as much as I love shane smeltz, I would hae to see him play for any other a-league club apart from the phoenix. so seeing him playing in big league in europe would be great for him as far as fitness, gametime, competiton goes.
but ture,.. mrs smeltz wouldnt be happy there and it wouldnt be the best place to bring up a child. unless wife + child stayed in aussie.

Wasn't smeltzy offered $650,000 by GC for 3 years? Can't quite remember the deal. If the Turks are offering 3 times that you are talking serious money for an a-League player. Mre Smeltz won't want to go to Ankara....but that sort of money helps set you up for life!

Yes, because a club at that level are going to take a punt on a player that used to sit on the bench in the conference.
He'd go to Turkey because Turkey have made an offer.

ive got a song that wont take long, Adelaide are rubbish.. the second verse is same as the first.. ADELAIDE ARE RUBBISH

He could set himself up well in England in Championship or even EPL if given the opportunity. I have heard the A-League compared to the Championship in terms of quality in the past, so it's not unreasonable that he be spotted... although in saying that, there's not many that have made a leap the england from the HAL.

If Smeltzy was to go off shore for money, why would he go to Turkey? He could set himself up well in England in Championship or even EPL if given the opportunity. Even the SPL
Yes. Maybe we could recommend him to say..... Hibernian.

How do we know we don't have better options lined up now ?
We don't and there's a reasonable chance there isn't so why not speculate when the player in question is good. And building for the future doesn't mean every single player needs to be under a certain age (see Coveny) so there isn't much problem with one older player on a short contract.
On a slightly different note, I've been away for the last two weeks so are there any credible rumours of players signing on/leaving the Phoenix?

Nothing much yet but we think we might have lost Dodd because there has been no talk about him

He has tried and failed in England. Hence his chance at the phoenix.
Oh Wellington is wonderful. We got the wind, the rain and the phoenix. Oh Wellington is wonderful.

Smeltz is nowhere near good enough for a mid-top championship side or EPL. He doesn't really have any outstanding qualities - he's a good goal poacher. Like, say, Archie Thompson - he's terrific at A-League level but anything more than that is too much.
If I was him i'd take the Turkey deal. After that is over he can come back to Aussie/NZ and probably still be quite effective as he doesn't rely on pace at all.

sorry guys but the A league teams dont compare to top half of the championship teams. I dont think that shane would cut the mustard there...but might still make a lot more cash for one of the other teams

If there is one thing I'd like to see next year from a recruitment/selection perspective it would be the use of younger players. As much as people like to criticise Farina and Kosmina I think it's great that they are prepared to give the under 20s a go for two reasons..
a) the business model of a A League club is not just to make money from ticketing and TV.. they can make some good money through identification of talent and selling them off to Europe. Ideally the Nix want to do what the Kingz did with Vicelich etc. No overseas clus are going to botger in nZ so the Nix have a monopoly there....
b) the Nix IMO should not be considered the ultimate in NZ football but a developing ground for younger players and a paddock for older players to return to who have something to offer the younger guys. I don't want to see the Nix stacked with 25-30 yr old aussies and a few tried and true kiwis year in and year out. By playing the younger guys around a core of experienced players you'd hope that the results would still come and there would be more public interest in the club.
I can understand that Ricki wanted to avoid the wooden spoon this year so therefore his team selections and tactics have been made accordingly and that the Nix don't have a youth team but that's my wish anyway...

I think you are being generous to Kosmina. He's playing the youth because of injuries and because his clubs older signings are generally sh*t.
...as for people saying Dadi and Aloisi, what a great idea, let's sign two players who will last one or two more seasons in the league (if they are lucky) so every year we have to try something new. Top idea.

Thanks for the positive reinforcement!

Cynicism personified.
Does every player in your ideal team have to be young and able to play the next 5 years? Some (if not most) certainly do, but you need older players as well and Dadi looks like he has another season in him and Aloisi is more than capable (although I'd prefer only one out of the two personally).

Tablemanners, the flaw in your argument is that there have only been four or five players at the most who have attracted a transfer fee. The clubs are set up to win football games, not develop players. To those putting up the money this is a big investment, they aren't doing it out of the goodness of their hearts, they are out there to win. And thats the only attitude that's going to win trophies which surely is the point of the club.

I prefer to think of it as reality based.
Dadi will be 36 next season and Aloisi's knees are shot.
I don't want young, but not-crippled and not requiring another twelve months of angst about where a replacement comes from the moment a player signs would be nice.

How is it good for the continuity of our side to sign a player who is a day by day proposition because of his knees (and the laughing stock of the league) and/or a player who is closer to my age than the rest of our squad (which is already one of the oldest in the league).
I want two or three players one or two of whom will be leading our line for the next three years and that allows for one or two not working out. If we sign a player like those two we rely on them not collapsing broken (risky) AND the other recruits all working out otherwise we're right where we are in a fortnight with no forwards and having to use all our resources and dollars to recruit all over again.
Do it once, do it now, do it right.
