If not James, we will need a someone better than James, probably at Ifill's quality (3-4 years back), who could make an immidiate impact and has the ability to turn our season around.  How many players we've ever signed? and how many as successful as Ifill's signing?  Based on Ernie's signings so far, good luck to Ernie.

I would love to have James here...seems like an obvious option to go for

The only real outstanding successes (Would walk into any other team) over the years have been Ifill,  Dura,  McKain, Smeltz, Rojas Brown Paston  and maybe Manny Brockie and Kosta. outside of that any other players we have had here have been solid or journeymen at best. This shows the difficulty in attracting to our fair city. It is an issue beyond $$$'s and it applies to Kiwis, Aussies and Imports.  Are there others I have missed?

Think that's a fairly fair list. Aloisi & Felipe were pretty handy in season 1. Vukuovic was great for us, but only on a short term contract... can't think of many more.

The other player I wouldn't rule out is Mr. Clapham...

It'll be Clapham.

I can't wait for the day that Clapham either retires or gets a contract overseas, just so I don't ever have to read his name in this thread again.

Just to be a nasty troll... if Ricki were still coach, would he have signed Chris James?

Fairly easy to answer with another question:
When Ricki was coach, did he sign Chris James?

Allegedly

Good destructive midfielder but hardly a box to box player and goal scorer

+3 'cause I live in ChCh and The Dragons need him!

Actually, getting outplayed quite a bit these days

the dragons can have him, we need as ernie says a box to box midfielder with defensive abilities, smart playmaking skills and the pace and energy to out last out run everyone else - is he going to find this in NZ (unlikely) in Aus (pretty sure he wont) does this mean e'll end up with some journeyman hack from aus (almost guaranteed)

Do we know who is still available in the Aust market for January transfer window anyway? I have to say I haven't heard of anyone 'most likely'.

Another question that's been playing on my mind is, what happened to Dani Sanchez since he was cut loose, and more importantly, if the decision to let him go was premature? Or was it just a matter of freeing up a visa spot / salary spot?

Dani was never the answer from what I remember. Too lightweight, never imposed himself.

In view of the need for goals, wouldn't trying to get Chris Killen - proven goalscorer, Wellington boy - on a short-term loan from his Chinese club be a good idea?

Chongqing FC have been relegated so he will be looking for another club (Can't have foreign players in China Two)

A last hurrah in his hometown for Killen then. Not even a loan deal required. Sounds good to me.

No prob with Killen but we have one space dont we and we need a midfielder of quality.

One option is Rostyn Griffiths on loan from China?

Not a box to box midfielder, neither is Paartalu or Salley. Looking at Aussies overseas, there isn't any one that stands out as the instant impact we need.

Tim Payne would be my choice, I think he is in his last year of his contract.

Paartalu is proven A league Quality DM who also scores goals, many of them absolute screamers. Scores a goal every 8 games or so. While maybe not a "box to box" in the Tim Brown sense if we had an opportunity to grab him, I would be say yes please!

Agree

Tim Payne is not the answer for me. Doesn't get forward and does not score goals. I also tend to think if he is coming back here, its game over in England for him.

Paartalu would be a great aquisition

Killen is a DM. Everybody knows that.

If you bring in Killen and Portaloo then you need to release someone. Looking at the team, no one is a candidate that I can see so you would get one of the other.

Do we really need a midfielder or a striker? Ernie says midfielder, I think striker. Maybe I do watch the wrong game.

Striker please.

Tend to agree JV, just someone mentioned portaloo. If he was available I would get him regardless of need. IMO he is of a quality that if the stars aligned you would grab. But yes we need a clinical 20 goal a season striker a poacher someone who scores all his goals from inside the penalty area
