Pretty sure Thompson is the most-capped A-League player - so I wouldn't call him injury prone and I would think he could do better job as CM than Lia, Smith, Sanchez etc.
I'd try offering him a cheeky 2-year deal. Even his most fierce detractors will admit he is a decent squad member - and he doesn't take up an import slot - so why not trying to sign him???
I think that's it for me as well, still targetting a top quality Central Midfielder, but Thompson doesn't take an import slot, is an improvement on Smith/Lia in that role, and if we can't get an import then at least we have upgraded at the position.

It is interesting an Ozzy playing at the Phoenix is not an import player - but a Kiwi playing in an Ozzy Team is an import. They nust be worried we will flood their teams.

The league started with kiwi's not being imports but then when Asian Champions league spots came along it was changed. This is why Newcastle had Old and Brown and Perth had Leo, Plodder and Adrian Webster.
They should really make a 1 NZ player allowance, especially because it gives more chance to improve the league. Teams won't waste it on an anybody. Just means it allows more imports not from NZ/Aus

I think what he is saying the A League will always struggle to find good players at cheap prices if we continue to look overseas for them.
If Australia could look at NZ they would potentially have the option to sign good players that might play without the fear of losing an important import slot and save money.
Hogg is probably a good example of this with various rumours of A League sides apparently interested in him but nothing ever happening. If he wasn't an import slot he may of actually got a gig sooner. Good for NZ player development and for Aussie teams as they get a good player at a fraction of the cost of brining a foreigner in.
