By the way Whoooooo, did you watch New Zealand play at the 2009 Confederations Cup? If so, you've obviously forgotten who our best player was, Simon Elliott seemed to be the only All White on the park with composure, vision and the ability to pass to a team mate's feet. Oska2010-04-02 00:18:41

Exactly, one thing I want the Nix to do the most is work really on on bringing back all these Kiwis with floundering careers, even if just for a trial. For the life of me I cannot see why bringing James, J Smith, Bright etc over for a trial would do any harm, even Old could be worth a check-up.

this. what harm is a trial, u never know how certain players< ="Content-" content="text/; charset=utf-8">< name="ProgId" content="Word.">< name="Generator" content="Microsoft Word 12">< name="Originator" content="Microsoft Word 12"><> might play in different environments such as the nix

Okay Whoooooooooooooooo,

Since you're claiming that Elliot and James are sh*t, can you produce some stats to claim they are worse than say, Tim Brown or vince Lia?

At least when WPF wanked on about Paston via Moss he tried to back it up.

O god no,lets not do that again. He backed it up with pointless stats, and compared stats that are uncompareable. Id rather he didnt try do that to be honest.

i still think certain people have an over inflated sense of how good the A - League actually is - most of the players in these squads are League 2 level at best so James at Barnet should be interesting, that said pace aside I think Elliott could do a very good job in the league his vision, passing and set pieces could be a real asset - could be our equivelent as Kevin Muscat but not as dirty or cheaty.

This may have been said already - apologies if it has.

I wouldn't sign any more NZers until the terms and conditions of our license extension are confirmed. If, in the future, NZers will count as imports (i.e. the same rules that apply to all the other A-League teams apply to the Nix) then we need to use our 5 import spots very very thoughtfully.

That means we should do all we can now to support and develop NZ talent to make it in the professional game.

We should sign more to make use of the opportunity while we have it.

How's my driving? - Whine here

Agree with news here. We should be signing up any kiwis we can, who are obviously good enough of course.

James, Bright etc are atleast worth a trial. I think it would be quite easy to get some of these youngens back here. Even a loan could work?

I doubt Si Elliot will move back to NZ in a hurry.  I think he has a missus who is locked in to her job in LA.  Marius will know the details.

We may have only one more season of NZers not counting as imports.

Let's wait and see what the rules are before we sign any non Aussies - at least for longer than next season anyway.

They wouldnt just impose it instantly. There would clearly be a grace period. Otherwise the PFA would have something to say im sure as well.

You would like to think so but we are talking about Bin Hammam - the pronouncement a couple of months ago from the AFC made no allowance for a grace period.

To me there is little or no down side to waiting for certainty about the rules past next season but huge risk if we don't and then find we have used up our available import spots for "development players".

I know a gay guy..that could come in handy :D

Seriously though, I reckon I'd personally like to see Elliot play for the Nix, though I am a bit worried that he might be past his prime.
But to me he was one of the better players at the Confed Cup. Which means that if he plays well at WC he'll likely pick up a contract somewhere else.

At least hes broadening his football horizons and moving away from the phoenix. Somehow still manages to be much more informed than us somehow, therefore he is right and we are wrong. His argument is just too powerful, its not even worth talking about. Just give up now LG

elliots rubbish. he will not flourish in the a-league. players far better than him have come to the a-league and not shined so how will a 36 year old midfielder who can't run faster than my grandma expect to do any good. not worth wasting our time chasing to be honest.

Guys, Elliot is no Scholes but he is the only NZer (other than Nelsen or maybe Vicelich) who has the vision and composure (key emphasis on that) to play the def MF role - this was made very clear in SA last year at Confeds. Brown is too scared to touch the ball at All White level yet at A -League level the commentators talk about him as if he is a goal scoring mid filelder of Gerrard's quality (even though they are all from 6 yards out from his head and he missed everything from 10 yards out from his feet). Point is - there is a massive gap between the A League and international levels.

On the All Whites (sorry wrong thread) Ricki cannot play Brown and Elliot. It has to be Mac and one of them. Brown simply cannot play def mid at All White level as his vision, touch, passing and composure are not up to it. I admire the guy's stickability and guts but I think he is just not up to that level. When he plays you need a Lia and Muscat with pace to tidy up behind him, Eliiot doesn't have that pace so gets exposed.

For the Nix Elliot would be more than fine. For the AWs you cannot play them together..

actually, maybe you can't read.

i said he's old, slow and passing is under par (always backwards or sideways) too afraid to shoot, and if he does it's a mile off target. He doesn't cut it.

don't know why you can't see that when he does not play (vs Bahrain we won like i said we would, Mexico - subbed - we scored tho disallowed) we perform better, maybe confed. cup not included.

Look, I'm not denying the fact that he has in the past been a good player and yeah sure his vision is great and he's not a bad DMF. But think about the style of the midfielders in the A-League at the moment, most are box to box, fast skillful players, players who would counter his style of play and TBH I think run circles around him.

I'm trying to say here, that I just simply think that we would be wasting resources and time chasing him to come to the Nix, we should be putting more effort into finding younger more exuberant players who could potentially develop into long term prospects for the Nix. We don't want to be chasing someone who is going to come on a one year contract, get kicked in the third game in and be out for the next five games.

But don't worry, ignore everything I've said. Apparently you are not allowed an opinion on public forums anymore. Jeez, who would of thought a thread titled "Transfer Speculation" would bring out personal opinions on players.

Pretty good analysis, Browny's nowhere near good enough at international level. The problem is you can't play McG and Elliott in the middle together as Elliott's legs are a bit too old now, so he needs someone closer to him to help out defensively. Pretty much the only reason why Brown's in the starting XI imo.

No, i find it LOLTASTIC that you think Elliot is sh*t because he passes the ball backwards/sideways..

Have you ever heard of playing the easy ball/playing the way you're facing?
I think its more the fact that it comes across as a statement of fact. Things like "Elliott's Rubbish" is going to get people defensive right from the start. When it comes across as opinion such as containing the words "in my opinion..." or "I think.." and don't completely trash (how punny) a player, then it will be better recieved. For example earlier I got away with the following
Not keen myself. Then again I'm one of those few who think that he shouldn't be in the starting 11 for the AW's. If Ricky IS keen for him to start for the AW's however I would not be upset if he decided that Elliot was good enough for the Nix. In Ricki we trust.

without too much bagging. It is clear that i am stating my opinion, I guess people respect that.
