Will have to wait until the season starts but I am not expecting anything radically different from what we have had in the past.

Yep, if more short passing isn't a new style then I don't know what is. And I'm sure it's too early to tell if it's working just yet.

Please explain this comment.

The post that started this was had the following tactical information...

”If you have such a solid foundation right down the middle of the park you will be able to play an attacking game.

”We have a very good goalkeeper in Glen Moss, two rock-solid centre backs in Andrew Durante and Ben Sigmund, a strong defensive midfielder in Manny Muscat, Carlos Hernandez as an attacking midfielder and last season's second highest scorer Jeremy Brockie.

”I think we've got a solid spine which is supplemented by a range of good quality players.”

All players Ricki signed

Merrick said Wellington was likely to play in a 4-2-1-3 formation.

By far the most common formation for the last 4 years

”I've always liked a back four with two fullbacks who can attack and actually become wingers and two strong, uncompromising midfielders in the middle of the park,” he said.

Sounds like a Ricki gameplan to a tee for me. Where is the difference?

You forgot to consider other things he has said ie the short passing and getting wide players into scoring positions more, which sounds like a Brisbane roar style if you leave out all the other info - see I can do it too.

the part where we don't bypass the midfield with a big hoof.
the part where the players actually enjoy the environment, leading to more enthusiasm and energy on the field.

He may have lost it towards the end but that'll happen when you're losing and don't have any answers.

A big reason for us getting into the finals so often was because the players played above themselves due to the good environment. Ricki deserves some credit.

Is this a troll?

I can't believe for one minute that you really think that Ernie is going to play the same style of football as Rickie. Just listen to what Ernie has been saying since he has arrived. Go and look at some clips of how Victory played under Ernie. There is absolutely no similarity to what we got dished up under Herbert. The Nix under Herbert played longball/hoofball or what ever you want to call it. The primary objective was to get the ball down the field as fast as possible and then loft it into the box. That was it.....and muscle up in midfield.

From what we have seen and heard from Ernie the Nix will transition the ball through midfield and then hold and probe in the attacking third. Ernie said he wants his attackers to take their time, hold possession and probe. That is the complete opposite of Ricki. His aim was to get it into the mixer as quickly and as often as possible.

This. People forget very quickly we overachieved to reach finals 3 times based on an excellent team spirit. sure that went west last season to a degree but to say players did not enjoy is rubbish imo

Must be a senior contract if its for 3 years. Worried about how much game time he would get tho, kids need to be playing.

About what - Merrick's tactics? Players who might be signing? Football in general? Competitive yachting? Baking cupcakes? High-energy physics? Zororastrian theology?

Having spent some quality fanboy time with a few of the senior players recently.  I can confidently report that the environment/approach etc is, funnily enough, quite different under the new gaffer - after all, that's why we sacked riki, and signed someone new....

would it be possible to loan him to team wellington? im not sure how it works when it comes to a semi pro club and also if those silly rules would apply (the 2 week waiting period thing) if nix were to cancel the loan.

Nothing like a sweeping generalisation to kick off your contribution here.

ASB Premiership is 'amateur' so if Rufer signs a senior deal, he would be unable to play for TW. Only leagues we can realistically loan players into are the Aussie State Leagues, which are winter leagues.

Ernie's Report Card - after less than 8 weeks in the job

Fresh, open approach with media: A
Clear communication of desired style of play required to win and entertain: A+
Quickly released players who wouldn't fit the bill: A+
Trialled a whole bunch of young maybes: A
Signed some quality imports in key positions: B+ ('regista' or 'volante' playmaking deep midfielder still to come i hope)
Offered contracts to some young players with good potential: A
Seems to have energised team spirit: A

Really, hard to fault too much of what he's done in 7 weeks.

What I 'd like to see next:
Sign quality #6 (see above)
Plenty of warm up games pre-season
Get the FSW sorted so that we have more players in a professional set up coming through
Get clear on the TW relationship

Kotahitanga. We are one.

Wow. Insult our football knowledge all you like, but I will not stand for having our collective wisdom about cupcake baking and Zororastrian theology called into question!

Alex Rufer sounds the goods. Don't forget we signed Tyler Boyd as a 17 year old. Luke Adams still fits under the youth spot age, and I'm sure he'll get game time, so why not Rufer?

If Rufer has indeed signed, and we also nab this young right back or even Justin Gulley, everyone can at least admit that Ernie has faith in the country's youth!

But the aussie we signed is probably going to stop all the other supporters "identifying themselves" with the team - despite the potential it will be filled with kiwis

Perhaps we should demand a Labour-esque approach and mandate that certain positions can ONLY be filled by kiwi players.
