You can spend all the money you want but Miron will still be the coach.

I wouldn't bet against the move, Agostino is in his twilight years and he hasn't exactly done much so he could be out next season. Adelaide is also just that bit nicer than Wellington but that's just my opinion.

I concur... having just spent seven yrs in Qld lol

Different heat though - dry heat down there, similar to ours...

The arse pain down south (SA/VIC/Sth WA) is that it can be 40 one day and 18 the next in Qld, if it's 40 one day, the next will be either 39,40 or 41

And before someone says it, I know that Adelaide broke their record for consecutive days over forty last year... seven or eight days if I recall?

Wellington is about as dry as the harbour compared to SA.

Guess I'm just a bit of a masochist and really dig the heat in that part of the world.

Lets not forget...

Whilst we're collectively sh*tting ourselves at the prospect of losing Smeltz, Daniel, etc to other clubs (and justifiably) I would be very surprised if our mgmnt team aren't talking to other players also... they're not stupid - they know that nothing is definite until the pen hits the paper, and will be looking at contingencies should our squad be weakened, not to mention strengthening some existing holes we may have...

So this is Gold Coast's squad so far:

(GK) Jess Vanstratten (Juventus)
(GK) Scott Higgins (Adelaide Utd)
(MID) Steve Fitzsimmons (Palm Beach)

[edit] Current Squad (Actual or Potential)

Former Socceroos goalkeeper Mark Bosnich is reportedly being chased by Gold Coast United. Palmer has indicated to his manager Miron Bleiberg to hunt for Chinese talent for his first playing list, targeting current Sheffield United defensive midfielder Sun Jihai as a first signing. [14]. Ex-FC Porto junior and current Melbourne Knights midfielder Cameron Watson is also said have been closely watched by Bleiberg.[15]

Former Brazilian World Cup stars Cafu, Roberto Carlos,Ronaldo and Rivaldo were said to been keen to end their careers with Gold Coast Galaxy. [16]

Gold Coast United's first two signings are ex-Queensland Roar players Scott Higgins and Steve Fitzsimmons.[17]

I think everyone knows all this but there it is in one post.

From the Sydney forums, it seems that GCU is linked with Joel Porter and Kristian Rees. Not good if Joel goes to GCU when we almost got him this season and looked likely to join us next season.

Kristian Rees was a decent player last year and I thought we might sign him on a permanent deal. He was a decent defender and scored a goal. We should try and sign him up.

Plus word on the street in Oz is that Travis Dodd will be signed by a J-League team.

He is contracted for a few more seasons at AU, will be a transfer fee involved.

I thought he was a RB and would be a good signing as Muscat is short-term, Mulligans been awful and doesn't look like improving. Now I see he is a CB and realise he would be a pointless signing with Durante, McKain, Sigmund and Dodd.

Gold Coast United goes glossy

David Lewis

October 1st, 2008

THE most aggressive recruitment campaign ever unleashed by a sporting club begins today with glossy brochures explaining the attractions of Gold Coast United heading the way of the 96 A-League players coming off contract at the end of the season.

The 22-page sales pitch positions United as 'Queensland's Premier Football Club' -- a statement sure to get up the noses of natural rivals the Roar -- and labels the Coast as the nearest thing to nirvana this side of the mortal coil.

It also serenades the club's fixture against Chinese giants Beijing Guoan at the iconic Bird's Nest Olympic stadium next June as the highpoint of a pre-season tour which will also take in Fiji, Papua New Guinea and Hong Kong.

The booklets also trumpet The Strip's culture, entertainment attractions and natural beauties -- wilderness, not women.

It's all part of billionaire boss Clive Palmer's magnificent obsession to turn the Coast into a magnetic field few players will be able to resist.

The iron ore magnate won't rest until he has mined the richest talent seams in Australia and beyond.

Last year's A-League Player of the Year Joel Griffiths (Newcastle Jets), Carlos Hernandez (Melbourne Victory), Cassio (Adelaide United), Sasho Petrovski (Mariners) and Shane Smeltz (Wellington) will all be targeted by the brochure drop.

The rhetoric turned to reality yesterday when Palmer descended in one of his helicopters at Skilled Park alongside his first significant signing -- former Juventus back-up goalkeeper Jess Vanstrattan.

"Why would a player want to play for anybody else in Australia," he chirped.

"We're already Queensland's premier club and we're also going to be the best club in the country. We'll prove it by winning the competition in our first season (2009-2010).

"Players like Jess didn't come here to finish last and I didn't invest in this club to finish last. Winning is what this club will be all about."

Palmer, whose business tentacles probe deep into China, personally brokered the deal with Guoan with the two clubs set to play each other home and away on an annual basis as well as indulging in players exchange, coaching co-operation and joint marketing projects.

Palmer claims Vanstrattan is just the tip of the talent iceberg with other major signings set to be announced as early as next week, with Wellington Phoenix's New Zealand international striker Smeltz almost certain to be one of them. Talks will begin in earnest today, with Smeltz -- a player long admired by head coach Miron Bleiberg -- keen to return to Queensland where he spent two years with the Brisbane Strikers.

Bleiberg, who has received a rich response from players who have been approached overseas, admitted: "We'll be talking but there are other clubs after him too and nothing is finalised yet."

Palmer added: "You'll be surprised at some of the players we're dealing with. Some of them have earned huge sums and while we can't afford that because of the salary cap, the fact is they want to live and play on the Gold Coast."

Bleiberg insisted the club would not be a rest home for fading stars.

"We'll be getting people who still have a lot of football left in them," he said.

Palmer reiterated the club would ferry its players about in one of his three jets, emblazoned with a Gold Coast United crest and complete with a multi-million dollar refit.

Seems like we're pretty much screwed on the Smeltz front. I really can't see Porter coming to us next year either.

Er, let's see how much is talk and bluster.   There are options either way.  As long as we're still talking to all our players, that's the main thing.

Did I read somewhere that they are increasing the import quota to 5 per squad next season.....?

Anyone (HN) shed any light on this...?

Thanks for clarifying Tony P.

Hope you've got the radar locked on some good ones for us for next season then.....and good luck with your efforts in keeping Shane Smeltz at the Nix.

Can you comment any further on Joel Porters situation - is it just a one season extension he signed with Hartlepool and was he keen to re-open talks with the Nix when he does become available....?
