He knows what he's doing but the real question is - is he able to get the players he needs? So far, I'd say no.

The question becomes increasingly raised: does Ernie know what he's doing re: the back four and DM?

He has been upfront and explained what he wants, I've seen nothing to suggest he has moved away from those plans.

If you're quick and fit and unlikely to get game time in your preferred position ... nek minute ... FB

Nah Caira played LB for the under 20's in their warm ups I believe.

He's definitely not just a converted fullback.

He has been and he has said that he is struggling to get a DM. He'll fill the spot no worries but to what degree of quality is the question. There are thousands of imports that are DM, not all of them are good enough or come at the right price.

Grumpy old bastard alert

First post is a HUGE list of guys avaialble.

Some are obviously far too good, but some have already signed with A-league teams

Not the most accurate list. Noticed Sebastian Kehl there, he is still at Dortmund (saw him play the other weekend) and is still Dortmund's club captain.

Edit: Checked the source, dated March, and it was players coming off contract after the 12/13 season  - so probably has quite a few players that have re-signed with their current club.

Well, it seems the article used transfermarkt, could just use the website and use the advanced search function and troll through the list of players it spits out.

reading through that list some real quality. The dutch league is going through a bit of a change with huge numbers of players getting released as clubs try to downsize their squads. A few good options there:

Getting old but a DM with good pedigree
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Denny_Landzaat

A massive option in CM
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Orlando_Engelaar

With a name like that he must be perfect for us at LB

Been linked to Heart the past couple days. He was on trial at West Ham, looks a monster of a dude. Very much a Big Sam type player but for some reason didn't pick up a deal.

If we are throwing out names, his knee is probably stuff but Stephen Appiah is out of contract. Last played in 2012 in Serbia, being a World Cup year he might settle for games anywhere to try and get back into the Ghana team. Still would be a risk.

As a PSV fan, Orlando Engelaar was an absolute beast. If he came to the A-League he would thrive. He's a rangy player that can direct play off both feet and has an eye for goal but probably more CM/AM than DM which we're all aware of. If Melbourne Heart get him, it'd be a great coup.

Would be a huge signing. Doubt we could pull it off , though.

Hows about we try get Cameron Howieson loan as a CM. Did a good job in role at U20's.

Is your name 'TV' a reference to the in-joke about selling a tv on trademe? Or is it completely un-related?

Different coach, different tactics. I don't think it would have been that clearcut.

Ange would have been the clear deciding factor. Given victory were in the race to sign him, we had no chance.

is anyone else concerned that we have only signed one player of a-league quality?  i say only one because i think the jury's out on cunningham until we see him.

we were bottom last year so i don't think i'm wrong in assuming that we will need to be much stronger personnel wise to challenge for the playoffs

Trawled through a fair bit of this.....most of the good ones are way too old. Some very good players but 33+ is not what we are looking for.
Only really interesting one I found was Hans Mulder,  26 year old defensive midfielder. Dutch/ Spanish decent came throught the youth ranks at Zaragosa and then played 150 games in Dutch Div one and two. Mainly for RKJ Waalwijk....was at Willem last year in Div 2 but is currently a free agent. Ticks a few boxes, right age and a  DM. To play 150+ games in Holland means you are probably an OK player.....certainly good enough for A-league. Would he want to come to NZ though?

Please don't populate this thread with bullshit about acne, bad 80s bands etc, I click on here in the hope of unearthing some exceptional detective work by someone revealing our next signing. i got all excited witht he prospect of reading 22 new juicy posts only to find this crap. I also apologise to similar minded people because the irony of me posting this message is not lost on me either.

i find myself agreeing with you a lot lately napier phoenix
