From Tribalfootball:
Following on from the capture of Jon McKain, Wellington Phoenix are set to pull off their second major signing coup in the form of Hartlepool United attacker Joel Porter.
Timisoara defender McKain agreed terms over a Bosman deal with Phoenix last week and fellow Australia international Porter is set to join the A-League club in a similar deal.

Like McKain, Porter is at the peak of his career and has chosen to join Phoenix ahead of more lucrative offers to remain in Europe.

What's a Bosman deal?

End of contract so the club no longer own the players registration. It mean no transfer fee. That's how Blackburn picked up Ryan Nelsen for the best free transfer ever.

Its no longer a problem.

It sounds likely lads, but please remeber that Tribal Football is only slightly above the 4-4-2 Rumour Mill in the credibility stakes.

442 rumour mill in overdrive again, very hard to believe we will sign all these guys, would be awesome though.

Wellington Euro Trip signings [RUMOUR]

Wellington Phoenix will sign Hartlepool's Australian striker Joel Porter as well being in talks with the League One side's veteran defender Robbie Elliott whose previous clubs include Newcastle, Sunderland, Bolton and Leeds.

The Nix are close to signing N.Z. Port Vale's All White right back David Mulligan, and Fulham off-contract Kiwi Simon Elliott.

Ivan Vicelich the All Whites veteran has already indicated to Pignata that he wants to play out his career in Wellington and may sign for the coming season.

4/10

- Tony was quoted in the paper last week as having two more signatures from the European jaunt, so 3/5ths of those would be untrue.
- The Porter thing has now come from 4 different sources, that is usually a sign that it's happening.
- My order of likely to least likey for the others ?  MUlligan, R. Elliott, Ivan, Si Elliott.

As much as I hate to do it, I have to agree with HN on this. Althuogh all four sources may use the same original source. Like www.yellowfever.co.nz for example. We all know that that is the one true soure of transfer speculation.
Porter sounds like an almost done deal, Mulligan is a distinct possibility as is R Elliot, however I think Ivan and Simon have at least a couple more season left in Europe first.
Fingers crossed though.

Its no longer a problem.

if you go on hartlepools website it says he scored quite a few hatricks

With Fulham likely to get relegated I think Simon Elliot will stay there. A lot of there "starts" will leave to get Prem football. Championship next season will be good for Si to get him back to his best.

Its no longer a problem.

Vital Football says:

Joel Porter arrived from his native Australia in 2003 with 112 games already under his belt including scoring 6 times in 4 games for the Australian national side. Neale Cooper offered the striker a short term spell after unsuccesful trials at Sunderland and Wigan Athletic. Joel struggled in his early days at Victoria Park but scored his first goal in the telivised game with Burton Albion in the FA Cup. Porter went on to score 4 more times in his first season with Pools including a goal in the Play-Off semi final against Bristol City.

Neale Cooper awarded him an 18 month contract in January 2004 and Joel benifitted from a full pre season before the 2004/05 campaign. During this season he formed a formidable patnership with Adam Boyd and scored 15 times, his good form won him the 2004/05 Supporters` Player of the Season.

Porter then suffered a serious knee injury which kept him out of the Hartlepool first team for 10 months as Pools were relegated to League Two. Porter returned to the first team in the 2006/07 season scroing 4 goals in 15 starts, however he picked up another serious injury which kept him out for a further 5 months. Porter returned to first team action in April and featured in Pools last six games, scoring once.

"Joel Porter is a pacy striker who has suffered a series terrible injuries in the past couple of years, he may seem injury prone but is a big threat up front when he is in the side"
I like the "pacy striker" and "big threat up front bit", but I wonder how much damage those injuries have done to him?  A major knee injury and a medial ligament problem are both the kinds of problems which can rob a player of his speed.

EDIT:  Not so worried about the injuries now.  Just read a recent Hartlepool match report which said his "pace and movement" troubled the opposition defence.

interesting stuff, probably not the first thought for most of us prior to the rumours that started in January, I expect after the Elrich experience the club will have looked closely at both his injuries and his attitude

his cv doesn't exactly scream "Marquee" , so i wonder if that indicates someone else is also in the frame?

interesting times

I would be happy with Joel Porter...as long as he is fit. Remember Smeltzy was playing in England at a similar level and didn't really set the world on fire. Then we got him back to the Phoenix and he was one of the best strikers in the A-League last season.

Get Porter over here early. Give him a good preseason buildup and he'll fire up. Remember its a hell of a motivation playing infront of 12,000 in the ROF. Compare that to playing on some cold wet mudheap in Hartepool, in front of the groundsman and his dog.

I think we have to be realistic. We would all love to have a bigname striker sign for the Phoenix. But you are talking millions of $$$. John Aloisi has just gone to Sydney for over $1 million AUD and he is a player that wouldn't get a look in the EPL. Also he's not the sort of player to win matches single handedly.    what do we know about Robbie Elliot????????

Erm, No.

Porter has played in League One, Smeltzy only got to the conference.

Who have they missed? Ryan Nelsen and Chris Killen, who else is up there. Pretty easy way to start a transfer rumour:

How much did Dwight Yorke cost SFC though? can't have been any more than $1 million... If we signed someone with that pedigree at around the same price you would expect the club to get big returns in the form of increased ticket sales, media coverage, sponsorship, and merchandise sales. It is totally worth it, why do you think SFC go after a marquee every season?

The Sunday Times (Perth newspaper) is still saying that David Tarka is Wellington Phoenix bound as the Glory are stuffing him around by offering him a performance based contract only due to his on going injuries.
I just wonder if the Phoenix are holding off on Sigmund's signature until they get an answer from Tarka?

^^all good Jag.

On Tarka, what is up with the Nix and the players with knee injuries? Elrich, Porter, Tarka...

He is a big risk as News said, but one that could pay off if he comes right. Could come quite cheap too (because of injury risk).

Just read the article, its a good read. Apprently we have offered him over 150k!!... there is no doubt he will sign for that, sounds like Perth have offered him crumbs. Hope Siggy gets picked up by another A-League club if not us, although he would be classed as an import in Aussie which doesn't help his cause.

It looks like he does well in tight spaces and scores from some pretty interesting places which would hold him in good stead in the A-League.

Couldn't agree more Critical_Lemon. The exact sort of striker we need IMO to really create a goal out of very little. Be very interested to see if he can come over.

Apparently he has been mostly injured the last couple of years and hasn't really performed
