Same said for Warriors. Get your team based around experienced Aussies then get the Kiwis to support. Rocket science? I think not.

So you can only be good if you hold a certain birth certificate? What a load of crap.

I believe the phrase was quality. What positions do you invest in proven performers and tough players?

Possibly too- the style of play needs to be taken into account. So Brown, Moss, Smeltz, Lochead should all be in supporting roles, while Johnson is the key man? We are mixing up different games.

Indeed it was interesting that Lance Hohaia has had difficulty getting on the park, but came up with the goods, but was dropped again for Wade MacKinnon.

Experienced leadership that works with the team is important- wether it is Kevin Campion or Ruben Wiki.

It helps I guess to have proven performers in the league you are playing in, but with the A-league this is not always possible.

Freddie Ljungberg is available on a free, mebbe if everyone buys a Lotto ticket or 2 on the weekend, if someone wins, they can spare a few mil on a good cause.

"I'm playing the best football of my career, and I'm honoured and privileged to have been given the opportunities I have in Wellington," said Smeltz recently. "I love it here. The Phoenix is a great club and Wellington is a great city to live and work in."

The chatter here was Elliot into the midfield probably as a guest a few weeks back, but it has gone deadly silent now. A Elliot- Brown midfield, behind the attack. Surely a good thing and a welcome publicity boost there. Maybe they are waiting until the next home games swing around, or they figure we have the goods, and just giving the current players time to get their combinations gelling.

Elliot>Johnson? and Ferrante? or do we not want to drop a leadership member of a w-d record squad?

anyone heard anything?

Ive got a feeling that unless someone gets injured then there will be no new players coming into the Phoenix. Things have settled down a bit....we are selecting a consistent side and picking up points. So thats it for this year.
Can't wait for the off season so we can start speculating again...its fun. Can I start now? I reckon JoelPorter signed a letter of intent to play for the Phoenix...we will see him at the ROF

A couple of interesting signings for the Gold Coast

From todays Sydney Morning Herald

" Gold Coast, meanwhile, have all but tied up Socceroos star Jason Culina to become their first marquee player, and have also added two other midfielders to the inaugural squad.

Central Coast Mariners workhorse Matthew Osman has signed a two-year deal, while 25-year-old former New Zealand Knights midfielder Zenon Caravella will return to the A-League after 18 months with Dutch lower league side FC Omniworld."

I liked Caravella when he played for the Knights, skillful, good worker and deft touch on the pass

With Culina going there as Marquee, does this strengthen our chances of keeping Shane Smeltz and him becoming our marquee?

If he goes anywhere it'll be Adelaide. Partners make big noises in these decisions. He'll have same problems with imports there as well

The Culina thing really surprises me, I thought he had a lot more to prove in Europe... and he ain't that good.

He's certainly not the sort of 'big name' attacking player that is traditional marquee or even close to the names that have been thrown around by Miron the mouth already.

Liked Caravella, HUGELY lightweight though.

Culina is a great player. He'd be a step above most other players in the A-League imo. He's usually best on park for Aussie.

He wont go to the Gold Coast. He could easily go to a club like Blackburn/mid table EPL.

Talk on FFT that Adam Giffiths has signed as well and Jacob Burns has agreed verbally.

Scary-looking squad they're assembling.

Caravella is awesome and was v.good for the knights. But as HN's already said, he's lightweight, and if someone sticks a tough nut on him you won't hear a murmur from him

Well, yeh you're right. They would have made a good team though.

Wikipedia is half right. Doesn't say anything about captaincy...

They have captain and marquee but I'd trust FFT over wikipedia.

Check it again I removed "captain" shortly after I replied to ya

The colours are also wrong - black and red were the Thunder. NQFC is rumoured to involve green some how - originally green and white, but for SOME REASON their coach didn't like that idea.... Most recently green and blue. We'll learn tommorow.

Doesn't mention captain here either, only that he is currently captain of the Jets. Interesting his comments about leaving, practical and honest. The money talked, he walked, and like Smeltz,he still has a job to do for the rest of the season

Nope... there was an Aus forum rumouring them to NQ last week.

Chance we could have hi-jacked it, or the forum was wrong but I'd suspect North Queensland if it is actually happening (although using an import spot on Brockie AND one on Krishna seems unlikely).

I think loyalgunners comment is referring to the a-league in general, not just these two players - ie the more kiwis in the a-lague the better!!!

Queenslander 3x a year.

Heard a rumour last night that the Nix have secured a couple of players. Very Dodgy sauce, but interesting to notice these 2 names come up just now.

North Queensland announce their name and colours tomorrow, so it wouldnt surprise me if they also throw in a few signings as well. Looks like Middleby will be going there for sure
