He has been posting pictures from all over the place. I don't think the waterfalls in India means I-League.

Why doesn't it add up? We don't have Paston, Lochead, Sanchez, Smith, Lindsay or Totori any longer. I don't think any of them were on that big of a salary and Totori and Lindsay would have taken some payout which is still on the cap.

Against that Hernandez and Cunningham have come in which are both likely to be significantly higher than any of those who left. Plus Caira, Rufer, and the new keeper who will probably add up to 150k.

ok, sounds reasonable

i had assumed the kids would be on much much less

hang on, you forgot gameiro, pantelis, cernak, hogg and downey

italiano, caira, rufer and adams are just kids.  i agree that hernandez and cunningham would be more expensive than the departures

I believe the minimum salary is 45-50k, Caira might be on a bit more as well since he had other options. Pantelis was outside the cap because he was permanently injured (and covered by insurance). Gameiro and Cernak were only here for 2 months? Assuming that if they had an annual salary of 150k it would only be 25k in terms of the cap. Whatever the exact numbers, their short duration meant that they wouldn't have cost much. Hogg was not here long either and probably not on much. I did forget Downey (as I forgot Adams), no idea how much he was on. I think if we got another significant player, and were close to the cap last year, we would be close to it again.

Ernie does say that the Thompson signing is going to be a budget one as opposed to a football one which translates to 'I want to sign you but not for what you are asking'

I think Thompson probably would not have many option in terms of a spot let alone a starting spot if he was cut by the Heart and Brisbane were not interested. Its almost like we are a bit of a last chance saloon for him.

Matt did say he had options in Asia. I think he would prefer HAL due to family (new kid just recently).

More likely I don't want to sign you but you're all we can afford.

Well obviously. If there were better options available for the cash we have, we would try to sign them.

consider this

of all the players who came off contract at the end of the season merrick renewed none of them

bertos was renewed by the board prior and doesn't seem to feature in merrick's first team plans

in short - merrick doesn't like what we had

i would dare to venture that if muscat and lia were out of contract, that merrick would have also said bye bye to them and signed thompson in a flash

Good point Reg.

Edit: actually didn't I read that Merrick gave his blessing to Bertos being re-signed when they were negotiating?

Did anyone else forget that Bertos was still in the team? Can't really see him getting much of a run this season. Ifill, Kenny, Stein, Brockie, Boyd, Bertos and possibly Rufer all playing for the 3 forward starting positions. Bertos ain't looking good in the pecking order.

i'm not sure he would have because merrick prefers to have a young runner at right back and manny doesn't fit this bill

he'd be judged on his holding midfield attributes, which i don't think are up to scratch

it would have been harsh, i like manny

Thompson not offered contract

Looks like bertsch or watson are in the running apparently. Not sure where that leave stevens or gulley yet

Surely Bertsch will depend on his residency coming thru.

Merrick told him this arvo prefers the kids

Permalink Permalink

Preferring kids is one thing but he has got to be mindful of the lack of experience. I'm not sure I agree with him on the case. Thompson can be a starter from day one. Can Gulley? I know he has to think long term but he has enough signing in that age bracket to have taken care of long term.

No Thompson....interesting!!

Bet Ernie is onto someone else. A foreign DM perhaps? He did say there will be plenty of time to sign the two kids he's wanting. Still lots of training and preseason games so players have time to impress.

I wonder how Boyd is feeling....gets injured and then has loads of other kids impressing the coach. Mind you he is probably feeling a whole lot better than Leo. Bet you Ernie would have cut Leo. He did say he was happy they re-signed him just before he arrived at the club......but what else could he have said?

Nice change to have some competition for places at the club. Under Ricki you had the feeling that many players knew that they would never get dropped despite form or performance. There must be huge motivation to perform for those who will come off contract at the end of this season.....Ifill, Stein, Leo etc. The grim reaper(with a scottish accent) awaites

i think that's right JV, that rings a bell.

Dome said they discussed it with potential coaches - never confirmed by Merrick.  Let's be honest, he wouldn't have re-signed him.  He's not playing at right back and he's clearly not considered a starter in attacking sense (even though Merrick made all the right noises about rating him as an attacker).  I love Leo but he hasn't been truly effective for 2 seasons

I think Watson will get picked up.

I liked him at the u20 WC when he played seemed to have a decent touch and movement for a big guy and he will offer something a little different to what we have which I think is important.

It will be interesting to see what happens with Boyd. I think he was one of our best against Jordan and again at the WC (excluding Howieson) and seemed to be developing well.

I honestly think Brockie may struggle by the end of the year to get time behind Hysegems and possible Boyd who Merrick may try to develop.

Based purely on the fact i think Boyd is a little quicker and better with the ball at feet than Brockie... just needs his finishing.

He's biffed weight and by all accounts was impressive in games like the Newcastle one.  Hope he gets a chance.
