Scribbler, unless you have the inside word that's just pure speculation.  And there's already enough of that going on around here...

Read the title of the thread....Transfers Speculation

Thanks, nigtz.  Whaddya reckon? Quick whip round for a new pair of reading glasses for james dean? Or stronger lights in the back room. Must get real murky out there sometimes!

EDIT : Fixed tags due to Scribbler and Nightz general N00bness.

JD, something wrong with the layout of the two previous posts (mine and nightz). Had it looking okay in preview after a bit of a fiddle with pagination, but then it posted out of whack as you can see. Time for a gun backroom boy to swing into action?  lol scribbler2008-06-12 15:00:36

Your inability master the basics of the quote tags is hardly our fault...

Fixed it for you.

That didn't come across right, I don't have the inside word but my point is that you really seem to be taking some liberties with what may or may not have happened.  To speculate that its Porter's fault because he didn't know his own transfer status?  I think that's just a bit silly, as you rightly point out there are agents involved on both sides and clearly no-one was sure which way the club was going to go on taking the option on the last year of his contract.

And fair point on the speculation, I just would prefer to have things slightly grounded in reality before we start the inevitable Porter hate campaign!  He could well be here next year.

Who and when was our last signing?  It's been too f**king long.  I need something to make me jump on the bandwagon again.  I'm bored.

3 spots still to fill, 9 weeks left until the first game - chuck us a bone will you Tony, or better still let's have a signing.
He dribbles a lot and the opposition dont like it - you can see it all over their faces. (Ron Atkinson)

JD, I speculated [Dictionary: Speculate - to talk over conjecturally, or review in an idle or casual way and with an element of doubt or without sufficient reason to reach a conclusion] on some of the mistakes that might have been made along the way re Porter's non arrival.

This followed HN's comment that no one was to blame. (btw, cheers, HN, for fixing my earlier post)

Someone, maybe more than one person, obviously got it wrong or he'd be playing for us this season.

Hopefully, everyone will be wiser after this event and we won't get caught out like this again.

I feel genuinely sorry for the  bloke and his family, house on the market and preparing to move downunder only for things to turn to custard for him at the last minute.

Trust me, my comments were not intended as a 'bash Porter' post.

I'll happily lead the cheering when Porter does take the pitch in Nix colours. Hopefully next season. I think he'll be a great addition to the club.

Truce?

You will have a signing soon just be patient. Negotations are going well but do take time.

In regards to Joel Porter he did not let us down and was always honest with us.  He has given great service to Hartlepool but felt that they would reward him by allowing to play in the A League. This wasn't the case so no blame should be directed to Joel or WPX. It is just part of life and we all move on.

Fantastic !!!

We know you will deliver.

It's impatience arising from passion for the Nix - wanting the best possible team taking the field at the RoF.

Haha, we'd have names if Tony wasn't 'secret squirrell.' I'm pretty happy after Tony's last posts.

"You will have a signing soon" such sweet words coming from him.

Hell no... did nothing for Adelaide and apart from early promise nothing at Ipswich.  Even at Celtic he was a star for the first part and then dropped off horrendously.

I just wanna say one thing regarding taking "A-League rejects".  While I don't think we should take just anyone who has been released by an A-League squad, just becasue another team decides a player doesn't fit them it doesn't mean they couldn't do a job for another club.

Again, I am not warranting the signing of Kwasnik or anyone else speculated on here, just that to say outright "don't take ANY 'A-League rejects'" is both foolish and ill informed.  If you believe the player wouldn't fit in with our style then fine, but say that rather than "not good enough for them, not good enough for us".

I'm sure, if I could be bothered, I could find plenty of players who have been passed over by a club only to be amazing for someone else.  OOO actually, Cristiano Ronaldo anyone?  Passed over by Liverpool and now look at the man!

For what it's worth, I think we'll be fine, especially if we play a 4-3-3.  That's not to say another striker wouldn't go down a treat but we would base our attack around our strengths and with some great wingers and attacking midfielders, Smeltz's role may change but I can still see us scoring plenty of goals.
Set pieces could become a strong point also which are a resonable method of scoring goals.

Oh and why is it so f**ken hard to find a right back.  Or for someone to play there.  It's hardly a difficult position, have a bit of speed, defend as usual and help out on attack.  It's ridiculous the problems that seem to occur there.

because there arnt that many SPECIALIST right backs on the market, the ones that are specifically right backs are alreayd at a club, its a common a league problem, and everyone gets pissy about converted ones, even tho i dont think lia will be that bad.. we shall see, o and tony is the man. that is all

has Mulligan found a new club yet?

maybe the chance of playing rb for the nix is becoming more agreeable to him the longer he goes without a pay check. (i believe $ is mooted as to why he wouldn't sign)

It's a common problem. Even the Australian national team don't really have a true right back.

emerton and neil both play right back in the premiership?

Permalink Permalink
almost 18 years ago · edited about 5 years ago · History
Neil is a centre back and Emerton isn't a great right back. He's a wide midfielder turned right back. He played as a midfielder v Qatar yesterday. Wilkshire played at right back - he's usually a central midfielder but can play anywhere really.

Neil made his name playing at right back for Blackburn and is a right back by trade ( plays centre back for australia, where does he play for west ham?

Id say australia have two pretty good options for right back out of those two - obvioulsy they have been shifted to fill other gaps in the australian team

intersting though cant think of alot of outstanding right backs throughout the world let alone the a-league;

Jose Bosingwa? Dani Alves? Cafu in his prime...aren't many superstar right backs in the same way as you have quite a few famous left backs..

On form and fit Gary Neville is an exceptional player - can tackle, has pace, great passer of the ball and reader of the game. Come on do you really think that United would have the 2nd worst footballer ever on their books? No I don't think so either. The press may love to hate and so do opposition fans but until this season gone he's been the best right back in britain for at least 7 years
