Isn't gonna happen, they are signing Pablo Contreras as thier marquee.

Yeah thought Benayoun would be a bit out of reach.

does anyone else think the calibre of player we are linking, and sometimes even sign, is a fair chunk lower (as in quality) compared to other A league teams this off season?

Its been pretty obvious we don't do things the same way other clubs do especially in regards to marquee signings. It should have a better long term effect if all goes well.

Fuck this stupid game

Trying to be objective, I think our squad looks quite thin beyond the first XI.  And I think we're still pretty weak in defence.  I think we've got a lot of potential and we should be fairly potent in an attacking sense (although relying a lot on the Costa Rican's to turn us around), but I still think the areas we struggled in last year, defence and central midfield haven't really been improved.  We're relying a lot on Ernie's coaching ability to get the most out of this side.  I'm slightly nervous

I think I'm right in saying that nearly half our squad have played ten or less 10 A-League games

8, but one is a Costa Rican international & Boxall has MLS & NZ caps.

Total 23 professional matches at MLS - that's inexperienced

The point on Cunningham is that he's not played in the A-League before, it's likely he'll take a bit of time to get used to the league.  I think until we've seen him play in the A-League we have to be a bit careful thinking that he's going to carry our side.  The fact he's an international is great, but I don't think his club career is actually that impressive

Less than 20 matches at MLS - that's inexperienced

Ernie spoke about having an experienced spine to the team and having the young whippets on the flanks, the squad does reflect this. I still would like a quality midfielder, so its a choice of Manny or Lia to partner him but it is looking very unlikely that will happen.

I agree that's what he's done but it makes me nervous relying on so many unproven players.

Actually, the thing I can't quite work our is how we're going to end up close to the cap with so many young players in the squad - many on their first ever professional contracts.  Our first XI must be on top dollar which I don't think a lot of them deserve really.

There wasn't many proven options for the LB/RB in the market, so we have had to take the risk on youth to fill those positions. Would have been nice to retain Lochhead but Ernie was pretty clear in that he didn't suit the style he wanted to play.

We have the cash available for the import midfielder, just have to find him. We may end up signing Watson/Gulley/Bertsch instead, if we need to make sure we get over the 80% (2 mil) minimum spend. But I would think we would already be over that mark, as we still have a number of players from the Terry era who have been re-signed and I doubt they would have taken pay cuts.

So what you're saying is, Cunningham is the Costa Rican Clapham?

I am excited that for the first time in our history we are not relying on the 'tried and tested' A-League players who are past it and we know won't take us anywhere.  I am excited that we will finally have an energetic feel to the team.  I am excited that finally we might have a decent style of play rather than pass wide, cross to the first defender or over top of everyone, I am excited that we might finally have a back up plan if Plan A fails, I am excited that we have a coach who is not scared to change things up, I remember him pulling players in the first half for the Tards, I am excited that finally things are different!

I am realistic that this season will have ups and downs and we will make errors, however I hope that our long term future is much brighter than it's ever been...

...shit, this off season has been too long, I am becoming positive, bring on the season so my angst can come back!!!

I assume signing Clapham has been mentioned but i went back over the 10 pages or so and couldn't find it, but would he not be worth a place in the squad. Comfortable on the ball, good distributor and excellent set piece taker.

And I'm sure he wouldn't command a large salary.

Played well in the game yesterday by all accounts and recently in Saudi Arabia and is only 26.

Why doesn't it surprise me that someone with a Peter Griffin avatar should make the obligatory "sign Clapham" post.

Right - so "Stuff's" 9.5/10 was generally deemed excessive?

A 9.5 does would tend to indicate he had an absolute blinder...

F*ck - what I have missed here? Is signing Clapham considered an 'in-joke'?
