Phoenix Transfer Speculation 2013/14

I went to the ACFC vs Nix game, and i can say that, in that one game solely, Riera is much better than Lia, in term of both ball retention and distribution...I can't recall the guy losing the ball / missing the pass much...

In saying that...it doesn't mean Riera is good, probably because Lia was just aweful in that game.

And also as others have mentioned here, i'm not sure whether he's worth taking an (our last) import spot.

Would rather have Chris James than this guy (sorry to bring this discussion back again)...

Is this the best we can do ? Jesus........

Ivan = Moses: Riera = Jesus? No wonder ACFC's defence is staunch.

Besides Hernandez who is still overweight we havent signed anyone decent, cunningham? he isnt even THAT fast but hey never know once the season comes round, but they need to sign someone in the middle who will snap a few people in two

we already have soemone in the middle who will snap a cunt in half, what we need is a decent passer who is comfortable under pressure.

Riera is a left footer. He covered LB for City and got a couple MOM matches in that position. If you had said to me 'Lets look at him for LB" I think that would not be a silly move. As a DM.... I don't think he is the player we need/looking for. He plays laterally a lot and is not really a ball winner.

On the other hand he's a scrapper with a good engine. And as a DM he doesn't make a habit of giving the ball away in tight positions - unlike Clapham e.g. Apart from Ivan, he's the first name on Ramon's teamsheet.

Berlanga is a better footballer. Granted they are different positions.

He does have a good engine but we don't need a scrapper or a grafter as that's pretty much what Lias skill set is although a poor version of it.

In an ideal world, we need a Ryan Nelsen type player. All he has to do is plug a hole, intercept, break up and knock it off left or right to an open man. Nothing flash, nothing mental, just basic but extremely good at doing the basics. Nelsen was never flash but he was always in the right place at the right time and never took more than a sideways touch. I guess kinda like Mark Richardson at cricket. Not flash, keep it simple to what you are good at and be good at it.

Hey! Dani Sanchez rocked in his first season.
On a lighter note, this is why ACFC were afraid to play us - they knew that they'd be prone to poaching. :)

I agree that Bertsch may not be good enough (based only on highlights of the ACFC game and nothing else) but the reports on here is that he has the potential. So if he is young, cheap and very soon to be non-visa player, why not get him in now? Can't be worse than Lia. Is he ready to make a difference today? I can't answer that honestly so I do not know but that extra years experience will make him a better footballer for when he can be signed as a Kiwi.

What's wrong with Hogg? Signed for Waitakere not wanted by City? Still on  Allwhite's radar (under suspension).

What happened during his Phoenix stint as I can't recall any announcement for or against his suitability as LB?

This is an interesting question.

How does a guy go from being the form LB in ASBP and developed into one of the more consistent players in the team, to the AWs, to the Phoenix then be in utter oblivion of Waitakere. You have to ask what has gone wrong surely. Ernie wanted pacey backs, Hogg has wheels to burn. Ricki was picking him in the AWs and Phoenix, now can't even get in the NZ A team or the AW team. Was one of the better performed players under Ramon at ACFC, now is a Temple scrap.

Reading too much into it?

Just watched a video from the city v phoenix game from city's website and although it is only highlights he didn't feature much in it which surprised me,

I remember thinking ACFC numbers 4 and 16 had great games in the midfield, but I didn't know their names.

By the same token, if they were in the A League, they would lose more than a few players because of import quotas anyway.

I count 8 with Bale, Dickinson, Billen, Berlanga, Reira, Krishna, Iwata, Tade.......

Without looking, 4 would probably be Chris Bale. He would do ok in a Phoenix shirt I think. A bit more starch than Riera and skill set than Lia.

When they worked out how to use gaming-trust funds to make themselves the Manchester City of the ASBP.

that is what tends to happen with bigger clubs in most leagues. However, remember most have not signed and a majority that have aren't former city players but a selection from around nz.

If Ernie sees something in this guy Riera then no harm in giving him a trial. From a casual observers position people playing the Riera role don't seem to do much in a flashy way. But they are super vital in the overall running of the team. If, as someone has pointed out this guy hardly ever gives the ball away, distributes OK and covers lots of ground then that's exactly what we need. Look at how Flamini has transformed the Arsenal midfield play doing the same job. Plus he is older/experienced so won't be overwhelmed playing away against say Victory.(and he could cover LB)

OK he maybe an underwhelming selection and less than what we hoped for but if Ernie thinks he can do a better job than Lia then that's fine by me.

Doom post says Rufer will be missing in October because of U17 commitments. So with Gulley going to RB we now have only three players...Carlos, Lia and Muscat to cover three CM positions. I reckon if Riera does not have a crap trial we will sign him.

Not sure where you're coming from there. I haven't seen much made of the fact he's come from ACFC apart from one post from martinb.

I just meant the way all the posters were talking about the ACFC players on the last page like they were picking them out of a catalogue

His previous clubs were lower league Spanish ones, so I would think he would get a lot of skepticism on the forums if he came straight from there. The clubs appear to be an even lower level than the Spaniards that Adelaide have signed were playing at.

Hmm, everyone has gotten pretty excited about someone we've signed out of the Bolivian first division

One that was playing for Costa Rica in World Cup qualifiers at the time. He would have probably got similar treatment if he wasn't.

Massively excited about the A-League season.  Found an official streaming service here in the UK which means I should be able to watch plenty of games especially as I'm now up a lot in the middle of the night with my little one.
I'm also massively excited about seeing us play again.  But viewed dispassionately I'm not convinced by our squad at all, and apart from Cunningham's 10 international appearances I guess I'm a bit nervous about whether he'll improve us to the level we need to get to to make the top half.  The majority of his games are in Costa Rican football, I don't know a lot about the level but the team he played for was a lot smaller than the one Hernandez did before he came to Victory.

I choose to be hopeful about him though, rather than skeptical.

I'm worried that we'll still have a big hole in our central midfield, and with younger/inexperienced fullbacks we may not get away with it as much as we did ('nt) last year. But if things go well, and depending how other teams shape up, you never know what can happen in this league - every team has their holes.

An official online streaming service? You might actually get better coverage of the A league in the UK, than we do in NZ.

I'm a bit surprised that we haven't heard more from the staff at the club about how good he's looked at training and he hasn't appeared much in pre-season.  That got me a bit nervous I suppose.  As we saw on the weekend behind our front line attacking options are pretty limited
