How is it good for the continuity of our side to sign a player who is a day by day proposition because of his knees (and the laughing stock of the league) and/or a player who is closer to my age than the rest of our squad (which is already one of the oldest in the league).I want two or three players one or two of whom will be leading our line for the next three years and that allows for one or two not working out. If we sign a player like those two we rely on them not collapsing broken (risky) AND the other recruits all working out otherwise we're right where we are in a fortnight with no forwards and having to use all our resources and dollars to recruit all over again.Do it once, do it now, do it right.
Well Dadi's age is no problem he is one of the best strikers in the league and he scores goals consistently and yet you are worried about how close he is to your age??? Age doesn't matter if you are playing like a 25 year old.Phoenix Transfer - speculation (Part 1)

I don't know why age is such a big factor for you, if they are still quality you sign them. Dadi is in form and Aloisi in form is easily the best striker in the league.
Show me the stats on that!!

Another bit of interesting news coming out of Australia regarding the Smeltz transfer. The Turkish club approached the Phoenix and offered a transfer fee to get Smeltz's services. Would be interested in when all this happened.
That rich t**ser who owns GC has thrown his toys out of the cot.....threatened to sue and is outraged by the Turkish bid. Well welcome to the real world of football. Just coz you have got a fat wallet doesn't mean you can buy everything and anyone.......actually you can
...oops!
But money can't always buy you success on the pitch...just ask Sydney. the trouble with guys like that, who doesn't understand football, is if the GC crap out.....which is quite possible. Then the whole thing turns into a disaster and he starts looking for scapegoats ands heads roll......be warned Mr Smeltz!!!

Strictly speaking I imagine he is contrated until April 1st or so, which means if they wanted him in this January window they could have paid for him.
Suspect they thought it might be a way to sneak around the Gold Coast deal... similar to Jade North dumping out on the Fury and heading for Korea.

Christ, what are we looking at, old men and has beens.
J.C. does the Nix pay a scout? or do we just hang around for everyone elses leftovers?
We should be building a future or
Maybe RH can choose some more try hards who he can't get to try

wouldn't have got one would we? as he is off contract and therefore a free agent.
Thats right...which was why I was wondering when all this happened. The Smeltz shift was news months ago. Makes you wonder what was going on in the back rooms. Jedinak is going to the same club and that was being negotiated ages ago. The Turkish club is obviously well aware of the A-League and have 3 or 4 aussies on their books now. They would have known all about Smeltz. I guess we will never know the full story. There is no way the Phoenix would get a transfer fee unless Smeltz re-signed.
Smeltz says he doesn't want people thinking he is a mercenary...chasing bigger money with the Turks and says he knows bugger all about it. Which is what they always say...still $500,000 per year is not to be discarded lightly.

Torne that is right apparently Ricki said it in a interview before the match.

one or other of the likes of aloisi and dadi mixed with perhaps a late 20s stayer and a couple of early to mid 20s players wirth potential would seem to me to be the way to go...also i think if costa is the new wynton rufer..in my opinion an absolute joke...then he should be thrown to the wolves and given a prolonged run in the starting eleven....
im happy that there is no public grandstanding like last years porter fiasco but i do hope our management is truly on the case in the search for the spark the team obviously needs...
as an aside can someone explain how gold coast can afford to increase smeltzs contract and contract all these high profile players and stay under the salary cap

Mate its not negative, its a positive for the team to say no to that crap.
I'll work on a list of players for you then

One things for sure, after last years drawn out fiasco with Porter there will be no comment from Tony P until he has his man signed and sealed...100%
That sort of "will he won't he" may keep the bloggers happy on the internet and fill news colums in the paper but in reality there is no advantage for a club conducting player recruitment in the public media.
I reckon the first we will hear about anyone for next season is when we get a press statement from the club saying " Wellington Phoenix are pleased to announce the signing of......."

Been wondering about that myself. Anyone know how these big GC deals are being done?
Or have some ideas or theories on how they could be done? (Under-the-table dealings? Stretching the rules? Being dodgy in some other way?)

The way I red it was sweetners... meaning little extras outside his salary. Like Cullina's wife has apparently been found a job at Palmer's mining company: not technically his salary, but a way to get more money into hi family's coffers.

True but I would think that any signing would require the player to re-up. The Turks would pay a fee to the nix with a salary agreed with the player for x amount of years. Thus he signs for say 3 years, making is letter of intent with the Gold Coast nothing more than ink and paper.
Smeltz can say what he bloody well likes about knowing nowt about it but when he goes online to look at his bank statement and finds and extra 0 on the end of the wage, I'm sure he will know exactly why.....

Interesting that Dadi goes straightaway
""The loan arrangement with FC Vaduz starts immediately meaning Dadi will not be available for Perths final two matches of the season against Newcastle and Queensland.""
Makes them weaker for the last 2 games, hopefully helps us retain our spot if they lose both

thank God for Dadi being re-signed!
i'm also happy he's playing for FC Vaduz, albeit for a limited time only! I'm a great fan of Liecthenstein football. I recommend Charlie Connelly's Stomping Grounds, very amusing book on the subject.

That's a salary cap breach under the NRL system ala the Bulldogs of 2002 when they had family staff members et al as enticements. Surely the FFA can't get this wrong and allow that to carry on. That would have to be a financial incentive and thus measurable to the salary cap.
