pledging future doesnt mean anything anymore, what was bertos saying befor his transfer? he wanted to stay at perth. we'll see what happens, could go either way

Bertos' contract had finished, he was a free agent at the end of last season.
If we wanted Kwasnik we would have to buy out his contract.

You seem to be arguing that we need to play with two strikers up front though.
Correct - our midfielders are providers not scorers. Ferrante has scored 2 goals in 41 A-league games, Gao 1 in 7, Bertos 1 in 35 and Daniel 2 in 17 (excl. penalties). That makes a total of 6 goals in 100 A-league games - they aren't goal scorers. If we had a couple of midfielders who were consistent scorers you wouldn't need to play 2 up front - we don't so we do need to play 2 goal scoring strikers up front.
You can't play 2 up front and also have all of Gao, Daniel, Bertos and Ferrante on the pitch at the same time.  I doubt we can sign somebody more deserving of a place in our starting XI than any of them.

Correct again - who starts out of Gao, Bertos, Daniel and Ferrante will be based on form, formation etc etc.

You can bet that most teams will stick a man on Smeltz this season and, unless we have a strike partner who can regularly score and will therefore drag defenders away from Smeltz, our most potent scorer will be taken out of the game.

You can stack the midfield all you like but someone has to stick the ball in the net.

the amount of goals our midfielders have scored are both relevant and somewhat irrelevant at the same time, the basis of what i'm saying is that they have been playing as sole providers, who don't get into goal scoring situations that often, if we play 4-3-3 or anything involving have daniel bertos and gao on at the same time as dodd and ferrante, with smeltz upfront, gao daniel etc are going to get into more goal scoring opportunities and therefore sore more goals. unless someone wants to research what formations they played in and prove me wrong, they would most likely have ben playing as providers to a front 2

Find proof he has signed a contract, then we'll admit defeat.

My info is that he was entitled to a further year with CCM, as he triggered it by playing a certain number of games last season. But he did not have to take it, and word is that he signed with the Nix officially yesterday, earning himself a decent payrise in the process (not that it was hard with what he was on at CCM).

Good signing IMO.

so if Jaza's perception is accurate , it sounds like a reverse of the Porter situation i.e.  in this case the player (not the club) gets to decide whether he comes to us

Interesting disucssion on the Kwasnik rumour on the Mariners forum.

I'm guessing his signing will be announced Monday / Tuesday to coincide with the public release of the season tickets but then again who knows ...

Kwas is yours those on the know in our forum are saying the deal was signed yesterday.

He is good honest and very hard working player ( bit like El**ch) no he is hard working guys, and so on you got a good one there. IMO better coming on to the ball from out wide coming in at goals at pace.

Well done YF good buy IMO.

It's funny how people are saying "Smeltz is going to have a man on him this season." So teams didn't play with center backs against us last year then? He always had people marking him last season, it won't be any different this year, except perhaps that sides might be a little bit more afraid of him, if anything that's a good thing as it will open up space for our other attacking players. It would be foolish of teams to pay too much attention to him, and as he showed last year, all he needs is one or two chances a game because he is absolutely deadly inside the box. The standard of defending in the A-League just isn't high enough to prevent him from getting a few chances each match, especially with that wonderful midfield we are going to line up behind him.

As for Kwasnik, if it's true that he's signed I'm definitely happy about it, probably about as good as we could expect given the circumstances. I'd have loved to have had Porter (now he probably would have been worth trying up front in a 442). Who knows, maybe Ricki will give Kwasnik a shot starting up front with Smeltz. Certainly wouldn't hurt to see how they go preseason. My gut just tells me that we don't need another starting striker, I'd rather watch the trifecta of Gao, Bertos and Daniel all operating behind Smeltz.

Kwasnik's signing "confirmed" in today's Sunday Star times - according to a "Mariners source"..

Article on page B15, can't find the article on the website.

Love this comment from that Mariners forum...

"I think we can live without Kwassie TBH, whilst El**ch (IMHO) is an unfit, idle bludger who I predict will fade to the bench after 6 games (should be in the prediction thread), we have cover for Kwassies position and if Wellington offerred him reasonable $$ - good luck to him.

What today showed is that our squad is screaming for a player of Tommy's quality, his loss is massive.

Mind you, if Kwas has gone for sure, we need another scapegoat. All clubs have one and I vote El**ch."

They're on to him!

Im glad Kwasnic is joining the Phoenix! good signing!

He might not start, but at least we have cover for smeltz. Costa and Draper will come on well this year as well.

Yeah, but hopefully he'll do well in a supportive atmosphere. Right guys?
Theres not overly much pressure on him to succeed like there was with El**ch. He may enjoy it, sounds like the Marinators have high expectations and like to stick it in.

i think the comments about swapping scapegoats are quite unfounded really, for a start El**ch deserved what he got, he was lazy and admitted to the media he simply used us, and all we got out of him was one great goal. Kwasnik has done so much more for the mariners

He's scored more goals than El**ch and does better crossing. Kwasnik would do well here and I believe make a good foil for Smeltz.
Proud to have attended the first 175 Consecutive "Home" Wellington Phoenix "A League" Games !!

He's still always been the scapegoat for a lot of CCM fans it seems.

I'm not calling him a bad player.

How can you say that he crosses the ball better than El**ch? El**ch didn't get a single cross in last season so how can you make a comparison?

I'm going out on a limb and making a really bold prediction - Kwasnik will sign with the Phoenix for the coming season.

5th tier English side?  That's a non-pro league right?

Some Semi Pro, some pro. Some teams have full time squads some don't.  It dependws where teams came from to some extent, as sides that have dropped from league 2 seem to still be more professional than a side that has come up from the Conference North or SOuth.

Thought it was worth reflecting on the Nix transfers - in and out.

You would have to say congratulations Tony and Ricki on a job bloody well done - and we still have 2 spots in reserve !

Wellington Phoenix

Re-signed Vince Lia (2 years)

In Leo Bertos (2 years - Perth Glory), Andrew Durante (2 years - Newcastle Jets), Jon McKain (2 years - from Politechnica Timisoara, Romania*), Leilei Gao (MyPa, Finland), Troy Hearfield (2 years - Newcastle Jets), Ben Sigmund (1 year - Auckland City, NZ), Adam Kwasnik (Central Coast Mariners)

Out Steven ODor (released), Cleberson (released), George Paladini (released), Ahmad El**ch (Central Coast Mariners), Felipe (released), Kristian Rees (short-term player, released), Jacob Spoonley (released), Steven Old (Macarthur Rams, NSW Premier League), Ross Aloisi (retired), Royce Brownlie (released)

yep WB , makes good reading - we come out on the right side of the ledger by quite a margin

I'll miss see Felipe's skill with the ball and whilst durante and  McKain leave Rees behind in the skills/mobility department I'll miss his uncompromising  approach

but those new lads should soon become crowd favourites

only 12 days til we can see them in action at the RoF

A bit of a teaser from Ricki -  a quote from the Four Four Two "Let Me Entertain You" article ( https://au.fourfourtwo.com/news/80471,herbert-let-me-entertain-you.aspx)

""But with the signing of people like Adam Kwasnik, Leo Bertos and Troy Hearfield we've a number of attacking options in that group, as opposed to what we had last year.

We've certainly moved forward in that area and we haven't spent all the money yet. So, yes, we're looking forward to year two, I think it could be good for us."

Obviously there is more money available within the salary cap and in the player aquisition budget and Ricki is still considering another attacking player. This is consistent with Tony P's comment on Sunday's Total Football Show that the 2 available squad spots were being held for possibly another attacking player and / or another full back.

Surprised with Smeltz, Covs, Kwasnik, Costa and Herfield he thinks we may need another attacking player but maybe he is still looking for another out and out striker to partner Smeltz as opposed to an attacking midfielder.

Probably reading too much into Ricki's comment but I wonder if he is closing in on another signing.
