I think it's likely to be Elliot and Brockie, but wasn't Brockie linked with a Danish club after the Olympics?  It would be amazing to get Chris James on loan as marquee player for the rest of the season (on loan so he could go straight back to Tampere and not have to search for a new European club).

I doubt they're looking for any defensive players, but if they are then John Tambouras could be an option.

I'd settle for two strikers.

With some serious "punch" up front we might have a dog's show of getting out of this hole we're digging.

Three genuine strikers would be a nice luxury!

But it wouldn't help our clueless midfield...

I see 33 year old Robbie Savage is available for a loan at Derby, what about him as our Marquee. If he could stay on the feild long enough, he'd add the bit of steel we have been missing!!
Proud to have attended the first 175 Consecutive "Home" Wellington Phoenix "A League" Games !!

Considering nearly every story on the Gold Coast side has suggested that is the case, you are hardly the first.

He's off mate, I betcha, signed already, seeing out the year with the nix then off!!! Gold coast will win the league first up, already have Ryan Giggs for 5 or 6 games, mate it will be amazing at Skilled Park Robina. They are also getting dispensation for two extra players sdo they can be at a level pegging with the rest of the teams, as they will be a new francise

I will also add that as A-League sides are not allowed to approach a contracted player until October, if he has already signed then a chunk of the much vaunted money will be going in fines for an illegal approach.

Didn't a few weeks ago, Tony P or another board member say they were hoping to resign some players. Has he resigned anyone yet?

Anyone got a list of the players whos contracts are up at the end of the year?

Smeltzy off??? I just heard it throuh somebody at work so unsure if it is completely true. Anyone know anymore on this?

Gold Coast may have mega bucks behind them but they are also restricted by the same salary cap as everyone else. I doubt Giggs is going there, Dodd can't be approached yet and Smeltz is "Phoenix til he dies" (I hope).

Its no longer a problem.

FRUSTRATED Gold Coast United head coach Miron Bleiberg has hit out at the Football Federation Australia visa player rules that have forced him to abandon his quest to sign Kiwi super kid Jason Haine...

To add to Bleiberg's dismay, Haine is now on the wanted list of the Phoenix.
https://www.goldcoast.com.au/article/2008/09/12/16203_gold-coast-soccer.html
The crack Kiwi under-23 international almost single-handedly kept Surfers Paradise in the top flight with 13 goals in nine games and should immediately be head-hunted by Gold Coast United coach Miron Bleiberg, according to Surfers supremo Keith Garland.

Rival coach Adem Poric, who played in the English Premier League with Sheffield Wednesday, agreed after Haine, 21, starred in the 1-0 win over his Palm Beach side last Tuesday night...

"A lot of players on the Gold Coast are kidding themselves and think they are better than they are, but this kid is the real deal," said Poric. "He's different class to the rest and would walk into the A-League."

Are we talking about the same Jason Hayne that was a bit part donkey for Waitakere last year.

Lord give me strength....

Let's remember that the Phoenix beat the top side in that comp 8 nil or something in pre-season

When did Hayne play for the U23s?   If he is at the Phoenix next year I'll eat my hat

I think this Gold Coast side are going to provide a great deal of amusement for the rest of the league, the phrase more money than sense is starting to come to mind.

He wasn't exactly setting the grass on fire for Waitak against the NRFL XI on Saturday....

Gold Coast United will tomorrow unveil former Juventus goalkeeper Jess Vanstrattan as the A-League expansion club's first signing.

Coast coach Miron Bleiberg and billionaire club owner Clive Palmer will reveal the signing amid a series of announcements at their Skilled Park headquarters.

A free agent since he was released by superclub Juventus in June, Vanstrattan is keen to make his name again in Australia after seven incredibly frustrating years in Italy.

The Gosford-born stopper seemed set for a huge senior career after a starring turn for the Australian Joeys at the 1999 under-17 World Cup when they lost the final to Brazil in a penalty shoot-out.

He also played regularly for the Young Socceroos with long-time coach Ange Postecoglou rating him extremely highly.

Vanstrattan enjoyed a season with the Northern Spirit in the old NSL before signing with Verona but in all his time in Italy -- which also included loan stints with Carrarese, Ancona and Juve -- he made only 10 senior appearances.

The 26-year-old started his first and only game for Juventus in their friendly against Melbourne Victory at the Telstra Dome in May, where he let in one goal -- a Carlos Hernandez special -- in their 4-1 win.

His signing with the Coast is his second attempt to play in the A-League after his signing with the Newcastle Jets was blocked by Verona in 2006.

Bleiberg will also announce Vanstrattan's goalkeeping back-up and the fledgling club's goalkeeping coach tomorrow, more than 10 months before their A-League debut in a 10-team competition.

Iron ore baron Palmer, Queensland's richest man who has large business interests in China, is set to reveal an initiative of his own after arriving at the team's home ground via helicopter.

Well, to be fair, he was trying to displace Buffon in the side.

Permalink Permalink
over 17 years ago · edited about 5 years ago · History

He wasn't trying to displace Buffon until he signed for Juve in 2007. The rest of the time was:

2001 - 2004 at Verona -  0 appearances
Loan at Carrarese in 2004 - 1 appearance
2004 - 2008 at Verona - 8 appearances
Loan at Ancona in 2007 - 1 appearance
2007 -2008 at Juve - 0 appearances

Hardly what you'd call a first team regular anywhere he's been!

U-17 World Cup final... got a hand to every one of Brazil's penalties but never quite enough to push them on to the post or round.  Impressive display.

Assume that since 16 his wrists have got stronger.

He played against the Victory earlier this year.  Conceded one, but didn't have much to do.

Im not sure if this has already been covered, but Steve Fitzsimmons has reportedly signed with the gold coast side. It said he was a former knights player. I've never seen him before. Just wondering what peoples views were on him? is he any good?

just to be/have been in the Juve squad, you have to rule. Therefore, he rules.
